At Children’s of Alabama bubbles are not just bubbles—they are a fun way to promote breathing
exercises for our patients with respiratory issues. Wii games are not just for fun, they encourage a
patient who is recovering from surgery to get up and move around. Play Doh is more than clay—it’s a
tool for development of fine motor skills.
Each year Children’s of Alabama has more than 14,000 inpatient visits by children from across Alabama.
The average length of a patient’s stay is five days. While patients are at Children’s, our dedicated staff
works to help them cope with the stress of uncertainty of their hospitalization by providing support and
distraction, promoting family-centered care and encouraging a sense of fun in spite of challenging
circumstances—often through play like arts and crafts and video games.
The majority of the materials and toys that our staff use for these activities have been donated by the
community. If you are interested in supporting the patients and families at Children’s of Alabama
through a donation of toys and other items, please review the following guidelines
To help ensure the safety of our patients, all donations are inspected prior to distribution to our
patients. Please keep the following in mind when preparing your donation:
All donated items (including stuffed animals) must be:
o new, in its original packaging and unwrapped
o politically and religiously neutral
Due to various dietary restrictions we cannot accept candy, gum or food
We cannot accept items that depict violence, including guns and swords
We cannot accept yoyo’s, jump ropes, paddle boards with string and ball attached or toys made
of latex
Clothing items are needed in all sizes infant through adult
Infant/Toddler items and Teen items are always the most urgently needed
Because our patients are acutely ill, it is not possible to deliver gifts directly to the children.
Items not meeting our guidelines will be donated to various local charities.
All donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 6am-9:30pm and on holidays and
weekends from 8am-9:30pm in the Children’s of Alabama lobby at 1600 7th Ave. South in Birmingham.
