After a long winter, with little snow and even less sunshine, spring arrived at last. The wonderful May sun has finally lured us out of the house and into the fresh green of the outdoors. The adverts for “May butter” came thick and fast in Germany with colourful flowering meadows and fresh, green grass (May butter is well-known in Germany for having a significantly better quality). Photo: Tanja Bolte Thanks to all the rain we’ve had this year the grass will grow especially green and lush. Who doesn’t dream of a refreshing blue pool among the fresh green grass of their garden? “Don’t dream your life, live your dream!” – Many families really do put the spirit of this popular wall tattoo into practice: now is the perfect time to plan your own swimming pool! With the first extended period of good weather, we once again put in the overtime. From the after-sales service, to production and dispatch, we at SPECK Pumpen are all working hard so that you can live your dream. We are happy to sweat a bit more again this summer in the hope of many happy and fresh customers here in Germany and overseas. Your Armin Herger Managing Director SPECK Pumpen Verkaufsgesellschaft GmbH 2 COMPANY SPECK POMPEN NEDERLAND Water and fire in the Netherlands Half of our neighbouring country to the north lies less than a meter above sea level. A good quarter of it is even below sea level. Every Netherlander learns to swim at the age of five - not through fear of the sea, but through their love of water. Around 3,000 km of embankments protect the Netherlanders against flooding. Surfaces that are very important for the country: with approximately 400 inhabitants per square meter it is one of the most densely populated countries on earth. Our colleagues from SPECK Pompen Nederland report on how the “Dutch”, as we often wrongly refer to our neighbours, are not only enthusiastic swimmers, but absolute connoisseurs of wellness and relaxation. Zevenaar, Netherlands – directly behind the German border lies Zevenaar. The close proximity to the border, as well as good motorway and railway connections have attracted many logistics companies. Our representation also has its offices in this borough. Our pumps normally need less than 24 hours from Neunkirchen to Zevenaar. 1 SPECK Pompen Nederland BV was founded in 1985 by Jan Aghina. Charl Stapelbroek started working there in 1988 as a technician. Trained both in economics and in law, he soon moved into the sales department. Finally in 1999 he took over the company and the management. He puts a lot of value on team spirit and therefore appointed Alex Bolder, Head of Sales and power of attorney, and Debby Elfrink, Back Office Manager, company managers. His team suffered a severe setback: on 6 September 2013 a neighbouring plastics factory set on fire. The fire spread quickly and neither the country’s abundance of water nor the 100 fire fighters could prevent SPECK Pompen’s administration offices, warehouse and fleet of vehicles from being completely destroyed within just a few hours. Thank goodness no one was injured! After an improvised temporary space solution, they were able to move into their new building in May 2014 and they certainly made the most of being able 2 COMPANY SPECK POMPEN NEDERLAND Various pumps have to be repaired or replaced quickly, professionally and without complication. Apart from the right language, what counts is a well arranged spare parts and pump warehouse as the ships aren’t in the docks for long. SPECK Pompen counts well-known shipyards and the Netherlands marine among their shipping customers. AK version BADU pumps are also put to use in areas other than those intended. Designed for thermal pools, these pumps are often also used in fish farming in the Netherlands due to their corrosion resistance against saltwater. Every town has a swimming pool and swimming les sons were an integral part of the curriculum until just recently. The Netherlanders are very hard-working people and therefore like to use their free time to relax. Charl Stapelbroek describes the public swimming pool market “Everything has to be available: slides, whirlpool, sauna, saltwater pool, massage etc.” That goes for the camping and caravanning population too – campsites in the Netherlands mostly have their own, well-equipped swimming pool. to start from scratch. The architecture and interior of the building, as well as the operational organisation was designed in a modern style. Seeing as there was no longer a paper archive, it was easy to build up a paper-free office structure. Since January 2015 the representation in Zevenaar has been corresponding in English. “We are a historically matured trade country! We have many international contacts – among which there are more and more major customers who speak English” is Stapelbroek’s reasoning behind the language change. Countless ships from all over the world dock in Rotterdam harbour each day and with them come many international enquiries for our colleagues. 3 Well-equipped can also be said of the new workshop at SPECK Pompen – a digital test stand for centrifugal pumps with a flow rate of up to 150 m³/h leaves no question unanswered when it comes to repairs. This year our Netherlanders supplied a public pool with 102 BADU BK swimming pool solar panels for environmentally friendly pool heating. Three new indoor pools were assembled completely with SPECK pumps. Many other interesting projects are in the planning phase and ensure that the swimming pool market in the Netherlands definitely won’t go under anytime soon! 1 Our team in the Netherlands Photo: SPECK Pompen Nederland 2 The new building in Zevenaar Photo: SPECK Pompen Nederland 3 Paperless and modern: The interior Photo: SPECK Pompen Nederland 3 4 COMPANY TRADE FAIRS SPECK Pumpen on tour The spring trade fairs led seamlessly into the main season and SPECK remains international and on the move in 2015. Back from the last professional event of the spring in Singapore and it’s straight into the main season for our trade fair and sales team. Whatever happens now we will discuss in depth at the industry trade fairs in Europe in autumn. Don’t miss out! Nothing is more important to us after a turbulent summer than having a little time for direct and personal contact to our partners and customers. We are looking forward to seeing you! SPECK Pumpen in Singapore: Hermann Speck, Christoph Ott, Armin Herger and Thanusak Phungdet Photo: SPECK Pumpen Piscina Splash! Asia, Singapore – although four years have passed since SPECK’s first trade fair appearance in Singapore, we can still talk of pioneer work this time around, at least when comparing the Southeast Asian market with the familiar markets in Europe. Although for our European standards a rather low turnout, the event organisers in Singapore were very pleased to welcome more than 1,000 visitors to the trade fair. For us it was also a very successful event. Many decision-makers from the entire region, among others the neighbouring countries Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Australia, visited the SPECK Pumpen booth. The market there is developing slowly but surely and has a lot of potential. Head of Sales BADU, Christoph Ott summarised “We have already been successful for some years in Southeast Asia. We have very good contacts that we were able to maintain at the Piscine Splash! which means that Singapore will also be worth a visit for us in 2017!” We expect to see you in Barcelona, Cologne and Amsterdam at the end of the season for a general conclusion to the German and European swimming pool markets. We’re looking forward to hearing your evaluations and hope that we will be able to look back on a good season together. Of course we also look forward to seeing your reactions to our new ideas. Please be sure to get in touch and request your trade fair entry tickets in good time! info@speck-pumps.com AUTUMN TRADE FAIRS 2015 Piscina, Barcelona, Spain 13.10.-16.10.2015 International aquatic exhibition GRAN VIA, hall P2, level 0, street B, booth no. 268 Aquanale, Cologne, Germany 27.10.-30.10.2015 International trade fair for sauna.pool.ambience Hall 6.1, booth no. 20/21 C/D Aquatech, Amsterdam, Netherlands 03.11.-06.11.2015 International trade exhibition for process, drinking and waste water technology Hall 1, booth no. 01.206 TECHNOLOGIES GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB REGENSBURG Above all the pump control saves us a lot of time!« Christian Löffl, Head Green Keeper once the maximum water level is reached. If the water levels reach critical, the whole unit turns off and an error message is sent to the green keeper’s smartphone. It’s also possible to control the system manually via a smartphone and to retrieve parameters such as the water level, total pressure and operating conditions. 1 Perfect green for a princely tee There’s been no hunting in the Thiergarten in Regensburg for some time now, even if the 2,000+ antlers in the Princes from Thurn and Taxis’ hunting lodge suggest this. Today the approximately 80 hector area scores top marks above all for its perfect grass. The “Golf - und Land-Club Regensburg e.V.” (Golf and country club in Regensburg) is voted among Germany’s best golf courses year after year. That has a lot to do with the top maintained greens and these are the main focus for the guests of the former hunting reserve, as well as for the main green keepers. They keep the course in top condition. Christian Löffl leads the complex tasks. One of which is the irrigation. We have built an individual control so that he can sleep at night! Jagdschloss Thiergarten, Regensburg – until now the green keeper on duty often had “sleepless nights”. The problem being that the lawns on the golf course have to be irrigated, but must not be flooded! A pond contains enough water for the irrigation and pumps use this to fill a smaller pond in the middle of the golf course, about 2 km away. There, a booster unit extracts water for the irrigation of the lawns. Depending on the water levels and demand, the pumps have to be turned on by hand at night. There is a risk of the small pond flooding if the pumps aren’t turned off in time. A convenient solution was not only required to secure a healthy night’s sleep, the reduction of the energy consumption, time required and pump load were also essential, as well as a constantly optimal water level in the pond. Christian Löffl and his team won’t get bored. Alongside the lawns they spend approximately two thirds of their time in operations buildings with electrical and mechanical engineering as well as the remote control of the irrigation system. 1 Stefan Weich (electrical engineering contractor), Christian Löffl (Head Green Keeper) and Daniel Pfister (SPECK Pumpen) Photo: Paul Mazurek 2 Lawn irrigation and a full pond at the golf and country club in Regensburg Photo: Paul Mazurek One problem stood in the way of the control’s implementation for a long time: there is no electrical connection between the two ponds. Using diggers across 2 km through the middle of the golf course was out of the question. Luckily the club’s electrician and SPECK Pumpen service partner, Stefan Weich, contacted the right man. Our sales representative Daniel Pfister solved the problem using two GSM modules. A submersible pressure transmitter now records the water level in the pond. If the minimum water level has been reached, the “upper control” sends a start command via text message to the “lower control” in the pump in the larger pond. These then start with a soft start and are stopped in exactly the same way 2 5 6 PEOPLE TRAINING The view beyond the pump To do an apprenticeship is to broaden your horizons. At SPECK Pumpen this also includes taking in the view be yond the pump, so to say. What do the other colleagues do? How are the departments made up? And how does that all come together? In future the junior employees will not only have to know their own role, but should also be able to constructively scrutinise, which is great when that’s what the apprentices are already doing now! 1 1 Torsten Hahn and our apprentices on a tour of the company Photo: SPECK Pumpen 2 The 16 apprentices arrive at their destination: SPECK Pumpen in Roth Photo: SPECK Pumpen 2 It was the apprentices‘ explicit request to get to know another company and so they set out to explore SPECK Pumpen in Roth. Both pump manufacturers are independent from each other and trace back to a family run company, founded in 1909. The different product range, varied production processes and dif ferent company structure were of great inter est to the 16 apprentices. and achieve the same quality standards by doing the exact opposite? There, one member of staff takes on all work steps up until the final testing of the pump. The apprentices were able to answer many of the questions themselves based on the products and their fields of application. Whereas swimming pool circulation pumps are mainly produced as a range, pumps for special industrial fields of application have, to a high degree, to be produced individually. Roth bei Nürnberg – accompanied by the Training Manager Sylvia Schmitt, the three year groups set off in two busses, and with lots of questions, to visit the pump manufacturer SPECK in Roth. Torsten Hahn, Head of Quality Management, was ready with the answers. He sincerely welcomed the group, talked them through the company presentation and led them on a tour of the company. The youngsters also got to know a different warehousing system, marvelled at the work speed of the new CNC machine compared to an old one and gained and interesting insight into an order management system which uses coloured barcodes. Why is it more effective and better for quality standards to have multiple production staff implement a certain work step each in Neunkirchen? Why do the staff in Roth maintain that they are able to save time After being invited to dine in the canteen the group moved on. So that they would have time to take everything in, they made a little stop off at the bowl ing alley. Finally, on their day out they learned that good relations are also an essential factor for success.
