Ethical Maturity in Supervision: The Impact of Shame and Compassion

Shaming is evident in many educational, family and social systems. Supervision has the potential to
continue this process or change it. Shame is an existential feeling that can become toxic and block
development. Recent findings from neuroscience have suggested that compassion can allow the
brain to restructure and develop. Over the past decade counselling, theology and neuroscience,
have begun to converge. This convergence encompasses the therapeutic relationship, compassion
and brain structure. Thus ethical maturity in supervision is about being aware of the developments
and using them in service with our supervisees to work ethically.
Karl Gregory is a counsellor, coach, trainer and supervisor. He has also
managed psychiatric services. Karl has a private practice as an integrative
counsellor and has recently co-founded Severn Talking Therapy as a
vehicle to run an annual supervision conference, a Diploma in Supervision
course and supervision workshops.
His other passions are his family life, music, cycling and gardening.
