Warner Pacific College NAME: ____________________________________________________ DATE: ______________ PARTNERS: _________________________________________________________________________________ MAMMALIAN ORGAN SYSTEMS In this, our final lab of the semester, we will review the major structures and corresponding functions of the organ systems that we have studied. This will include components of the following systems: 1) 2) 3) 4) Nervous Endocrine Integument Skeletal 5) 6) 7) 8) Muscular Cardiovascular Lymphatic Respiratory 9) Digestive 10) Urinary 11) Reproductive To facilitate this process, we will make use of both models and dissection procedures. I. HUMAN ORGAN SYSTEMS Using the human torso model, identify the organs listed below by model number, the body system (or systems) they are part of and their primary functions. This will help you familiarize yourself with the components of these organ systems prior to identifying the "real" organs in the dissection exercise. Organ Model # System Primary Function(s) brain spinal cord heart trachea larynx lungs diaphragm esophagus BIO 102 – Mammalian Organ Systems 1 Warner Pacific College Organ Model # System Primary Function(s) stomach small intestine large intestine liver gallbladder pancreas thyroid gland adrenal glands kidneys ureters urinary bladder spleen testes ovaries uterus BIO 102 – Mammalian Organ Systems 2 Warner Pacific College II. FETAL PIG DISSECTION Based on the identification and orientation activities associated with the previous exercise, we will now use preserved mammals (fetal pigs) to observe a more “true to life” association of these organs and tissues within the body. Use the handout provided and the directions given to begin the dissection. Once you locate the organs indicated below, your instructor will sign off for confirmation. A. Organs of the Abdominopelvic Cavity 1. Digestive System _____ stomach _____ small intestine _____ duodenum B. Organs of the Thoracic Cavity 1. Circulatory System _____ heart _____ left atrium _____ left ventricle _____ large intestine (spiral colon) _____ right atrium _____ liver _____ right ventricle _____ gallbladder 2. Urinary System _____ kidneys _____ ureters _____ urinary bladder _____ aorta _____ pulmonary artery _____ vena cava 2. Respiratory System _____ larynx* 3. Lymphatic System _____ spleen _____ trachea* 4. Endocrine System _____ adrenal glands _____ diaphragm _____ pancreas 5. Reproductive System _____ testes / ovaries BIO 102 – Mammalian Organ Systems _____ lungs 3. Endocrine System _____ thyroid gland* *associated with or located near the thoracic cavity 3
