About the Album
Thanks to the efforts of bands (think Job For A Cowboy) more talented in the area of
coattail riding than musical innovation, deathcore as a genre has gotten a pretty bad
rap: those who leave expectations at the door and embrace the possibility for another
combination of metal and hardcore often wonder why combining brutality, melody, and
breakdowns into one package creates any sort of show-stopping effort. Fortunately,
Whitechapel's most recent release provides a solution: if nothing else, the alchemy of
those three elements needed to happen for this very strong album to hit the scene and
please the ears of metal fans everywhere.
The album's hook is simple: on every song, Whitechapel finds a way to include the
standard items of the genre's progenitor styles -- items like blast beats, guttural growls,
At The Gates-like melody flairs, heavy riffing taken from the pages of Lamb of God's
playbook and slow, heavy slam passages -- into one seamless line that grabs the
attention and rocks the senses without becoming formulaic. However, while every track
offers these components, the ratio differs from track to track, allowing Whitechapel to
redefine deathcore over and over again as they please. The title track, for example,
begins with a take on a traditional death song structure that steams along, taking in its
stride the subtle introduction of a half-time melodic line, before shifting -- via a clever
set up -- into a technical slow speed slam a minute into the song that itself shifts into a
dark melodic bridge before the cycle repeats. "Possession" alternates between hardcore
and melodic passages that manage to remain separately identifiable without feelings of
interference, while "Death Becomes Him" revels in an almost gothic sensibility overlaid
with slam elements that underpins a horrific majesty in the album's only instrumental
selection.
By successfully melding the different components of deathcore into new visions without
compromising their source material, Whitechapel offers a little something for every
open-minded metal fan, no matter what their background. This Is Exile finds the band in
the enviable position of gateway drug and potential savior of the deathcore idiom -- the
