ACED Program Information
Fees— The fee is $6 per class, $12.00 for two classes and $18.00 for 3 classes
Fees include all 6 weeks of classes

Registration
You must be at least 16 years of age and a Jackson County resident to participate. Preregistration is required. Walk-in registrations will not be accepted. All stu dent paper w or k m u st be com pleted befor e stu dent w ill be allow ed to attend
classes. Sign up
immediately upon receiving your brochure; first come, first served. Classes fill up quickly.
Please Read Carefully!
Classes marked with an asterisk (*) indicate classes offered on the Graceland University campus. Please take a look at your calendar, as we expect each student to attend 5 out of 6 class days. If this is not possible, please choose a different campus. Please return
all
registration forms to the UMKC campus. Minimum enrollment is required to offer a class. You may enroll online and send your
check or money order by mail as soon as you register. Please mail to the address on the registration card.
Refund Policy
If you withdraw from classes one week before classes begin, credit will be given for the next semester. To withdraw from a class,
please call UMKC at 816-235-1754. No cash refunds are possible.
Certificate of Completion
A certificate of completion will be given to students who complete 5 of the 6 Saturdays. Special recognition will be given for perfect
attendance.
Attendance
It is your responsibility to come to class and be on time. If you arrive more than 15 minutes after the start of class, you may be seated in the hall, and will not be admitted to class.
New Students
If you have never attended ACED classes, return the registration form with your fees to the UMKC campus and call the ACED office
to schedule an interview. ALL interviews must be conducted and student paperwork completed before the first day of class.
Returning Students
If you have attended ACED classes, return the registration form with your fees to UMKC.
Weather
If classes are cancelled due to inclement weather, a recorded message will be on the voice mail at UMKC at 816-235-1754. Please
call after 7 a.m. on the day of the class to confirm the status of your classes.

What is ACED?
Adult Continuing Education for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (ACED) offers adults the
opportunity to attend non-credit classes in an educational and social environment. The ACED
program is designed to teach independent living skills and provide life-enhancing experiences. ACED is
offered by the UMKC Institute for Human Development, a University Center for Excellence in
Developmental Disabilities, Avila University and Graceland University,
with funding from the Developmental Disability Services of Jackson County-EITAS.
Classes are held on Saturday mornings.
Avila University classes will be held on the Avila campus, 11901 Wornall Rd., Kansas City.
January 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20, 27.
UMKC classes will be held on the UMKC Volker campus, 800 E. 52nd Street, Kansas City.
March 5, 12, 19, April 2, 9, 16.
Graceland University classes will be held on the Graceland campus 1401 W. Truman Rd., Independence. March 5, 12, 19, April 2, 9, 16.

taste-test some of our menu ideas and go home with a handful

You are in a crowded mall and suddenly, you feel the urge
to...dance! Learn eye-catching, easy, fun dance moves that
you can use the next time you hear the music.
*Royalty—the Scoop
Would you enjoy being a prince or a princess for a day?
Believe it or not, there’s more to royalty than just dressing up
in fancy clothes, attending fancy parties, and wearing a crown.
Get the real scoop through fun activities and stop in for a
“spot” of tea with the queen.
*Anything but a Brush
Is it possible to paint without brushes? How about fork fireworks, dish brush dandelions, stomp painting, marbled fish,
and punched tin. You will also explore how to use Pinterest to
find other ideas or possibly share your own artistic talents.
Teacher for a Day!
For just one day, be the teacher! Or maybe you would like to
be the Mayor or even the President! Your teacher will
become one of the students in the class while you create and
teach a lesson plan! Do you think you can do it?
Organ Donation
How DOES the heart work? What IS the largest organ in your
body? Science is eye-opening if you are really interested in
learning something new. Be amazed and surprised at all the
interesting facts about our human body!
Bossa Nova Breeze
Rio De Janeiro is famous for its laid-back beach culture, its
breathtaking landscape, its annual carnival, and now – the
2016 Summer Olympics. While exploring this fabulous city in
Brazil, make your own masks for Carnival and learn how to
dance the Samba!

coloring. We will work on pencil sketching, shading,
creative coloring, and much more. Come join us and learn
the latest in this trendy new art hobby.
*Catching Enough ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ’s
Establish a bedtime routine through a personalized checklist
and relaxing activity. Will it be a fruit facial, soft music, a
warm shower, or simply slipping into the coziest bathrobe
ever? Create natural products for pampering yourself or
choose a great book to help you get some much needed rest.
Moviemaker
Let’s make movies! We will create a music video, a public
service announcement, a commercial, newscast, documentary, or maybe a scene from a horror movie! Learn how to
“storyboard” ideas, choose music, and write scripts.
Zingity
Noah Wilson, age 10, left a legacy of kindness in the form of
an app. Zingity offers 120 activity packets which promote
fun activities, teach responsibility, and encourage
volunteerism. Will it be “Coffee Break”, “Contact a Hero”, or
“Lights, Camera, Action”?
“100”
How big a jar do you need for 100 jelly beans? How does it
feel to be 100? One hundred years ago today, what
happened in history? How often do we use the number 100?
Practice math, learn fun facts about the number 100,
prepare 100 calorie snacks and more.

DaVinci was born in 1452, a long time ago, and yet, he was about the coolest guy to ever live! He was an artist and an inventor.
He is credited with the invention of the parachute, helicopter and tank. He painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Study
his life and then create your own artistic works. We will enjoy a field trip to Union Station to see the DaVinci exhibit!
*Puzzlemania
Do you enjoy having a puzzle out on the table at all times? Do you buy books of mazes and word searches when you travel? We
will work on puzzles and mazes every Saturday. A field trip to the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum to wander the life-size maze on
the lawn is planned!
*It’s a Wrap
Looking for that perfect gift? A handmade gift will be appreciated more than something from a store. You can create your own
greeting card and wrapping paper to go with your gift! We will visit a gift store for inspiration for our next gift-giving occasion.
*Gardening
in a Jar?
Do you really need dirt to grow carrots and peas? Today, there are no rules to gardening. Let’s look at new and unique ways to
grow vegetables and herbs! You will go home with a garden in a jar.
Route 66—The Highway to the Ocean
Route 66. Just the name is magic. It has forever meant “going somewhere”. It started in Chicago and stretched across more
than 2400 miles, three time zones and eight states before it came to an end at the Pacific Ocean. It has been an inspiration for
literature, music, drama, art, and a nation of dreamers. Come experience the magic of road travel as we take an imaginary trip
with maps, images, and some fun travel art.
Fit Bingo
Walk, talk, stroll, roll, with friends. Complete steps each Saturday and earn tokens for Bingo. Winning a Bingo game will
allow your name to be entered into a drawing for nifty prizes.
Fufu
African people say they don’t feel full unless they’ve had their “fufu”. Prepare “fufu” and a wide range of African dishes from a
healthy West African ginger drink to Moroccan couscous to African style barbeque. We may even eat at an Ethiopian
restaurant.
