FATBOY
SLIM
Fatboy Slim’s new
record,
Halfway
Between The Gutter
and The Stars, is
fresh with all the
street beats, pop
hooks, big rock samples and groove as
his enormously successful platinum CD,
You’ve Come a Long
Way Baby. Fatboy
Slim has this time
enlisted funk diva Macy Gray to front two tracks,
“Love Life” and “Demons.” Also, UMPG’s own
funk legend Bootsy Collins plays bass on
“Weapon Of Choice.” The true appeal of “Halfway
Between The Gutter And The Stars” is Fatboy
Slim’s gift for bridging the gap between underground club culture and mainstream pop accessibility. Rolling Stone gave the record a three and
1/2 star review.

ueled by the success of her two million selling, No. 1 single, “I’m
Outta Love,” Anastacia’s debut album, Not That Kind
(Epic/Daylight), has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide and has
reached Gold status in France, Germany, Switzerland and Norway.
Featuring nine songs co-written by Anastacia and material co-written
and produced by UMPG’s own Sturken and Rogers and Travon Potts,
the album reached No. 1 on Billboard Magazine’s Pan-European chart
and remained in its Top 10 for three months.
Recently Anastacia won Best New International Artist (Revelation
Internationale De L’Annee) at the M6 Awards in France (the French
equivalent to MTV) beating out pop stars Christina Aguilera, Shola
Ama, Enrique Iglesias, Moby and Britney Spears. Based on her worldwide record sales, she has also been chosen as Best New Artist by the
World Music Awards, which will be held in Monaco on May 2, and televised worldwide and as a primetime ABC-TV special in June.
The CD is now set to debut in the U.S. in Spring 2001. Anastacia
performed with Sir Elton John on his CBS/VH1 special at Madison
Square Garden. The show was recorded live for his “One Night Only”
CD released in December (See more on Sir Elton John in UMPG
Catalogue News - Page 14).
“Anastacia is a remarkably dynamic vocalist, performer and songwriter. She is exploding around the world and promises to make a huge
impact in the U.S. in the new year. We have been very excited to welcome her to the Universal Music Publishing Group family this year,”
said Tom Sturges, Executive Director of Creative Affairs, Universal

RUDY PEREZ ON A ROLL
WITH NO. 1 CDs FOR
AGUILERA, DE LA HOYA
Latin America
Rudy Perez named Billboard’s No. 1
Producer of Year - Hot Latin Tracks
In the year 2000, the pace has not slowed down for five-time Grammy winner and
two-time ASCAP Latin Writer of the Year, Rudy Perez, as he recently experienced a
unique set of major successes with Latin music’s premier recording acts – Christina
Aguilera, Luis Fonsi, Oscar De La Hoya and Jaci Velasquez. He was also named
Billboard’s 2000 - No. 1 Producer of the Year in the Hot Latin Tracks category.
Perez, who this year produced albums and wrote songs for all four Latin stars,
has generated four No. 1 albums and numerous No. 1 singles.
Having successfully adapted the Spanish version of Christina Aguilera’s hit,
“Genie In A Bottle,” Perez was asked to produce her entire Latin album, Mi Reflejo
Rudy Perez
(RCA), which was released in September. The CD, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s
Latin 50, breaking sales records for a female Latin artist. The first single adapted by
Perez, “[Come On Over – All I Want is You] Ven Conmigo Solamente Tu,” also shot to No. 1 of Billboard’s
Hot Latin Tracks. Perez adapted all the songs from her previous album, including “Por Siempre Tu,” the
Spanish version of her current single, “I Turn To You.” He also wrote most of the album’s new material,
including “Si No Te Hubiera Conocido,” a duet with Luis Fonsi, for whom Perez co-wrote and produced
another No. 1 single from earlier this year entitled, “Imaginame Sin Ti” (Universal Latino).
One month after Aguilera’s release, champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya’s debut album for EMI Latin
(also produced by Perez) went to No. 1 and also spawned a No. 1 single, “Ven a Mi (Run to Me),” which
Perez co-wrote with Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. The single knocked out Aguilera’s second single,
“Por Amarte Asi,” from the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks chart. Perez wrote/co-wrote six
of the songs.
This year Perez also took Jaci Velasquez to No. 1 producing and co-writing her single, “Imagine Me Without You,” which topped the Christian
airplay charts at No. 1 for 4 weeks in a row. Her CD, also produced by Perez, led sales at Christian record store for 2 weeks. Perez also guided Jaci Velasquez’ successful foray into the Latin market in 1999 on Sony Discos with “Llegar A Ti,” which earned her a Grammy nod for best
Latin pop performance. With “Llegar A Ti,” Velásquez topped Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks chart and won the GMA’s Dove Award with producer
Perez for best Spanish-language album of the year.
UMPG RENEWS DEAL WITH
GUSTAVO SANTAOLALLA
Universal Music Publishing Group has re-signed
songwriter-producer Gustavo Santaolalla to a
worldwide publishing deal. One of the most successful Latin American songwriters, producers,
and recording artists, Gustavo Santaolalla is
credited as one of the pioneers of Rock en
Español and the fusion of Argentine and Mexican
rock. Surco Records, his own joint-venture label
with Universal, is one of the most successful
Latin labels today. Having had his own successful solo career since the age of 16, Santaolalla
has produced, together with fellow Argentine
partner Aníbal Kerpel, such gold and platinum
selling artists as Los Prisioneros, Divididos,
Molotov, Bersuit Vergarabat, Julieta Venegas,
Puya, and Latin Grammy winning Rock En
Español band, Café Tacuba. Santaolalla is also
credited with discovering Leon Gieco, one of
Gustavo Santaolalla
Argentina’s beloved folk musicians. Most recently Santaolalla has been preparing for the solo CD debut of Colombian rocker Juane
(ex-leader of Ekhymosis), Bersuit Vergarabat’s next CD, Hijos del Culo, and a new
album by Latin Grammy nominated Erica García, Argentina’s top female rocker for
release on Surco/Universal in 2001.

Territory Spotlight - Sweden
UMPG SWEDEN’S ELITE STABLE
OF SONGWRITERS PRODUCE STRING OF
POP HITS FOR WESTLIFE,
BACKSTREET BOYS, BRITNEY SPEARS
As one of Universal Music Publishing Group’s leading territories, UMPG
Sweden is generating a flurry of international chart activity for the world’s
biggest pop bands. Recent hit songs for Westlife, Britney Spears,
Backstreet Boys, and others have put UMPG Sweden’s top songwriters,
including Alexander Kronlund, Franciz, Pelle Nylen and Lisa Miskovsky,
in hot demand. This, combined with relationships with Cheiron Productions
and Murlyn Music, continues to keep the UMPG Swedish tunesmiths quite
active. “In Sweden,

what they were looking for – a strong
sense of melody and
more than just beats. With artists and A&R execs now migrating to Sweden
looking for good songs, the doors have burst open to the international market and there doesn’t seem to be any sign of slowing down in the near future,”
says Martin Ingestrom, Managing Director of UMPG
Sweden.
ALEXANDER KRONLUND
Signed to UMPG for more than 7 years, songwriter
Alexander Kronlund, who co-wrote Meja’s 1 million
selling debut album on Sony, recently co-wrote two
songs for Britney Spears sophomore CD, Oops I
Did It Again. Kronlund co-wrote her hit single,
“Lucky,” with Max Martin and Rami and also coBritney Spears
wrote “Don’t Go Knockin’ On My Door.” As a nonexclusive member of the Cheiron production team,
Kronlund and principal Max Martin are working together on a variety of new
projects. Having also worked with Backstreet Boys and N’Sync, Kronlund is
currently co-writing with Swedish star Robyn and Universal Sweden act
Lambretta.
FRANCIZ
When the Backstreet Boys were recording in Stockholm with Cheiron,
UMPG’s creative team pitched Franciz (half of the Franciz and LePont writing team) to Martin Dodd at Zomba, which resulted in meeting between the
songwriters and the band. Consequently, Backstreet Boys recorded two of
their songs for their current smash CD, Black and Blue (one of which was
produced by Franciz & LePont). With this success and a new track in the
works for Jessica Simpson, UMPG expects many exciting things to come
from Franciz.
Backstreet Boys
LISA MISKOVSKY
Currently working on her own solo album to be
released in 2001 on Stockholm Records, Lisa
Miskovsky co-wrote Backstreet Boys new hit
single, “Shape of My Heart,” with Max Martin
and Rami. The song, originally written for
Miskovsky’s own album, was passed along to
the Backstreet Boys by Max Martin when
Miskovsky determined it didn’t fit her style.
PELLE NYLEN
A new signing to UMPG, Pelle Nylen co-wrote Westlife’s hit single, “My
Love,” which debuted at No. 1 in the UK. He recently worked with new MCA
Records U.S. signing, Carly Hennessy. Nylen is
actively co-writing with some of UMPG’s main
U.K. writers and the Swedish songwriting elite,
including former Cheiron writers Jorgen
Elofsson and Andreas Carlsson. Following the
Westlife single, Nylen has song requests coming in from around the world.

Under the direction of Managing
Director, Martin Ingestrom, Universal
Music Publishing Group Sweden is one
of UMPG’s leading territories featuring
some of Europe’s most elite talent
including international artists Meja,

ABBA, Clawfinger and Aqua, as well as
hot local acts Markoolio, Sahara
Hotnights, Camilla Brinck, Caesar’s

RONDOR
CATALOGUE SPOTLIGHTS:
THE BEACH BOYS
Among the major catalogues that Rondor Music controls, The Beach Boys is one of the most
extraordinary. With songs like, “Help Me Rhonda,” “I Get Around,” and “Good Vibrations,”
the Beach Boys sound is emblematic of a timeless age of innocence in American music.
THE CARPENTERS
Rondor’s veteran writer of 31 years, Richard Carpenter, has compiled an incredible body of work— the Carpenters catalogue, which
has retained a timeless status with its rich harmonies and pop sensibility. A whole new generation is expressing an appreciation for
this music with covers of “Top of The World,” “Yesterday Once
More,” and “Merry Christmas Darling”. Writers Paul Williams and
Roger Nichols contributed such songs as “Rainy Days and
Mondays,” and “We’ve Only Just Begun,” which are also a part of
this rich catalogue.
THE EAST MEMPHIS MUSIC CATALOGUE
With writers and performers such as Otis Redding, Wilson
Pickett, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, Booker T., Steve Cropper
and David Porter, the soul of Stax Records and Rondor Music's
East Memphis catalogue is an important part of American history. Thriving during an era of civil unrest it showed the world that
music was a beautiful blend of color. It gave us a much grittier
and sexier sound than what was being released in Detroit, which
was much more polished. Songs like, "I'm A Soulman," "Midnight
Hour," "Green Onions," "Walk-in The Dog," and "Sittin' On The
Dock Of The Bay," are classic works that define our musical heritage. Ron Moss, Senior Director of A&R for Rondor Music, said,
"We feel honored here at Rondor to be trusted guardians of this
rich history."

UMPG’s Successful New
Administration and System
Model To Be Adopted for
Rondor Integration
When MCA and PolyGram merged to form
UMPG as we know it today, it was decided that
the company would be best served by utilizing
PolyGram’s fully integrated, centralized, automated administrative and system model (formerly “PIPS”) to provide the consistency and
completeness demanded to run the joint companies systems efficiently
and effectively.
Theo Strikkers, Director
of Worldwide Admini-stration , and Mike Donegan,
Director
of
Business
Information Systems, were
primarily responsible for
this critical transition and
Strikkers
managed it successfully.
By combining the MCA
data within their unique, centralized data system, UMPG’s 800,000 copyrights are now
administered Internationally via “PIPS”. The
system includes a central administrative headquarters (located in London) , three regional
hubs (Los Angeles, London and Hong Kong)
and 51 systems worldwide . Through this network, UMPG manages and circulates approximately 800,000 copyrights and processes millions of royalty transactions around the world.
With single points of data entry, UMPG’s system makes the territory of acquisition responsible for the completeness of their repertoire in all
territories. This centralized
model gives UMPG a commercial, competitive edge.
“In a rapidly expanding
and evolving publishing
landscape, a scalable,
centralized system such as
UMPG’s is critical.” said
Michael J Sammis, Chief
Donegan
Financial Officer. “Mike
and Theo have developed
a global royalty administration methodology
which soundly differentiates our business
model from that of our competition. They are
motivated executives who’ve taken fundamental backoffice administration to a new level,
ensuring maximized, global collections on all of
our works. The value proposition this creates
for UMPG, our customers and clients is
unequalled.”
Rondor International Integration
In an effort to further capitalize on the efficiencies created by this system, the Rondor catalog
has already been converted and integrated.
Continued integration procedures will be implemented throughout the first half of 2001 under
the supervision of Mike and Theo, who continue to focus their efforts on global administration
synergies.

song, "Where Are You Christmas," (recorded by Faith Hill)
which was featured in The Grinch (Universal) feature film

Will Jennings and James Horner and is another strong
Oscar hopeful.

Film and TV Spotlight:
LAURENCE KAYE
Head of Film and TV
Music - U.K.
As Head of Film and TV music for UMPG’s UK
office, Laurence Kaye manages an eight person staff which handles the licensing of music
for motion pictures, TV, advertising as well as
multi-media, a new growth area. Since Kaye joined the company more than five years
ago, the department has experienced revenue growth of more than 600%, which is
attributed in part to growth in the market for music in commercials.
“It’s cool for bands to have their music in commercials. Now everyone wants a
new Fatboy Slim,” says Kaye. In the UK, and most of Europe, 50% of licensing
income is generated from advertising. Kaye says that Levi’s started the trend in the
UK by using a number of classic soul songs in hugely successful commercials.
In order to market UMPG’s extensive catalogue, the department frequently produces samplers of new and catalogue material. “They have a long shelf life and the
response is phenomenal,” he says.
Kaye’s team also works closely with Universal’s record companies and acquires
film soundtrack albums (e.g. Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels) on their behalf,
which can sometimes aid to increase the film’s music budgets and UMPG’s overall
chances of placing music in the film. “Due to lower film budgets in the UK, the work
we do here has to be, in a sense, more creative. We find hidden gems, and hits
before they are hits -- the songs production companies can afford to license,” added
Kaye.
After 12 years experience working for several major labels and music publishing
companies, Kaye says that the volume and intensity of his work (including reading
scripts, listening to music, watching TV, meeting with directors, and creative execs)
has never waned but is part of the thrill. He muses, “There are days when I want to
