Muscle Test Study Guide!
You must be able to…
1) differentiate between actin and myosin
2) explain the sliding filament theory
3) label a skeletal muscle, including epi/peri/endomysium, fascia, myofibril, fascicle,
tendon, bone, etc (just like the project and/or diagram we drew in class)
4) label (or put in order) the steps in muscle contraction (label tropomyosin, troponin,
actin, myosin, myosin heads, calcium ions, ATP).
5) Explain how ATP is obtained for muscle contraction.
6) List/describe the functions of skeletal muscles
7) List the three types of muscle tissue found in humans and give an example of where
you would find these tissues. Are they voluntary or involuntary?
8) Explain where calcium ions are stored in a muscle when it is not contracting.
9) Draw and label the following items on a sarcomere – A BAND, H ZONE, I BAND, Z
LINE, ACTIN, and MYOSIN.
10) Explain the steps involved in how skeletal muscle fibers are stimulated to contract.
Include words like neurotransmitter, neuron, impulse, t-tubules, sarcoplasmic
reticulum and calcium in your answer.
11) Explain why you get muscle fatigue and cramping.
12) Explain the group actions of muscles and why “muscles never work alone”.
13) Describe the 3 ways that the body gets ATP to power muscle contractions. How long
does each process provide ATP for? What is the equation for each?
14) Differentiate between isomeric and isotonic contractions.
15) Explain what anabolic steroids are.
16) Label the MAJOR muscles of the body that we review in class (other worksheet)
