"What's the most important letter in 'UNIVERSITY?' It is YOU! "You see, college is like a runway, and you are a pilot. You roll along, enjoying the scenery, and hopefully gaining momentum and purpose because at the end of the runway is the CLIFF known as 'the rest of your life.' Whether you take off - or not - has a lot to do with the dreams you have for your life (which provide the LIFT), and your ability to manage yourself and your time (which provides the THRUST), during these exciting years. Come enjoy an hour where you will laugh, you will think and dream, and you will leave with tips and tools to make this semester - and the ones that follow - your best ever." Dan Moore President of The Southwestern Company Dan Moore attended Harvard University, from which he graduated with honors in three years. He also holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University, where he was selected Class Speaker and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He started in the business world the same way tens of thousands of others over the years have – by running his own business in The Southwestern Company’s summer sales and business leadership internship program. He started as an eighteen year-old freshman, and is today President of the company. Upon graduation from Harvard, he was named District Sales Manager, responsible for recruiting and sales growth from states in both New England and the Southwest. Southwestern is one of the oldest companies in America, having begun business operations in 1855, with a nationwide reputation for teaching personal selling skills. However, the company had never had a formal marketing/sales development focus. Dan was asked to assume the role of Marketing Development Manager. In that role, and his subsequent promotions to Director of Marketing and then Vice-President of Business Development, his responsibilities grew to include product development and sales promotion, marketing research, business analysis, budgeting and internal operations, public relations, sales training, recruiting development, and business process improvement. As a member of the New Business Team for the parent company, Southwestern/Great American, Dan is responsible for vetting and incubating new business ideas. Among them are Southwestern Business Resources, an international search and recruitment firm, and Southwestern Consulting, which provides sales and sales management consulting for corporations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Now as President of The Southwestern Company, Dan coordinates the internal processes of the company while continuing to interface with its external suppliers and partners and the thousands of dealers in the company’s products. He takes a personal hand in training these dealers; all told, he has trained more than 70,000 people how to run a business, how to lead, and how to get on the path toward achieving their goals in life. Dan speaks frequently to business audiences and has been an invited speaker at many universities across North America and Europe including Vanderbilt University, the University of Florida, the University of Nebraska, the University of Kentucky, the University of British Columbia, Cambridge University, Strathclyde University, and the University of Edinburgh. He believes strongly that the future of business is being created every day in the minds and hearts of entrepreneurial young people seeking an opportunity to be all they can be.
