 Senior School Curriculum Group 1: English Grade 9 English (ENG092) 1.0 credit This course emphasizes the further development of reading, writing, thinking and oral communication skills in preparation for a dynamic experience in the Senior School. Students will study and interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, including plays, poems, short stories, and novels. An important focus will be the correct and effective use of spoken and written language in a broad range of venues: essays, discussions, debates, creative writing, group projects, recitations, and presentations. As well, the fundamental skills required for active reading and listening will be emphasized. Students require a credit in Grade 8 English (or equivalent) to register for this course. Grade 10 English (ENG102) 1.0 credit This course exposes students to a wide range of significant literary texts in the four major genres and thereby challenges them to become more active readers and better critical thinkers. Through writing critical responses to literature, fictional narratives, poetry, reflective compositions, research essays, reports and presentations, students will refine the fundamentals of effective writing. They will also be encouraged to interact effectively in debates, presentations and other formal and informal opportunities to hone their skills at speaking publicly and listening thoughtfully. Students require a credit in Grade 9 English (or equivalent) to register for this course. Grade 11 IB English SL (ENG112) 1.0 credit This course, as an IB Standard Level English program, is comprised of two major units, School's Free Choice and World Literature, in which a total of six major works are studied in depth. Grading in this course is based on both internal assessments by RNS and external assessments by the IB organization (the Individual Oral Presentation and the World Literature Paper). The course expands students’ understanding of literature from outside this continent, historical and contemporary approaches to writing, and further develops their reading, writing, oral communication and critical thinking skills. Students are prepared for the Grade 12 Standard Level English course, which completes their IB English experience. Students require a credit in Grade 10 English (or equivalent) to register for this course. Grade 11 IB English HL (ENG111) 1.0 credit This course, as year one of our IB Higher Level English program, is comprised of two major units, School's Free Choice and World Literature, in which a total of seven major works are studied in depth. Grading in this course is based on both internal assessments by RNS and external assessments by the IB organization (the Individual Oral Presentation and two independently conceived World Literature papers). The course expands students understanding of literature from outside of this continent, historical and contemporary approaches to writing, and further develops their reading, writing, oral communication and critical thinking skills. As a higher level course, the pace is brisk, the discussions are advanced and students are expected to demonstrate independence, inquisitiveness and effort at all times. Students are prepared for the Grade 12 Higher Level English course, which completes their IB English experience. Students require a credit in Grade 10 English (or equivalent) with a grade of at least 70%, as well as the approval of the Head of English, to register for this course. Grade 12 IB English SL (ENG122) 1.0 credit As the second year of our IB Standard Level English program, this course is comprised of two major units, Detailed Study and Group of Works, in which a total of five major works of literature are studied in depth, in accordance with the IB Language A1 guidelines. Grading in this course is based on both internal RNS assessments and external assessments by the IB organization (the Individual Oral Commentary and two examinations). Students are prepared to successfully complete the requirements for their IB Certificate in this subject. Students require a credit in Grade 11 English SL (or equivalent) to register for this course. Grade 12 IB English HL (ENG121) 1.0 credit As the second year of our IB Higher Level English program, this course is comprised of two major units, Detailed Study and Group of Works, in which a total of eight major pieces of literature are studied in depth, in accordance with the IB Language A1 guidelines. The pace of work and the level of analysis and discussion are generally high, as the second year demands detailed, sophisticated consideration of a range of works. Grading is rigorous and derived from both internal assessments by RNS and external assessments by the IB organization (the Individual Oral Commentary and two examinations). Students are prepared to successfully complete the requirements for their IB Certificate in this subject, and leave the course exceptionally well‐prepared for the university experience. Prerequisites include a credit in Grade 11 English HL (or equivalent) to register for this course, as well as approval of the Head of English.
