Grading Scale
Policies and Procedures
Attendance: To be eligible for a letter grade of A or B, a student may have
no more than 3 unexcused absences from lecture, and no more
than 3 unexcused absences from workshop. Each late counts
as 1/2 an absence. All absences must be excused AHEAD
OF TIME. The only exceptions to the attendance rule are
for emergencies or scheduled participation in intercollegiate
activities. Students are responsible for any missed notes or
assignments.Your attendance will be regularly recorded in
mycourses.
Technology
No calculators, phones, tablets, Google Glass, etc. will be
allowed on in class. If I see anything that may be a disruption
to your learning out, I will remove it for the duration of
class. If a cell phone rings, I reserve the right to take action.
This is extremely disruptive to the class. Calculators are not
permitted on exams or quizzes, so I encourage all to try to
accomplish as many assignments without their calculators as
it will help prepare them better for exams!
Workshops:
Every lecture will be followed by a 10-15 minute workshop
where students will gather in groups of 4 or 5 to work through
activies related to the class. The LA’s will be in the room to
assist. Workshops will be graded on the following scale:
0 - Student is not present for workshop
1 - Student is present but not actively participating
2 - Student is present and actively participating
If you know you will be missing class, you must let me know
ahead of time in order to receive the workshop to complete
on your own time for credit.
Homework:
There are 12 homework assignments throughout the
semester. Homework will be worth 20 points each. Two
homework assignment grades will be dropped at the end of
the semester. Assignments will NOT be accepted late and
should be turned in before lecture begins on their due date.
If you know you will be absent on the class day that a homework is due, you may hand in the assignment at an agreed
upon time, provided that I have already excused you from
class.
Exams:
There will be four (one hour) in class examinations. There
will be no make up exams given, unless you have been excused
previously. I will allow no more than one make up exam per
quarter. This is of course unless the circumstances are serious
enough to allow for it. The final exam is mandatory in this
course!
Academic
Honesty:
Honesty is extremely important, so cheating will not be tolerated. For the first offense, the student will receive a zero
without any chances of retaking. The second offense will
result in failure of the course.
Other Helpful Information
Recitations:
The Learning Assistants for the course will each lead two,
one hour recitations each week. That means there are four
opportunities for you to get extra help with the material
and attempt some more difficult problems. These are not
mandatory, however, I will be asking for sign in sheets to
get a feel for who is attending. The days and times of these
meetings will be determined by the end of the first week.
Review Sessions:
I will be holding biweekly review sessions for students in all
sections of 211 to come and receive help on anything they
might be struggling with. Again, these are not mandatory,
but extremely beneficial. I am offering you my free time to
help you succeed in this course so please take advantage!
The days and times of these meetings will be determined
by the end of the first week.
Academic
Accommodations:
There are several resources available to students to help
them succeed in the classroom. If you are a student in
need of extended test time, you should make your professors aware of this with the appropriate documentation from
the Academic Accommodations Office. It is your responsibility to deliver all testing envelopes to the professor well
in advance of any upcoming exams.
Academic
Support
Center:
Any student who feels they are falling behind in the course
can take advantage of our Support Center and private
mathematics tutoring. This is a free service and is located
in the SAU Second Floor (above the coffee shop). See me
for more information if you would like to take advantage of
this opportunity.
Bates Study
Center:
Located on the first floor of Gosnell, the Bates Center is
a place where students can get tutoring from the Teaching
Assistants, Graduate Students and sometimes professors in
their Math courses. The tutors hours are posted outside the
doors of the center. The Bates Study Center is now where
students can also find tutors from the Academic Support
Center during the hours of 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Website and
Mycourses:
The website is where you will find all course content such
as solutions to homework and exams and a copy of the
syllabus. Mycourses is used to track grades and attendance
only.
