Print me a River Key Stage 2 Summary The workshop provides an opportunity to develop practical skills and gain inspiration from the location of the museum, paintings in the galleries and the work of famous artists. Workshop Contents Education Centre (Museum Tutor led) • • • Looking at the river to identify colours, shapes and lines in the water and to make general observations. Watching a PowerPoint presentation to see how artists use different techniques to print and showing Examples of work by artists from different cultures including Hokusai and Matisse. Pupils screen print their own compositions, overlaying two colours and applying collage into the wet ink. Bridge Link (Museum Tutor led) If you have previously booked a boat trip, it will replace this session. • The focus of this activity is the huge abstract painting by John Piper, ‘Landscape of Two Seasons’. • Pupils make their own versions using lines, shapes and colours, working in mixed media. Galleries (Teacher led) • • Pupils can be shown the series of black and white etchings of the river Thames from the 1750s, the coloured ‘Thames Suite’ etchings by Julian Trevelyan, the book illustrations for Wind in the Willows and the lithograph by Edwin la Dell, all in the River Gallery. Pupils might draw a boat, fish or other objects that pupils might colour in back at school and cut and stick onto their screen printed water background.
