This eye-opening book about four young
Latina women in Denver is an epic tale of
immigration, politics and the human story
at the heart of our heated debates.
The Summit draws theatre professionals
and audiences from across the country
who come to take part in the excitement of
encountering new plays. Won’t you join
us? We aspire to develop new American
works that will be produced across the
nation. If you’re in New York, Chicago or
Costa Mesa, CA, check for stagings of Sam
Hunter’s The Whale, which had its world
premiere at last February’s Summit.
This year we are featuring readings
of three plays by women, including
Catherine Trieschmann, Laura Eason and
the Zacarías adaptation. Our commitment
to women who write for the theatre is
made possible by the continued support
of the Women’s Voices Fund (WVF), an
endowment we created to support the work
of leading theatre artists who happen to be
women. With support from more than 130
individuals, WVF has acquired more than
$800,000, making it the largest endowment
dedicated to supporting women in theatre.
If you wish to contribute, go to: www.
denvercenter.org/wvf or call Mary Mosher
at 303.572.4594.
Also look for a reinvented touring
production of that chilling musical, Jekyll
& Hyde and a fresh DCTC staging of
Shakespeare’s greatest love story, Romeo
& Juliet, to complete a truly eclectic
program.
Thank you again for supporting and
attending all of our shows. n
At The Denver Center, we like to ring in
the New Year with new work—and many
innovative and new-to-you productions.
This January audiences are getting the
moving War Horse, with its astonishing
horse puppets, as three puppeteers make
each horse come alive before your eyes,
turning this touring production into magic.
Immediately following that, the Denver
Center Theatre Company (DCTC) goes
into high gear with its signature annual
new play program, the Colorado New Play
Summit. This is an intensive weekend of
public readings of five new plays, as well
as full productions of two world premieres
that were read at last year’s Summit. The
full stagings include: Ed, Downloaded,
showing us a time in the near future when
we may be able to download our memories,
and Grace, or The Art of Climbing, about a
woman who literally climbs her way out of
depression.
The new readings include an AfricanAmerican retelling of Homer’s Odyssey;
a failed Elvis impersonator turned
successful Drag Queen; an arts council
in Kansas struggling to decide on the
most deserving artists in their town; a
professional woman who struggles with
her unemployed husband’s refusal to look
for a job and, not least, playwright Karen Kent Thompson
Zacarías’ adaptation of Helen Thorpe’s

award-winning memoir, Just Like Us.

“We know we can fulfill

why we keep investing

dding value is more than just a mission statement for Vectra Bank. For this
long-time member of Colorado’s business community, Vectra continuously
strives to find new ways to develop and strengthen ties to each community
it serves. And sometimes that simply means continuing its commitment. As such,
we are pleased to have Vectra Bank return again as a presenting sponsor of Denver
Center Attractions.
“Denver is fortunate to have so many arts and cultural institutions to unite
communities, create economic opportunity and improve the quality of life,” said
Vectra Bank President and CEO Bruce Alexander. “We know we can fulfill
our mission and add value to our communities by supporting these vibrant
organizations, which is why we keep investing in The Denver Center for
Performing Arts. Its productions are inspiring, creative and magical, and we are all
blessed to have one of the best venues in the country right in our own community.”
Vectra also continues to do its part to drive the economy upward by lending to
individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits in communities across the state.
“I am proud of the contributions that our employees make every time they help
customers finance a home, start a college or retirement fund or grow a business,”
adds Alexander. “However, beyond products and services, they give back every day
by sponsoring events and organizations such as United Way, Junior Achievement,
Accion and many others. Vectra’s employees are leaders in their communities
by serving on boards of nonprofits, chambers and service organizations, and by
generously donating their money, time and talents.”
As part of Zions Bancorporation, Vectra has the reach and resources of many
larger competitors. But its approach to business is decidedly different. Whether
the customer is the manager of a growing Colorado company or an individual
consumer, both will find at Vectra Bank an innovative banking organization eager
to surpass their expectations. n

y becoming a Producing Partner, you can play a leading role in
helping support the Denver Center Theatre Company (DCTC)
productions. As a Producing Partner, you have the opportunity to be
involved at a deeper level with a production.
For the past five seasons, a small, but mighty consortium of donors has
burgeoned—donors who have combined their efforts as Producing Partners
to generously support the DCTC’s classic production by William Shakespeare. This year, their combined donation totals $35,000 in support of
Romeo & Juliet. The Denver Center wants to thank Sheri & Lee Archer,
Katy Atkinson, Isabelle Clark, Diana & Mike Kinsey, Dennis & Anita
Lacey, Alison & Jim Shetter and June Travis for their continued support
this season.
Recently, members of this group attended the first rehearsal for Romeo
& Juliet where Producing Artistic Director Kent Thompson discussed his
choice of this play, director Scott Wentworth talked about his perspectives
and approaches to the show, and set designer Michael Ganio, costume designer Christina Poddubiuk and lighting designer Peter West outlined their
concepts. The large cast then informally read the script for the first time.
The benefit of attending this first rehearsal is perhaps one of this group’s
favorites.
Support from generous individuals is the lifeblood for the continued
success of DCTC. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a
Producing Partner, which begins with a contribution of $5,000, please contact David Zupancic, Associate Director of Development, at 303.446.4811

Feb 26 – March 10, Buell Theatre
T
his high-flying, splashy new Broadway musical tells the story
of Frank W. Abagnale, Jr., a teenager who runs away from
home in search of the glamorous life. With nothing more than
his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged
checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer—living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when Frank’s
lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Carl chases Frank
to the end... and finds something he never expected. Don’t miss this
big-hearted musical adventure based on an astonishing real-life story of
being young, in love…and in deep, deep trouble. n
Mark Twain Tonight!
March 16 only, Buell Theatre
M
ore than 50 years ago, a young actor took the stage in a tiny offBroadway theatre and introduced the world to a man they’d never
forget. That actor was Hal Holbrook. The man was Mark Twain.
As Denver audiences know well, no one embodies Mark Twain like Hal
Holbrook. It is, quite simply, one of the most acclaimed and enduring solo
performances in the history of theatre. This evening is a living, breathing,
American masterpiece. Holbrook knows Twain as well as he knows himself,
bringing richness to the character far beyond the quoting of Twain’s most
memorable lines. n

Clash in the one-man show, A Weekend with Pablo Picasso
portrays the iconic artist and invites the audience in to watch
him work on a commission of six paintings—yes, live and on
stage. Set in 1957, when Picasso was at his height, we watch as the
artist ponders art, life, love and friendship. This uncommon show
is a gateway into getting to know the man himself—and maybe a
chance at getting to know your inner artist. n

Other Desert Cities

H
olidays can often be a pressure cooker for family drama, and
that is the case for the Wyeths of Other Desert Cities. This
hyper-articulate family is filled with vivid characters who are
equally as good at bringing joy to one another, as they are at inflicting
pain. Their Christmas reaches a dramatic pinnacle when daughter
Brooke shares her soon-to-be-published manuscript, which exposes a
tragic family secret and reopens wounds that have never fully healed.
Written by Jon Robin Baitz, this once-off-Broadway play had its
premiere at New York’s Lincoln Center in January of 2011. It was
a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received five
Tony nominations, including Best Play. Other Desert Cities is full
of razor-sharp wit, not to be missed by Denver audiences. n

ne of the most epic and tragic romances to ever hit
the stage, Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is always a
stunning visual display of period costume.
Frequently set in The Renaissance, The Denver Center
Theatre Company’s version will take place in Shakespeare’s
own, around 1600.
Costume designer, Christina Poddubiuk, whose firm carries the whimsical name of Punch and Judy, spent time in
Italy to gather ideas and research—a trip that enabled her
to look at what we think of as Elizabethan at that particular time in Italy. For example, women’s neck ruffs were
softer, where English women might wear a very large and
stiff ruff, but with extreme décolletage. All details will be
intricately considered and applied.
The world of the Montagues and Capulets will be somber
in color, allowing the story to take center stage. Romeo &
Juliet is a play of strong passion and emotion, but director
Scott Wentworth hopes his staging also will demonstrate
how the culture of the time affects the outcome of the story.
It plays January 25 through February 24 in The Stage. n

he Denver-based law firm of Welborn Sullivan Meck & Tooley, P.C. is delighted
to be a sponsor of The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) and the
2012/13 Directors Society. Like many DCPA productions throughout the year,
Welborn Sullivan is a home to diversity with a wide-ranging practice showcasing some of
the best legal talent in the Rocky Mountain region specializing in natural resources.
Although members of the firm are more commonly found in the courtroom or the board
room, Welborn Sullivan has long been committed to the community. During 2012, for
example, firm members volunteered to serve as “Weed Warriors” for a native garden
project with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, and the firm also was pleased to sponsor
many individuals and their efforts on the project.
The firm has supported a variety of community health and service efforts including the
Annual Men For The Cure Dinner in support of breast cancer research and outreach, the
Denver Scholarship Foundation and its assistance to Denver Public High School students,
the Denim & Diamond Charity Ball and Silent Auction benefiting the Denver Museum
of Nature & Science, Freedom Service Dogs and the Heart and Hand Center, and the
Annual Trap Shoot/Sporting Clay Event benefiting the Denver Association of Petroleum
Landmen’s General Scholarship Fund.
Being a sponsor for the DCPA is a perfect fit for Welborn Sullivan. Members of the
firm are not only long-time subscribers of DCPA productions, but the firm has a great
appreciation for the DCPA’s Arts in Education program, which provides Colorado students
with a rich exposure to the arts in a way that inspires their future interests and endeavors.
Welborn Sullivan attorneys have been similarly inspired by experience and education,
which is reflected in their leadership. In solving problems fairly and creatively, firm
attorneys apply their knowledge of the law along with their extensive experience as
geologists, engineers, landmen, general counsel for multinational corporations, Peace
Corps workers advising emerging nations on environmental policies, military officers,
district attorneys, federal prosecutors, state and federal trial lawyers, mayors, city council
members, as well as executive and legal service in the U.S. Departments of Interior and
Energy.
The firm looks forward to continuing its partnership with the DCPA. n
