About the Album
A series of castoffs, demos, and B-sides as an album release? Isn't that what bands do
when, you know, they're getting old and past their prime, looking to pull a little more
milk from the cash cow? Maybe most bands, but like the convention-defying music they
play (a band playing punk rock on a piano, working the ears with far more grit, power,
and edginess than most guitar-based punk acts?), a Dresden Dolls compilation breaks all
the rules, releasing B-sides and album leftovers in a grouping that, given its component
parts, is surprising in its cohesiveness, and creating a release chock full of tracks that
other groups would kill to have on their mainline studio records.
Take "Dear Jenny," the bouncy tune that leads off No, Virginia... with a combination of
off-beat accents and jarring, banged out chords, straight hook choruses, and
singer/pianist Amanda Palmer's mix of harmonious and off-kilter vocals that calls to
mind the chaos of fan-favorite "Boy Anachronism" but with a more mature writing style:
after developing an appreciation for the song's extensive sonic palette as it batters down
your ear drums, then teasing out the requisite faded glory melancholy of the lyrics (a
standard Amanda Palmer affair of black humor and darkened hopes in a hospital room),
you'll suddenly find you can't get the song out of your head and just like that, you're
hooked.
Fans of past Dolls' work will be delighted to know this experience repeats itself with
every track, pausing only to switch gears with the timbre of the material: from the
pop-infused tones of "Night Reconnaissance," where cheery music lines contrast with the
bitter lyrics of outsider angst of suburbia (and the blessed release from conformity in
stealing lawn ornaments at night) to the insistent dramatic show-tune-style thumping of
"Ultima Esperanza;" from the wonderfully heavy-handed innuendos dodging in and out
of an artfully simple melody in "The Gardener," to the slow, dramatic lament of past
loves lost and the necessity of living for the present in "Boston," the Dolls continue to
write musical circles of greater and greater sophistication around their peers, all while
maintaining the biting edge that has always made their music so much fun.
