Time Management
At the time management presentation, Adan Chaidez Academic Advisor from the
Academic Advising Center at Lassen Hall 1013, talked to us about time management. He
mentioned some responsibilities that we as students may have that can overwhelm us.
These factors can be from being a full time student, having a part time job, and personal or
social life. Some other factors can be not eating or sleeping correctly, commuting, meeting
up with your professor during office hours or tutoring. All of these can cause stress that we
may not know how handle or react to it. We need to learn how to get organized so we do
not miss the important dates or have any type of misunderstandings with the professors.
We might feel lost or alone with all of this on our shoulders but we need to know how to
ask for help and use the services Sacramento State has to offer us.
To manage all of these factors we can start by asking for help but we need to be
flexible with our and other people’s schedules the make time to receive the help. To handle
all of these we can eliminate procrastination, balance priorities, set goals, and strategize.
By balancing priorities we do what is most important first, from finishing a project that is
due in two days rather than going out to a party. Interruptions also need to be eliminated
for example; our electronics are a big interruptions now a days. We are either on our
phones on the social media or texting our friends. Also by setting goals to what we want to
accomplish can help motivate ourselves to not loose focus on our path. We need to come
up with a strategy or schedule that will help us balance and mange all of these tasks. There
are different of schedules we can create weather it is weekly, monthly, to-do-list, or even
semester calendar. We need to choose what best works for us individually so we each can
understand our own calendar clearly.
I think this presentation went great because we received very good information that
we as students should take advantage of to be successful. During the presentation when the
advisor had an activity with balloons representing our responsibilities and Akashdeep had
to keep them up without touching the ground, which he couldn’t at first, until he had help
from his fellow classmates he was able to manage all of them. That is when the advisor
referred to us about asking for help and knowing how to balance our priorities will help us
manage our time. I learned some strategies for my own success her at Sacramento State.
This presentation will help me contribute to my success as a student at Sacramento
State by me following these strategies and acting on them. In high school I would not ask a
lot questions and I would procrastinate a lot as well. I will set goals and be more organized
to change these bad habits so I can succeed. For example, I will create my to-do-list so I
can check of things one by one after I complete them. I can also make a semester calendar
that is easy to read, write deadlines, and study for finals even though they are weeks away.
This can help me stay alert with my responsibilities and not miss one single one. Also I can
ask for help whether it is at a tutoring center or the professor’s office hours, so I can ask
any questions one on one and understand the concept more. If I need to go into a
professor’s office ours I will need to be flexible with my schedule to go and get that help.
Eliminating procrastination is one of the issues I will need to do and try to do my
homework first before I go out to the gym or hang out with friends. I will also need to
make some time for my social life and family responsibilities to release my stress from
school. Most importantly I will need a very good flexible strategy to manage my time
carefully and reach my goals and accomplish every single responsibility.
