Public Forum Camp Directory
Summer 2014
WEST
Stanford National Forensics Institute, SNFI
"PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The SNFI treats Public Forum as the distinct event it is,
and the program has its own dedicated instructional staff as well as a specific division
director and unique curriculum developed for Public Forum. The program is divided into
three one-week sessions that are organized progressively."
Dates: Begins July 13th and ends August 9th; different programs during this range
Deadline to Apply: "The date for preferential enrollment is May 25th, which does not
guarantee a spot, but we will make our best efforts to accommodate students who apply
by this date. All applicants will be admitted as space permits, even applications
submitted after May 25th and into June or later. Applications received after June 10
may incur a late fee of $50 per week of camp."
Price: range from $1,150-$3,995 depending on program length; commuters have reduced
price; resident price includes room and board; all prices include meals
Practice Rounds: Each week there is an in-camp tournament that will include multiple
practice rounds. Practice rounds are also held during lab time that are full rounds and
stop/start rounds. The Intensive Practice Round session centers on hosting practice
rounds each day of the program. That specific week offers many practice rounds with a
variety of judges.
Topics Covered: SNFI is organized by skill level; you should be honest about how much
experience you have when choosing a program. The Beginner Week covers all the basics
of PF: speeches, argumentation, and delivery. The 2 and 3 week programs will cover
these topics but also more advanced topics such as Impact Calculus and Judge
Adaptation. SNFI PF also features electives that cover topic specific analysis, philosophy,
Policy in PF practices, among other offerings. Each week features a new resolution that
will be researched and debated during the camp.
Thoughts: Having worked at SNFI for four years, I find that the program is
comprehensive and inclusive. Stanford is a gorgeous place to spend a week or two of
your life, but this camp isn't just about being at Stanford. The teaching staff take it
seriously that you improve your skills and make themselves accessible to helping you
maximize your experience. I highly recommend SNFI if you are able to afford the camp.
Blame Stanford Housing for the pricey accommodations.

Lunch on Sundays and there are several “fun” days scattered throughout. At the bottom
of this page you will find last year’s schedules for Public Forum and Policy Debate.
There will be small changes this year, but it will give you a general idea of what the
average day looks like."
Thoughts: The camp is comprehensive in its topics and in practice rounds. A great Bay
Area camp.

leave our academic camp with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to
succeed in debate."

Deadline to Apply:Prices increased after March 31, but I could not find a deadline to
apply.
Price: Overnight Camp (2 Weeks for $2995/ 1 Week for $1695)
Commuter Camp (2 Weeks for $2295/ 1 Week for $1595)
Practice Rounds: Practice rounds with extensive feedback are mentioned in the
marketing. I cannot speak to the exact number of rounds included in the program.
Topics Covered: "Critical to success in public forum debate is the ability to effectively
argue a wide range of topics. Our highly experienced debate camp faculty will teach
campers advanced argumentation skills in the following areas: Case Criteria
Development, Delivery, Issue Selection, Summary and Final Focus
Writing, Refutation, Case Construction, Brief Writing, Evidence Analysis, Research."
Thoughts: Capitol boasts many successful debaters that have moved through their
camps in the past, and this camp combines debate with fun activities in the area. The
curriculum looks comprehensive and a great addition to Southern California's summer
camps.

students throughout the country. We offer one and two week sessions for Crossexamination/Policy debate and two week sessions for Lincoln-Douglas/Value and one

session for debate novices. This is the institute's 13th year of offering affordable debate
education to students from the Rocky Mountain region. Our mission is to provide
exceptional, national-caliber instruction to students at the cheapest possible price."
Dates: July 14-20, 1 week session
Deadline to Apply: n/a
Price: Full Tuition: $475/ Commuter: $250
Discounts offered:

of the total cost to incentivize debate-learning in the state of Wyoming.
Early-bird discount: Successful registration by April 15, 2013 qualifies for a $25 discount
off total cost.
Referral discount: For every confirmed referral by another registrant, you qualify for a
$25 discount off the total cost. That means you can save $25 for every friend or
teammate you can recruit to attend the camp.
Practice Rounds: unknown
Topics Covered: "This 1 week session will focus on debate fundamentals such as
flowing and speaking as well as skills particular to the PF format, such as case
construction, research skills for a one-month topic rotation, and debate strategy. This
session is designed for students with at least one year of debate experience."
Thoughts: This camp would be great for residents of Wyoming or the Rocky Mountain
region. A relatively new PF camp, I have not heard much about it's reputation or
offerings. The staff looks like it has a very successful Policy debate background; it may
not be as versed in PF as other more established camps. Nonetheless, a cheap and good
offering in the region.

Practice Rounds: "BFI’s camp design emphasizes student-engaged learning by relying
on numerous drills, active learning modules, and practice rounds that help students
transfer theoretical knowledge into applied practice."
Topics Covered: A great overview provided here. "Students who participate in the oneweek session will focus primarily on fundamentals of forensics and basics in their event.
In the second week, students will receive advanced training and additional practice
rounds in their event." BFI Features a Novice and Varsity track, focuses on skills
building, specifically research skills and topic knowledge. "Students will be able to take
guided research courses courses in politics, public policy, economics, the courts, global
issues, as well as focused courses on different regions and nations." Core Courses
include: Elements of Effective Research, Fundamentals of Argument, and Public Forum
Lab, as well as electives that include Performance Workshop, Critical
Philosophy, Modern & Contemporary Philosophy, Political Science, Special Topics,
and Performance in Debate.
Thoughts: This camp seems to have great topics, structure, and teaching philosophy.
There is also a bonus offering of College Credit at the University of Utah for attendees.
This looks like a great option for the southwest.

Bay Area Young Genius
"The Summer Session Debate Camps at our Saratoga Office are for students to explore
advanced argumentation and advocacy by examining the styles of debate middle schools
and high schools in the bay area participate in: Lincoln Douglas, Congress, Public Forum,
and Spontaneous Speech Events."
Dates/Price: see website
Deadline to Apply: n/a
Practice Rounds: "The class will culminate with a mini-debate and speech in-class
tournament."
Topics Covered: "Students will learn how to structure and argue different cases as well
as learn how to research evidence to support those cases. They will do more exploration
of current events as well as framing arguments in a policymaker context... This class
allows students to try out different performance opportunities that many middle school
and high school speech and debate programs offer."
Thoughts: This camp is relatively new and the half day format means it will not be as
intensive as other Bay Area camps. The Middle School focus, as well as the format that
provides an overview of various events, means this camp would be best suited for new
debaters, especially those in Middle school. I would say this camp is great for Bay Area
locals, but if you are willing to travel look at SNFI and CNDI.

Whitman
"Our pedagogy is student-centered and privileges active learning through experience. It is
not our goal to deposit mountains of information in students' minds, but rather to
familiarize students with the process of critical thinking, researching, and developing
complete, compelling arguments on each new topic. In other words, we want students to
leave the camp feeling confident in their ability to research any topic and craft high
quality arguments on their own. We also strive to improve the speaking skills and ability
to advocate a position of each and every student, regardless of experience level. This
means that we seek to build foundational skills in creative and critical thinking, academic
research, and argument construction more than we wish to teach how to argue about any
single issue or philosopher. We believe that research, speaking, advocacy, and passion
for debate are an important balance that emerge through a combination of careful reading
and summarizing, crafting of arguments, presentation and delivery of an overall position,
refutation, and rhetorical packaging. We use this philosophy to guide our institute and
instruction modules."
Dates/Price:

Sunday, July 6th, 2014 – Saturday, July 12th
(Tuition Cost: $800)
One week session (B)—Public Forum, All experience levels welcome
Deadline to Apply: n/a
Practice Rounds: "Within the first week, everyone will debate at least twice, once on the
affirmative and once on the negative."
Topics Covered: "Our curriculum unfolds in three stages. First, students will plunge into
speaking/debating. Second, students will generate their own arguments and positions.
Third, debaters will cultivate a sense of clash that allows improvements to take place
throughout the season. Before students even arrive at camp they will receive a packet of
quality evidence on one of the topics they may encounter next season. In LD and PF,
students will spend the first two days constructing affirmative and negative cases in
hands-on workshops with our faculty... Philosophy seminars and debate skills sessions
will supplement the practice debates and guided research."
Thoughts: I like the pedagogy presented as well as the camp's "three stage" structure. It
is unclear what advanced topics are covered, but there is a great foundation being built in
the curriculum. Very affordable, I think Whitman is a great option in the Northwest for
debaters.

Southwest Speech and Debate Institute at Arizona State University,
SWSDI
"The Southwest Speech and Debate Institute is held on the campus of Barrett, the Honors
College at Arizona State University. This state-of-the-art facility brings together some of
the best coaches and former competitors in the state of Arizona and students from around
the country for a couple of weeks of awesome instruction, high-energy debate, and
quality preparation for the upcoming season.
The thing that sets SWSDI apart is that we’re not-for-profit. We do this because we love
teaching, and we love forensics. The camp staff is a collection of dedicated and
committed coaches with a broad range of skills and experience. Our small size means that
we’re able to hire only top-notch instructors with both proven competitive success and
strong teaching ability."
Dates: July 5 to July 12, one week session
Deadline to Apply: n/a
Price: Public Forum Debate: $770 residential, $660 commuter, with possible scholarship
or financial assistance (contact camp)
Practice Rounds: Fully-critiqued practice rounds, Practice tournament at the end of
camp
Topics Covered: "Curriculum at SWSDI will feature:
•
Time for research and writing cases and blocks, with plenty of individual attention
from coaches
• Lectures about specific skills and areas of your event, followed up with lab
sessions to put those concepts into practice
• Lab groups – working on skills and doing drills
• Watching and analyzing demonstration debates
• Lectures and drills tailored to students particular skill levels
Public Forum Debate: Argumentation theory, Flowing, Research, including “Google
Fu”, Crossfire, Speaking skills, Each of the speeches: Rebuttals, Summary,
etc., Appealing to the judge, In-round strategy"
Thoughts: This camp is both inexpensive and presents good coverage of topics,
especially for the newer debater. It sounds like a more experienced debater looking for
improvement may want to attend a camp with more advanced topics.

include vocal warm-ups, skills workshops, individual coaching sessions, and Gustavus
value sessions. High school coaches from around the Midwest with extensive knowledge
in Public Forum debate will critique participants and lead lecture sessions."

Thoughts: This camp is a steal price wise, a great opportunity for those in the region, and
staffed by two excellent educators. I don't know much about the curriculum given the
online materials, but if you live in the area of Gustavus I would look into this
program. Check in with the camp for details on the PF program's offering and skill levels
targeted.

Mean Green Workshops, UNT (University of North Texas)
" Our workshop will help you improve their researching and case creation skills to start
your rounds off right. We will also develop your crossfire and refutation skills. Our
comprehensive approach to debate process and argument construction will enable you to
advance round-winning arguments to a broad spectrum of critics. You will also work
daily on delivery exercises to improve your public speaking skills in rounds, and which
will enhance your overall effectiveness as a communicator.
The MGW senior staff are lifelong high school teachers as well as coaches. They have
been honored with awards for teaching excellence. They know the importance of a welldesigned program and of carefully-crafted lessons that stress active learning and mastery
of skills and concepts. Their distinguished practice as teachers ensures that MGW's
Public Forum Workshop is powerfully effective and engaging for students. "
Dates: 2 Weeks: July 6 - July 19, 2014, 1 Week: July 6 - July 12, 2014
Deadline to Apply: final payments due June 1, so I would guess at least 2-3 weeks prior
Price: 2 weeks: $1750, 1 Week: $950, High School commuters have a discount of $100
per week
Practice Rounds: n/a
Topics Covered: n/a
Thoughts: I like the "daily delivery" practice noted in the description - it's always great
to be speaking each day. Given the lack of schedule/overall curriculum it's hard to say
what the program offers comparative to others in the region. I would contact the
Workshop and ask questions about the skills and topics covered. The Workshop boasts
success in Policy and LD - ask about their PF record. As the fourth year in the PF
program this should be up and running smoothly.

Comet Debate Institute, UT Dallas

public speaking and advocacy skills while learning the basic form of PF style
argumentation."
Dates: One-Week Session July 13-19, Two-Week Session July 13-26
Deadline to Apply: July 5, 2014
Price:
Flexible Pricing Options - All sessions include all evidence and CDI T-shirt and meal

• One-week commuter session: $500
• One-week overnight residential session: $700
• Two-week commuter session: $1,000

Practice Rounds/Topics Covered: The information provided online sounds like the
Policy program's offerings. Given this structure, you're guaranteed a lot of practice
rounds, an in camp tournament, and topic based lectures.
Thoughts: PF is a new offering this year at Comet, and it usually takes some time to
build a summer program. Keep you eyes out for the PF faculty and if they have taught at
other camps. Ask some PF specific questions of the camp before committing. Check in
with the camp for details on the PF program's offering and skill levels targeted. Again, a
good option for the region and a competitor with the Mean Green Workshops.

UTNIF, University of Texas at Austin
"We are very happy to offer an outstanding program for debaters in Public Forum in
2014.
The first session (June 26-July 3), designed for students at the Novice to Intermediate
level will introduce students to the foundations of argument construction, presentation
and speaking, tournament preparation, and in round strategy.
The second session (July 5-July 12), designed for students experienced in PF
competition and ready to advance to the next level, will finely hone debating skills and
work with the unique structure of the PF activity to develop strategic approaches to
contest round victory. Students looking for a more rigorous experience are welcome to
attend both workshops."
Dates: Public Forum Novice Session June 26 – July 3, Public Forum Experienced
Session July 5 – July 12
Deadline to Apply: Price increase after May 1, 2014
Price: Public Forum Novice Session $1050, Public Forum Experienced Session
$1050, *FOR APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED AFTER MAY 1, THE PRICE WILL
INCREASE DUE TO A $100 'LATE APPLICATION' FEE.
Practice Rounds: Yes, not quantified on website
Topics Covered: "All students will participate in experience appropriate discussions and
background seminars on rotating PF topics. Students will engage in skills development
through practice debates, re-do speeches, and stop/start instruction. The goal is to train
students to seamlessly incorporate sound argument and persuasion skills into contest
round performance. Students will learn to how to incorporate evidence into their speeches
without becoming dependent upon it. All students will receive the individualized
criticism, encouragement and instruction they need to come away from the workshop
much improved. Participants in UTNIF PF will have the chance to be heard and critiqued
by judges and coaches from within the PF field as well as across the forensics spectrum.
Students looking for a more challenging experience are welcome to attend both sessions
of instruction.
The UTNIF PF faculty and staff are dedicated to making you a better debater. We offer a
rigorous and engaging curriculum designed to build and enhance your debating skills.
The Public Forum curriculum will focus on five key areas:
1 – Core Expertise: Research, Flowing, and Speaking
2 – Argument Development: Elements to Advanced Techniques
3 – Case Construction: A Thematic Approach
4 – Speech-Specific Best Practices: A Formula for Success
5 –Argument Integration: Using and Refuting Policy and Lincoln-Douglas Debate in
Public Forum"
Thoughts: This is the fourth year of the UTNIF camp and their structure covers all of the
core elements of Public Forum. Splitting up Novice (Beginner) and Advanced is a great
move in my opinion, which will help tailor the experience to what you need. Structure
and staff look good - I would look into special topics like Framework and Impact
Calculus to see if they are covered. A competitor with Mean Green for Texas and the
surrounding area.

The camp will include five days of direct instruction, practice rounds and a camp
tournament. Students and coaches will be taught by some of the top debate instructors in
the country. Small lab groups will be capped at eight students per instructor, assuring that
each student receives plenty of one-on-one help."

Deadline to Apply: June 1, 2014
Price: Commuters $395, Residing on campus $495
Practice Rounds/Topics Covered: not described
Thoughts: Appears to be a relatively new debate camp. A great price and connected with
a college debate team, which promises good teaching and coaching. Get more details
about the camp's content from Simpson - perhaps they have yet to post the details. Check
in with the camp for details on the PF program's offering and skill levels targeted. Seems
like a good option for those in the Iowa area in proximity and price.

Missouri State Debate Institute
Some of our camps are designed with a basic session, followed by an advanced session
(called a "sprint," with more competition debates). Students can select the one
appropriate to their experience level, or enroll in both for a progression through the week.
This unique structure keeps the camp affordable while also providing the chance for a
comprehensive experience.
Each of the mini-camps has a very low number to make, and you can select whichever
camps fit your schedule. There were LOTS of students in most of the minicamps last
summer, and we anticipate more students in the coming summer. Registration deposit is
$100, which covers any number of event camps that you sign up for. Students who sign
up for the first 2 week session (or 3 weeks) can add event camps without paying a 2nd
registration fee. The registration fee is NOT in addition to camp fees - it is just a partial
pre-payment of the fee. Remaining camp fees, if any, are collected at the beginning of
each camp. In the event that any individual camp does not "make," the registration fee
will either be applied to other camps you select or will be refunded.
Each event camp runs 9am-5pm, with a lunch break. Lunch isn't included in the price, but
students have many on-campus options in the Student Union or dorm cafeteria.
Dates: July 14-16 (Basic), July 17-19 (Sprint)
Deadline to Apply: June 6, 2014
Price: $150 for each session, $300 for both Basic and Sprint; Event camp fees are
tuition-only. Students can make dorm arrangements at $30/night and eat in the cafeteria
or student union on a pay-per-meal basis. Event camps subject to cancellation or
consolidated if enrollment is low.
Practice Rounds: No specific information is listed for the Public Forum program, but the
emphasis on practice rounds in the established Policy program bodes well for PF.
Topics Covered: No details available for PF
Thoughts: There is an established Policy program, but it is hard to gauge what the PF
program will offer. I'd keep an eye out for updates or ask the Director. As of now, this
looks like a good introductory program for first year or novice level debaters. Those
looking for a more challenging, advanced debater experience may want to consider other
camps in the region. Missouri is definitely one of the most affordable debating camps out
there for PF in the Midwest.

NDI."

housed by us are housed by parents of Omaha debaters attending the camp - more info on

Practice Rounds: A camp tournament is listed on the schedule; unclear what additional
rounds would be offered.
Topics Covered: n/a
Thoughts: This camp is has a bit more experience under its belt compared to other new

very appealing option for Nebraska and the surrounding area. Check in with the camp for

Hoosier Debate Camp, Indiana University Bloomington, IU
"A Winning Curriculum: Learn the Fundamentals
The Hoosier Debate Camp is dedicated to building a curriculum that teaches
debaters to become self-sufficient. We will make sure that each graduate of our
program is well prepared to tackle all future competitive debate obstacles. After
attending the Hoosier Debate Camp, students will show an advancement in their
understanding of argumentation and debate theory, research methods, and
audience analysis and adaption. Students should be able to walk into the 20142015 season with confidence in their speaking abilities to perform well against
any form of competition. After spending one- or two-weeks with us, the student
will be provided with a road map of success for the rest of the summer through
the start of the season and beyond. Attending debate camp is one of the most
important decisions to make if your goals include preparing for success at your
state, national qualification, and national championship tournaments. It is never
too early to prepare for success!"
Dates:
2 Week Option: June 28 - July 12th
1 Week Option A: June 28 - July 5th
1 Week Option B: July 5th- July 12th
Deadline to Apply: June 15, 2014
Price: 1 Week $600, 2 Week $1075
Practice Rounds: Two-day in camp tournament plus practice rounds in lab
time
Topics Covered:
• "Argumentation and Debate Theory: How do the best debaters seem to
have an uncanny ability to take apart even the strongest arguments? If you
know the basics of how arguments are produced and defended, you can
reveal and challenge the weaknesses of any of your opponent’s arguments.
Furthermore, learning the language and culture of debate and its
theoretical background will provide students with the tools to make debate
into what they want it to become. Students should walk away with a
substantial increase in their knowledge of the language of debate.
• Research Methods: In a world where nearly everyone has the ability to
produce written text, we are at risk of “overload” of information on any
topic of discussion. The ability to efficiently locate as well as process
qualified evidence is the essence of being a good debater. Students will
learn how to rapidly navigate quality online resources and college library
resources as well as methods of organizing vast amounts of information
into usable formats. This skill is highly valuable for the future academic
success of the student and is a great resource for future employment.
• Speaking and adaption: Practice makes perfect. Our lab leaders will be
instructed to integrate several speaking drills and practice debates into
their lab time. Their instruction will center on a key concept of adapting to
audiences of varying degrees of belief and perspective. We will teach
methods for campers to learn the language of one’s audience. Truly
successful debaters will need to learn to speak to audiences from around
the state as well as the country."
Thoughts: This camp is a steal price wise and a great opportunity for
debaters in the region. It is still a young camp and the staff seems to have a heavy
Policy Background besides the PF director. If you live in the area I would look
into this program. Check in with the camp for details on the PF program's

Champion Briefs Institute: Minnesota
"At the Champion Briefs Institute, we take tremendous pride in our Summer
Debate Program. We have designed a curriculum that focuses not only on the
debate-specific knowledge needed to succeed in competition but also on the
public speaking skills that will help students succeed outside of debate. Our goal
is to provide a meaningful experience to novice debaters and four-year veterans
alike, which is why our program is designed to focus on each individual's needs."
Dates: August 3, 2014 - August 17, 2014, The University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis
Deadline to Apply: n/a
Price: Commuter Camp - $1095, Residential Camp - $1850
Practice Rounds:
"Lectures are key to learning new skills but the more important part of learning is
reinforcing the skills. Throughout the program, our students will have the
opportunity to work individually with each of our instructors. They will be able to
fine-tune their speaking, cases, and other key elements or discuss lecture topics
further. This type of one-on-one instruction at a debate camp is unique to the
Champion Briefs Institute and will help debaters reach the next level of success."
Topics Covered:
"Our classes and seminars are each taught by two instructors. Classes are either
presentational or discussion based but every class is interactive. Aside from
classes, we hold seminars and discussions on topics ranging from case writing to
the psychology of judges to the geopolitics of resource security. Our faculty goes
out of its way to make you think harder and deeper about how you debate and
how to win your rounds. Our curriculum includes lectures in these topics and
many more: Case writing, Partner Strategy Planning, Refutation, Persuading a
Judge, Dominating Cross Examination, Using Evidence and
Methodologies, Progressive Styles, Judge Adaptation, Real World
Analytics, Using Philosophical Standpoints, Linking to the Resolution, Closing
the Round"
Thoughts: Champion Briefs is connected with NDF, one of the oldest camps out
there, meaning though a relatively new camp it draws on years of success. The
large staff guarantees one-on-one attention. The camp curriculum appears
comprehensive. Although the staff is very young, and therefore untested as a
teacher/lab leader, you've got some of the most successful recent grad debaters in
the country on staff which means a lot of great information will be passed on.

SOUTH
Georgia Debate Institutes, at The University of Georgia
"While attending the institute, students will receive intensive topic instruction, lectures
and exercises devoted to skill development, research training, and close attention from
some of the nation’s best teaching faculty."
Dates: June 28-July 5, 2014
Deadline to Apply: June 12, 2014
Price: $800, Apply and make your deposit by May 1st and save $100.
Practice Rounds: "Skills work from day one. Every participant at the GDI will give
practice speeches each day, and participate in a minimum of 10 practice debates each. We
believe that there is no substitute for actual speaking practice and the opportunity it
provides for personalized feedback from leading instructors."
Topics Covered: "Top notch faculty, eager to help you achieve your goals. The GDI is
staffed by successful coaches and debaters with a track record of enthusiasm for teaching
debate. Students also work with various faculty and graduate students from the #1 ranked
UGA rhetoric program. We guarantee a low student-to-staff ratio in order to maximize
individual attention and quality of instruction."
Thoughts: GDI features two strong PF faculty members and a great program structure.
This looks like a great Southern region option for new and somewhat experienced
debaters alike. Topics covered are not listed on the website, so if you are a more
advanced debater I would contact GDI and ask what the camp would offer you at your
experience level.

FFI Florida Forensics Institute, Ft. Lauderdale
"We believe that Public Forum debate camps should teach analysis of the resolution,
backed by evidence. Debaters need to learn to reason about the resolutions, and write
logical, well thought-out cases, with excellent, persuasive rhetoric. In-round strategies
such as issue selection, brief/block writing, evidence analysis and skills specific to each
speech in the round are all addressed. Research skills, strategic skills, cross-examination
and delivery are all emphasized and practice rounds are thoroughly critiqued. We
recognize that Public Forum is an event in flux: accommodating to regional differences
and judge adaptation are vital for every competitor to be able to succeed and at FFI we
ensure that students learn to do this. Regardless of age and ability, each debater will
receive individual attention and emerge a strong competitor!"
Dates: July 18- August 1, 2014 (two weeks)
Deadline to Apply: n/a, no refund after May 30, 2014
Price: With accommodations: $2,250; Commuter price: $1,395
Practice Rounds/Topics Covered:
"Consider some of the top reasons to attend FFI:
• Small labs with top instructors from across the country;
• Specialized curriculum for all levels of expertise;
• Individual attention;
• Supervised hotel accommodations;
• Excellent research and instructional facilities;
• Affordable tuition for a CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE; and
• Optional session extension gives students a chance to delve further or switch gears.
Thoughts: Overall camp philosophy and focus on individual attention seems promising.
Probably a more intensive experience than GDI by virtue of being two weeks long.

Hurricane Debate Institute, University of Miami
"The Public Forum program will prepare students to participate and be successful in
competitive debate through a combination of instruction and practice debates. Students
will learn how to construct briefs, deliver the most persuasive speeches, and research
effectively. Students will debate a variety of topics throughout the institute. More
important than instruction, students will have the ability to debate and receive feedback
from a number of experienced debate coaches. This will help students as they can work
on the skills necessary to become successful debaters. This program is appropriate for
students of all ages, but especially rising 9th-12th graders."

Week 2- June 23- June 27
Week 3- June 30- July 3

Two Weeks- $750
Three Weeks- $1050
Practice Rounds: the camp philosophy prioritizes live debate experience, but not exact
number is listed
Topics Covered: "We believe that no other educational activity is as rewarding as
participation in debate. Debate and competitive speaking are fun and exciting. Debaters
learn best by debating. Speakers learn best by speaking. We work to create a comfortable
environment where students can learn by doing, with the guidance of caring and
experienced instructors. Our focus at the Hurricane Debate Institute is to engage personal
development of logic, research abilities and independence that will create an effective
debater and public speaker that can effectively communicate in any given situation."
Thoughts: This camp does not provide housing, so it is limited to commuters in the area.
This is a long-running camp with solid Policy faculty but I am not sure about the Public
Forum staff. The camp philosophy is sound, but I would look into what specific skills and
topics will be targeted for the Public Forum program. I would also ask what each week
will offer so you can make an educated choice about how many weeks to attend. There
may be a variation in what skill level is targeted each week.

EAST
NDF National Debate Forum, Boston, MA
The National Debate Forum (NDF) is the premier institute for Lincoln-Douglas
Debate and Public Forum Debate. Founded in 1995, we have over a decade and a half of
experience in providing quality instruction to students motivated to excel in debate
competitions locally, regionally, and nationally. NDF has a diverse staff to assist students
of all backgrounds to be competitively successful, regardless of the region a debater is
from, or the style of debate they employ. What’s more, the staff is balanced with recent
graduates who were nationally successful and seasoned coaches who have a proven track
record of competitive and educational excellence. Central to the NDF experience is
individualized instruction, which is possible because of limited enrollment and a low
faculty-to-student ratio.
At both institutes students will be exposed to a meticulously crafted and dynamic
curriculum that meets the needs of students at all skill levels. The curriculum is
reevaluated every year, taking into account coach, faculty, and student feedback, and
tweaked to guarantee that we always provide students with the best possible camp
experience."

practice. Students will learn about likely upcoming topics and participate in daily
debates."

Deadline to Apply: May 1, 2014 (tentative)
Price:$1675.00, or $1500.00 with applicable discounts. An early application discount of

Practice Rounds: Daily
Topics Covered: "The Public Forum Workshop will focus on presentation, persuasion,
and argumentation skills. Students will practice writing cases, attend classes to learn
important skills, and have daily practice debates with likely Public Forum topics.
Last year, instructors correctly predicted the September/October topic and the area of the
November topic. Students had the opportunity for advance practice with both topics.
Students will also take a field trip to the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Site, where they will
participate in public debates.
100% of the participants in the 2012 Public Forum Workshop said it made them a better
debater."
"We will maintain a 1:8 or better staff to student ratio."
Thoughts: This camp looks like a great choice for beginning debaters or debaters
transitioning to their first year on Varsity. The emphasis on practice rounds and skill will
serve the younger debater but may not cover the advance topics older debaters should
seek in a camp.

"Founded and directed by experienced professional educators, The Institute for Speech
and Debate is a different kind of speech and debate camp experience. Designed,
managed, and staffed by championship speech and debate coaches, our program is unique
because its mission is learning, compared to simply winning rounds. Our instructors are
from schools that have won four of the last six NFL National Championships and three of
the last five NCFL National Championships in Public Forum Debate, and a host of other
honors in Extemporaneous Speaking and Congressional Debate. We have the most
celebrated faculty in the country. With a small student-to-faculty ratio, the ISD
Workshops will teach you how to go from from Novice to Nationals, or if you're already
an experienced competitor, from Prelims to Finals."

Practice Rounds/Topics Covered:
"Our Workshop will help you improve your basic researching and case creation skills.
We will also develop your crossfire and refutation skills. Our comprehensive approach
will enable you to advance round-winning arguments to a broad spectrum of critics. You
will also work daily on delivery exercises to improve your public speaking skills in
rounds, and which will enhance your overall effectiveness as a communicator.
The ISD’s senior staff members are lifelong and highly qualified high school teachers as
well as coaches. They have been honored with awards for teaching and coaching
excellence. They know the importance of a carefully designed program and of wellcrafted lessons that stress active learning and mastery of skills and concepts. Their
distinguished practice as teachers ensures that ISD's Public Forum Workshop is
powerfully engaging and effective for students.
Students will chose between one of two divisions in Public Forum Debate:
Junior Division: This program will be geared to students with one year or less experience
in Public Forum Debate. The focus will be on developing an understanding of the event,
learning and improving, case writing, argumentation, research, and communication
skills. Students will participate in lab activities every day in which they will receive
progress monitoring of skill development. Students will participate in full rounds of
competitions throughout the institute. Several practice rounds with detailed critiques will
culminate the experience for one week students. Two week students will compete in a
full Institute tournament at the end of the second week.
Senior Division: This program is geared toward students who are experienced in Public
Forum Debate and are looking to refine their skills to go to the highest level of
competition. Students will focus on case development, writing and implementing blocks,
advanced argumentation and framework analysis. Students will also engage in advanced
lectures on content areas. All students will participate in a balanced mix of lectures and
lab work that focuses on one-on-one skill analysis. Several practice rounds with detailed
critiques will culminate the experience for one week students. Two week students will
compete in a full Institute tournament at the end of the second week."
Thoughts: Second year of program, but an amazing PF faculty promises a great
experience. A great price for the faculty experience you will get here. Though it is young
I think this is a great option for new and more experienced debaters alike, especially
given the Junior and Senior Division tracks.

GMU Patriot Debate Institute, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA
"Why the Patriot Debate Institute?
The Patriot Debate Institute strives to offer the most individual attention of any debate
camp. Low student-to-faculty ratios and an extremely active faculty allow us to meet the
individual needs of every debater. We are proud of our ability to tailor our instruction to
the needs to individual participants once assessments are done; tailored instruction is
indeed a unique institute approach. The camp has a focus on debate as an educational &
communicative activity which offers a one of a kind learning experience.
What does the Patriot Debate Institute have for me?
The Patriot Debate Institute offers opportunities for beginning through experienced
debaters. We offer Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum styles of debate. There is
also a public speaking session for those new to debate and a coaches clinic for coaches
hoping to spend the summer fine tuning their skills. Our camp canaccommodate those
brand new to debate, with our special break-out sessions for new debaters, as well as
experienced debaters with our tailored instruction which allows us to design an
experience that targets the needs of all debaters. The Patriot Debate Institute is open to
high school as well as middle school students."

International Summer Debate Camp, Cornell University Ithaca, NY
"The Cornell International Summer Debate Camp is two weeks of intense instruction for
high school students interested in learning the fundamentals of argumentation and debate.
Skills learned will be useful in a variety of competitive formats and styles with
instruction encompassing several debate formats. World Schools, British Parliamentary,
and Public Forum are taught in detail.
Our staff is made up of internationally recognized debate experts, Cornell faculty, and
Cornell students who represent Cornell in national and international competition.
Students will not only learn about debate, but will also have the opportunity to be taught
by members of Cornell University’s faculty. Topics focused in the past include;
nanotechnology, genetically modified crops, prisons and punishment, and hydraulic
fracturing.
Students will also compete in an in house tournament aimed at helping students apply
their skills."
Dates: July 27-August 7, 2014
Deadline to Apply: n/a
Price: $4,500
Practice Rounds: In camp tournament at the end guaranteed
Topics Covered: n/a
Thoughts: This camp will build general skills in argumentation. This looks like a debate
"experience" camp rather than a Public Forum camp. If you are looking for a cool and
interesting camp, I would go to Cornell. If you are looking for an intensive Public Forum
experience I would look into programs that are specific to PF debate. The price is also
rather high even compared to other expensive camps.
