From November 11-13th, national economic authorities, equipment
vendors, lessors and financial services providers convened at the
Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, Dubai in order to discuss how best to
tap into the hitherto unfulfilled potential of the Middle Eastern
leasing market. Speakers from reputable organizations such as the
IFC, Siemens Financial Services and Baker & McKenzie explained
to prospective players how to navigate the legal environment and
establish compliant leasing businesses in the region.
The summit opened with the summit’s honorary chairman, Rafael
Castillo from the Alta Group, who gave a memorable speech which
included a summary of the importance of the leasing industry in driving and propelling economic growth and development.
This was particularly relevant to the Middle East’s situation whose current economic expansion is causing demand for leasing
services to skyrocket. The situation is much like China 10 years ago and with Duxes’ previous expertise in the Chinese leasing
industry, this is an exciting new opportunity.
Prior to the main event, there was a ‘Fleet Leasing Special’ event
which included a comprehensive overview of the Middle Eastern
fleet leasing market with renowned speakers such as Hicham Boueri
from LeasePlan Emirates and a panel discussion on the potential
areas of growth for vehicle rental and leasing in the Middle East.
The first day of the event consisted of a series of talks giving an
overview of the leasing market with a summary of the existing legal
supervision of the leasing industry, the prospects for mergers and
acquisitions and the role of Islamic finance in the leasing industry.
Highlights of day one’s proceedings included Jean-Luc Zahn’s
presentation on investing in non-matured commercial finance
markets and Ian Robertson’s talk on risk management in residual
value management. The former was particularly interesting for
those who have yet in invest in the Middle East and offered a lot
experience gained through his role as Head of Investments and
Transactions Advisory while the latter offered concrete, applicable
advice.
The second day of the summit consisted of industry-specific talks
on areas such as equipment financing, asset-based financing for
construction equipment and hotspots of growth such as healthcare
and IT equipment. Seasoned veterans from the leasing industry also
gave their valuable insights into recruiting the best talent available
and how to motivate your staff to give their utmost towards a
common goal. However, the most prominent feature of the day was
the discussions and talks on the construction machinery leasing
industry. This included a joint-presentation on the multitude of
opportunities for asset-based financing given by Manitowoc’s VP of
Sales for the Middle East & English-Speaking Africa, David Semple,
and the Director of Manitowoc Finance EMEA, Jean Babkine.

As Duxes’ first foray in the Middle Eastern market, this was a
particularly exciting event and anticipation was high among all
present. By the summit’s end, all the attendees left having learned a
cornucopia of new and useful information with a clear idea of how
to seize the opportunities present in the Middle East. Delegates
consistently gave positive feedback following the seminar, praising
the abundance of time for networking in particular, and said that
they are looking forward to returning to the next Middle East
Leasing Summit.
