I hope you are enjoying your summer. I am writing to you because you registered to take AP US History in
the fall.
As is typical for many AP courses at Leesville, there is a summer assignment involved. Since I assume that
you have limited background in American history, I am asking you to read the first eight chapters of Robert
Remini’s A Short History of the United States. All told, that is about 244 pages in the edition that I have.
I have included pictures of the cover of the book to help you identify it. When you arrive at LRHS in the
fall I will assign a series of blackboard quizzes for you to earn extra points for the first quarter based on your
summer reading.
(Either of these is fine—in print or electronic)
In closing, as you find yourself reading Remini on the beach or at some other exotic summer locale, know
that I too am working and researching to improve my course for next year. I am looking forward to the
time we will spend together and the great things we will accomplish.
Sincerely,
Andy Hunt

The “Amsco” book
Many are also curious about a review text or test prep book for this class. The book I recommend is
entitled United States History:Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination. Technically it is
written by Newman and Schmalbach but many refer to it as the “Amsco” book for
the company that publishes it. Do NOT shop for it on Amazon unless you can find
it used. You can buy it direct from Amsco for about $18. Go to
http://www.amscopub.com for more information. You could also try Quail Ridge or
you local Barnes and Noble. Other review texts are fine. At this point, I would
suggest one with more outline than practice test. My second choice would be A.P.
US History All Access by Feldmeth, McDuffie, Piggrem, and Woodworth for about
$14 on Amazon (the “REA book”)
