NEW YORK FASHION WEEK FALL / WINTER 2014 MUSIC TREND REPORT Welcome to our MUSIC TREND REPORT for NYFW F/W2014. We reached out to all of the designers and brands who participated in New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2014. We asked everyone to share the tracks used for each collection, for the purpose of compiling a precise report on the music used for the season. We were presented with a cohesive look at the future-state of fashion as told through soundtracks. Please enjoy and share this report! 1 ADAM SELMAN Music Supervision: Paul Devro “My mix was done by the amazing Paul Devro. It’s about an hour and a half long, consisting of mostly old Bollywood disco songs. The creative brief for the collection is: ‘A hiker finds a box of jewels worth over $200,000 in the French Alps believed to be from remains of the “Malabar Princess,” an ill-fated plane crash that happened in 1950 carrying passengers from Bombay to New York. Was the plane carrying a Maharani and her treasure? Or simply a group of Indian sailors and workmen returning to their ship? The mystery remains…’ ” -Adam Selman ALEXANDRE HERCHCOVITCH Music Supervision: Max Blum Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Neufeld Neufeld Neufeld Neufeld - Hero Brother Wrong Thought Sprinter Fire Forcelessness ALON LIVNÉ Jacuzzi - Exodus Jacuzzi - Tundra Jacuzzi - Luxury Jacuzzi - Loose Ends Jacuzzi - Curtain Call Alon Livné opted for the bass heavy Mizu EP by Jacuzzi for his moody playlist used for his FW14 presentation at The Hub/Lincoln Center. 2 ALTUZARRA Music Supervision: Sébastian Perrin The Temptations - Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone Venus In Furs - Baby’s On Fire ARAKS Music Supervision: Roman Grandinetti Sparklehorse - It’s A Wonderful Life Lo-Fang - #88 Haim - Go Slow Nonono - Like The Wind Only You - Delilah Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde Bonobo - Days To Come High Places - On Giving Up Local Natives - Breakers Sky Ferreira - Everything Is Embarrassing BADGLEY MISCHKA Music Supervision: Javier Peral Arcade Fire - Mirror Max Cooper & Tom Hodge - Quantet Machinedrum - U Still Lie The Hidden Cameras - Bread For Brat Arcade Fire - We Exist 3 BARBARA TFANK Music Supervision: Adesh Deosaran and Lara Wiesenthal for Activaire Snakehips - On & On Metronomy - I’m Aquarius The Step Kids - Sweet Salvation Toro Y Moi - Campo Oh Land - First To Say Goodnight Danton Eeprom - Biscotto & Chimpanzee (Feat. Lush pink peonies bloom on glowing platinum lamé and abstract pansy designs cluster on amethyst and turquoise jacquard… On display at the Leila Heler Gallery, Murat Pulat’s brightly colored contemporary oils of Hitchcock heroines and new wave ingenues provide the perfect backdrop for the collection. I always imagine that my styles are timeless, and, like the paintings, interpret the past for the present day.” - Barbara Tfank 4 BIBHU MOHAPATRA Music Supervision: Javier Peral James vincent mcmorrow - Post Tropical Henrik Schwarz - Balletsuite #1/ Masse Machinedrum - Rise n Fall BRANDON SUN Music Supervision: Mike Banat Nirvana - Come As You Are Fugees - Ready Or Not Fugees - Fu-Gee-La “Music is a time portal. This particular remix was done by Beck and was further customized for the presentation by the talented Nicolas Leau and Elodie Tacenet. The music perfectly underscored the main ideas of time standing still and capturing fleeting moments in time. Philip Glass’ repetition really enveloped this frantic feeling of traveling in and out of memories and the addition of synthetic sounds played to the notion of futurism.” CHRISTIAN SIRIANO Music Superivision: Brad Walsh Brad Walsh - Makeover Miss Kittin - Kiss Factory Miss Kittin - Happy Violentine 6 COACH Music Supervision: Steve Mackey Alexandre Desplat - Camera Obscura Alexandre Desplat - By The Canal With Pieter Angelo Badalamenti - Fred’s World Nils Frahm - Tristana/ Ambre/ Unter Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - One Particular Moment Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald - Intro Model Moment: David Lynch / Lykke Li - I’m Waiting Here COSTELLO TAGLIAPIETRA Music Supervision: Geordon Nicol and Leigh Lezark (The Misshapes) Miss Kittin - Bassline Gesaffelstein - Hate And Glory Moderat - Therapy Trust - Capitol CYNTHIA ROWLEY Music Supervision: Marisa Witkin Bosco Del Rey - Space Junky Stereo Total - I Love You, Ono Django Django - Wor Michael Jackson - We’ve Got A Good Thing Going (Hf & K.U.D.O. For this season it was about bad girls that are edgy and sophisticated. I believe this music is quite like this.” -Henri Scars Struck 9 HIGHLAND Music Supervision: Lee Pender The Sound Design Was Composed of: - Helicopter sounds, both synthesized and recorded. - A live ATC recording of a cessna pilot. - Short snippets from Werner Herzog’s film, “Encounters At The End Of The World” - A recording of a right whale, from an album called “Deep Voices”, (the sequel to Frank Watlington’s “Songs Of The Humpback Whale”) “Lizzie and I share a love for all things oceanic--we tend to gravitate to the sea in one way or another. I think we’re both a bit classical, in that we’re inspired directly by nature. Memetics tends to be the catalyst for paradigmshifts in fashion, but nature is the original source of all inspiration. You’ll never see something on the internet that is as beautiful as the actual sky. This season was influenced in a large way by 70s/80s/90s environmentalism (i.e. the “Save The Whales” movement), climate change, Greenpeace, glaciers, the arctic. Lizzie and I watched Werner Herzog’s film “encounters from the end of the world” together multiple times. We were both inspired by the feeling of the movie and of the stark white tundra. I wanted the sound to exude the literal and figurative coldness of a the arctic, the unmoving gargantuan beauty of a glacier. Frank Watlington was a military engineer, specializing in underwater recordings and living in Bermuda. In the 1960s, Watlington inadvertently stumbled onto humpback whales in the midst of their migratory mating patterns. He made a series of recordings, the first of their kind, which he later made into an album. This album “Songs Of The Humpback Whales” went on to inspire the “Save The Whales” movement, so using them in the sound was a subtle reference back to one of the inspirations for the collection. My initial thought was to introduce a Gregorian ambiance, a feeling of giant, echoing, classical beauty underneath the whale songs. Early-drafts of the sound included human-whale duets. We realized quickly, however, that even a hint of “melody” or “harmony” gave it a sentimentality that was unacceptable, and we stripped out all traces of human musicality. The human-whale duet became manifest through the blending of the above-water and the below-water: the helicopters and the whale songs. The result was undigestible, challenging. Putting the sound on in the dressing room tended to elevate blood-pressures, which i thought was perfect. It had to be as sober, unsmiling and unsentimental as Herzog, who calls yoga an “abomination,” who says “I believe the common denominator of the universe is not harmony, but chaos, hostility and murder.” A presentation is like a movie where nothing happens. The absence of a narrative or dialogue introduces a vagueness to the scene, which provokes the viewer to use his or her imagination. Character development must be achieved purely through casting, wardrobe, styling, set design, and sound design. My objective with the sound design was to complement the rest of the elements in a way that stimulated imagineering on the part of the viewer. When I looked around at the models, I didn’t want to see a bunch of fashion models. I wanted to see a crew of brave explorers, set out on an strange and perilous arctic research expedition. These men would be endowed with a thoughtfulness and a sense of duty to their fellow creatures, human and animal alike, which made them sober and serious, but with souls as enormous as glaciers.” - Lee Pender 10 JASON WU Music Supervision: Javier Peral S O H N- Lessons S O H N- Lessons (Instrumental) Nils Frahm: Hammers Guy Chambers & Sophie Hunter: Les Fleurs Du Mal Max Cooper & Tom Hodge: Amorphous Romance JENNY PACKHAM Music Supervision: Sean Canning Rufus Wainwright - Oh What A World Roxy Music - Beauty Queen Psychedelic Furs - Sister Europe Connan Mockasin - I’m The Man… Jimi Hendrix - Third Stone From The Sun Goldfrapp - Strict Machine Lana Del Ray - Blue Velvet This season the show was inspired by a 1970’s Bianca Jagger who epitomised the ease and opulence of eveningwear at that time. The music echoes the fluid fashions of this era perfectly with songs from Roxy Music and Jimi Hendrix. KATIE GALLAGHER Music Supervision: Katie Gallagher Spell - Rosemary’s Baby (Lullaby Pt.1) Les Invalides - Au Revoir Jagdstaffel 66 - Nachbrenner Survive - Omniverse Fishermen - Ribbonfish “Spell’s Rosemary’s Baby has an ethereal, haunted sound which reminded me of exactly what I was looking for to create an atmosphere for people walking around in an abandoned amusement park (the primary inspiration for the FW14 collection, titled “Wonderworld”). I love Rose Mcdowall’s voice and her singing a lullaby sounded like a perfect fit for the initial walk. For here, the sound speeds up a bit and we closed the show a techno track by Fishermen which made the atmosphere move into a more traditional runway setting, upbeat and a strong finish.” -Katie Gallagher 12 KENNETH COLE Music Supervision: Javier Peral David Bowie - Love Is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix By James Murphy For The DFA) Dawn Of Midi - Dysnomia Django Django - Skies Over Cairo Django Django - Silver Rays Henrik Schwarz - Balleysuite #1 - Masse (I Am Not Responsible For That) White Magic - The Gypsies Came Marching After (Pocketknife Remix) Foals - Milk And Black Spiders The influences were world travel a mix of the transience, gypsy living and urban warrior. I always give our musical choices great consideration, and take a great deal of time pairing the music to my emotion of the show. It is really such an emotional thing. I always love the idea of choosing something very upbeat for the finale, in that I like to have people leave the show feeling more upbeat and excited than they were coming in.” - Johnson Hartig 13 LIE SANG BONG Music Supervision: Sébastien Perrin Ladytron - Aces High (Ladytron Remix) Schneider TM - Elefantenhaut ASC - Stolen Memories 909 - Bedouin Dance Coeur De Pirate - You Know I’m No Good Keywords: Beat, Energy, Modern, Fresh MARCHESA Music Supervision: Sébastien Perrin Max Richter - Citizen Gangster “Track 17” London Grammar - Nightcall (Lg Re-Edit) The Piano Guys - Carol Of The Bells / God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen MARK AND ESTEL Music Supervision: Mark Tango And Estel Day Mark and Estel - Forward to the Old World Mark and Estel - Luvin U Mark and Estel - Crystal Mark and Estel - Pretty Things Mark and Estel - Old World Thoughts The tracks made for the Mark and Estel FW 14 collection, available as the “Old World EP”, were made in conjunction with the collection by Mark and Estel, the music & fashion duo. The music reflects the collection not only literally (such as in the track “Pretty Things” describing “gold & diamond rings”), but the songs also emulate the woman the collection was designed for, the bold woman who is not afraid of taking risks. The title track “Forward to the Old World” embodies the inspiration behind the collection which was the Victorian Era & always Mark and Estel’s signature, Rock N’ Roll. 14 MATHIEU MIRRANO Music Supervision: Mimi Xu Jacuzzi - Exodus Gesaffelstein - Nameless Gesaffelstein - Pursuit MONIQUE LHUILLIER Music Supervision: Javier Peral Alexandre Desplat - The Rendez-Vous (From Birth Original Movie Soundtrack) Conforce - Spatiotemporal Philip Glass - In The Upper Room: Dance Ii Fka Twigs - Water Me (Dj Dj Booth Remix) Conforce - Excess Mortality Alexandre Desplat - Driving In Geneve (From Syriana Original Movie Soundtrack) NARCISO RODRIGUEZ Music Supervision: Frederic Sanchez Logos - Menace Rabit - Wolf Spider (Epoch Soundboy Demolition Mix) Inner City - Do Ya (Karl Craig Remix) Shifted - Pulse Incomplete NONOO Music Supervision: Kris Bones Phantogram - Fall In Love Desire - Under Your Spell, French Horn Rebellion & Savoir Adore - The Fire Prince Innocence - Golden Hour Finale: Bastille - Of The Night “I really wanted the music to help enhance the idea of a modern woman in traditional surroundings. That is why there are classical undertones to most of the tracks that I selected. I ended the show with ‘Of the Night’ by Bastille because it is uplifting and our woman is someone who takes her work seriously but still has a sense of humor and fun.” - Misha Nonoo 15 NOON BY NOOR Music Supervision: Geordon Nicol and Leigh Lezark (The Misshapes) Blood Orange - On The Line (Star Slinger Remix) Major Lazer - You’re No Good (feat.
