Senior Internship Study Program
Malden High School
2011-2012
Dear seniors:
The Malden High School Senior Internship Program provides eligible seniors with the opportunity to
investigate a career, explore an interest, or to work on a self-designed project. Seniors may also be
allowed to work as a team with other members of the senior class. Eligible seniors will be granted
permission and time to leave Malden High School to work on their project and to collaborate with
professionals in their area of interest. Upon completion of the internship site work, seniors will be
required to write a four to five page paper on their experiences and outcomes. Seniors will also be
required to share this learning experience by creating a presentation and participating in the Senior
Internship Exhibition. The exhibition will be held on May 30, 2012 in the Finn Gym from 9:00 am to
12:00 p.m.
Any senior who successfully meets graduation requirements by the end of third quarter and who is in
good standing, will be eligible to participate in the internship program. Eligible seniors must submit a
PROPOSAL, which describes their internship and expected outcomes, by March 16, 2012. Seniors
must also seek a GUIDE, the outside professional or specialist, who will be working with them at the
internship site or assisting them with the project. Each intern will be assigned a MENTOR from the
staff at Malden High School who will monitor and evaluate his or her performance. Once a proposal
has been submitted along with the House Principal & Guidance Approval Form, which will verify
that the senior is academically and socially in good standing and has no outstanding obligations, it will
be reviewed by the Senior Internship Committee. If the proposal is approved by the committee, the
senior will receive written confirmation on the acceptance of his or her internship. If the senior fails to
make adequate progress, behaves inappropriately or violates the terms of the proposal, the committee
can revoke approval. If the internship is revoked at anytime, the senior will return to Malden High
School and continue to follow his or her program of study. The senior will also be required to makeup
all work assigned from the beginning of the internship.

Program Descriptors
Project:
It is a plan designed by the student to investigate a career, explore an interest, invent a project of his or her own design
or to extend an existing school project. It involves an internship in which the student works with a supervising adult,
referred to as the guide. A staff member from MHS will be assigned to each student and referred to as the mentor. It
is an opportunity for seniors to follow their passions and to exhibit their creativity. It is NOT a JOB and should not be
viewed as such. There is no monetary compensation.
Proposal:
This is the plan of action in which the project is described and the guidelines established. It is the role of the intern to
contact the guide prior to submitting his or her proposal. The guide can provide insight and support with the design of
the project. The proposal must be submitted no later than March 16, 2012. See proposal form for more information
Guide:
This is the specialist in the field of interest, who will work closely with the intern. He or she will share his or her
expertise and knowledge and direct the learning experience. The Guide must sign a release form granting permission
for a CORI to be conducted prior to working with the senior intern. The Guide may also require the intern to sign a
CORI and/or release from liability form. If the intern is unable to meet with the guide as scheduled, the intern
must contact the guide.
Mentor:
A staff member at Malden High School who monitors the intern’s progress and evaluates the entire project. The
intern will be responsible to communicate with his or her mentor either through meetings, emails, phone calls and to
report his or her progress and any difficulties encountered.
Time Frame:
The internship will be conducted over a five week period in which the intern is expected to work a minimum of thirty
hours per week. It will begin on April 24, 2012 and end on May 25, 2012. An exhibit will be held on May 30, 2012
from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Finn Gym.
Approval & Permission Forms:
There are several approval and permission forms which need to be completed prior to the start of the internship. It is
the responsibility of the intern to obtain these signatures. No internship will begin without the appropriate signatures.
Work Logs
This is a written record of your daily experiences during the internship. The senior is to complete a work log for each
week of the internship. Five work logs are to be passed in with the written paper to the mentor.
Good Standing Criteria
A senior is deemed in good standing if he or she has abided by the rules and regulations established in the
Student/Parent Guide, particularly in regards to attendance and conduct during the senior year. This determination
will be made by the student’s house principal. The senior must also have completed and successfully passed all the
coursework required to satisfy his or her graduation requirements prior to beginning of his or her internship.
Grading
Seniors on internship who are not taking Advanced Placement or Performing Arts courses will be exempt from end of
year final exams. Their final course grade will be calculated using grades from quarters 1, 2, 3 and the midterm exam.
