ADAM SELMAN
Music Supervision: Paul Devro
“My mix was done by the amazing Paul Devro. It’s about an hour and a
half long, consisting of mostly old Bollywood disco songs. The creative brief
for the collection is: ‘A hiker finds a box of jewels worth over $200,000
in the French Alps believed to be from remains of the “Malabar Princess,”
an ill-fated plane crash that happened in 1950 carrying passengers from
Bombay to New York. Was the plane carrying a Maharani and her treasure?
Or simply a group of Indian sailors and workmen returning to their ship?
The mystery remains…’ ”

“This season I draw my inspiration from the classical European garden,
captured so perfectly in Francesco Guardi’s painting of ripe, verdant
blossoms, conveying both rococo richness and elegant refinement… This
collection is my most luxuriant, featuring sweeping opera coats, chic cocktail
frocks, and gowns that bring a sense of occasion… Textiles such as a rose gold
matelassé, topaz shadow-brocade and metallic gold poppies glum against
ruby and turquoise silk. Lush pink peonies bloom on glowing platinum lamé
and abstract pansy designs cluster on amethyst and turquoise jacquard…
On display at the Leila Heler Gallery, Murat Pulat’s brightly colored
contemporary oils of Hitchcock heroines and new wave ingenues provide
the perfect backdrop for the collection. I always imagine that my styles are
timeless, and, like the paintings, interpret the past for the present day.”

NYC: 73-78,
Philip Glass & Beck
“The main track for the show was NYC: 73-78 from the Album Re:Work,
remixes by Philip Glass. This particular remix was done by Beck and was
further customized for the presentation by the talented Nicolas Leau and
Elodie Tacenet. The music perfectly underscored the main ideas of time
standing still and capturing fleeting moments in time.
Philip Glass’ repetition really enveloped this frantic feeling of traveling in
and out of memories and the addition of synthetic sounds played to the
notion of futurism.”

HIGHLAND
Music Supervision: Lee Pender
The Sound Design Was Composed of:
- Helicopter sounds, both synthesized and recorded. - A live ATC recording of a cessna pilot.
- Short snippets from Werner Herzog’s film, “Encounters At The End Of The World”
- A recording of a right whale, from an album called “Deep Voices”,
(the sequel to Frank Watlington’s “Songs Of The Humpback Whale”)
“Lizzie and I share a love for all things oceanic--we tend to gravitate to the sea in one way or another. I think
we’re both a bit classical, in that we’re inspired directly by nature. Memetics tends to be the catalyst for paradigmshifts in fashion, but nature is the original source of all inspiration. You’ll never see something on the internet
that is as beautiful as the actual sky.
This season was influenced in a large way by 70s/80s/90s environmentalism (i.e. the “Save The Whales”
movement), climate change, Greenpeace, glaciers, the arctic. Lizzie and I watched Werner Herzog’s film
“encounters from the end of the world” together multiple times. We were both inspired by the feeling of the movie
and of the stark white tundra. I wanted the sound to exude the literal and figurative coldness of a the arctic, the
unmoving gargantuan beauty of a glacier. Frank Watlington was a military engineer, specializing in underwater
recordings and living in Bermuda. In the 1960s, Watlington inadvertently stumbled onto humpback whales
in the midst of their migratory mating patterns. He made a series of recordings, the first of their kind, which
he later made into an album. This album “Songs Of The Humpback Whales” went on to inspire the “Save The
Whales” movement, so using them in the sound was a subtle reference back to one of the inspirations for the
collection. My initial thought was to introduce a Gregorian ambiance, a feeling of giant, echoing, classical beauty
underneath the whale songs. Early-drafts of the sound included human-whale duets. We realized quickly,
however, that even a hint of “melody” or “harmony” gave it a sentimentality that was unacceptable, and we
stripped out all traces of human musicality. The human-whale duet became manifest through the blending
of the above-water and the below-water: the helicopters and the whale songs. The result was undigestible,
challenging. Putting the sound on in the dressing room tended to elevate blood-pressures, which i thought was
perfect. It had to be as sober, unsmiling and unsentimental as Herzog, who calls yoga an “abomination,” who
says “I believe the common denominator of the universe is not harmony, but chaos, hostility and murder.” A presentation is like a movie where nothing happens. The absence of a narrative or dialogue introduces a
vagueness to the scene, which provokes the viewer to use his or her imagination. Character development must
be achieved purely through casting, wardrobe, styling, set design, and sound design. My objective with the
sound design was to complement the rest of the elements in a way that stimulated imagineering on the part of
the viewer. When I looked around at the models, I didn’t want to see a bunch of fashion models. I wanted to
see a crew of brave explorers, set out on an strange and perilous arctic research expedition. These men would be
endowed with a thoughtfulness and a sense of duty to their fellow creatures, human and animal alike, which
made them sober and serious, but with souls as enormous as glaciers.”

fluid fashions of this era perfectly with songs from
Roxy Music and Jimi Hendrix.

Spell - Rosemary’s Baby (Lullaby Pt.1)
Les Invalides - Au Revoir
Jagdstaffel 66 - Nachbrenner
Survive - Omniverse
Fishermen - Ribbonfish
“Spell’s Rosemary’s Baby has an ethereal, haunted sound which reminded me
of exactly what I was looking for to create an atmosphere for people walking
around in an abandoned amusement park (the primary inspiration for
the FW14 collection, titled “Wonderworld”). I love Rose Mcdowall’s voice
and her singing a lullaby sounded like a perfect fit for the initial walk.
For here, the sound speeds up a bit and we closed the show a techno track
by Fishermen which made the atmosphere move into a more traditional
runway setting, upbeat and a strong finish.”
-Katie Gallagher

Mylo - In My Arms (Radio Edit)
“Music is the most important element of a show after the clothes, music
can transform dull clothing into something more exciting and turn exciting
clothing into a somber mess. I always give our musical choices great
consideration, and take a great deal of time pairing the music to my emotion
of the show. It is really such an emotional thing. I always love the idea of
choosing something very upbeat for the finale, in that I like to have people
leave the show feeling more upbeat and excited than they were coming in.”
- Johnson Hartig

The tracks made for the Mark and Estel FW 14 collection, available as the
“Old World EP”, were made in conjunction with the collection by Mark
and Estel, the music & fashion duo. The music reflects the collection not only
literally (such as in the track “Pretty Things” describing “gold & diamond
rings”), but the songs also emulate the woman the collection was designed
for, the bold woman who is not afraid of taking risks. The title track
“Forward to the Old World” embodies the inspiration behind the collection
which was the Victorian Era & always Mark and Estel’s signature, Rock N’
Roll.
