SUMMER ASSIGNMENT
Here is the summer assignment; you are to complete BOTH parts over the summer and
be prepared on the first full day of school
I.
Text reading
Students are to read (and study!) Chapters 1-4 in American History (Brinkley text)
and be prepared for a comprehensive quiz on all four chapters on the first full day
of school. This will be a 70-question multiple-choice quiz.
II.
Essay
TOPIC: A HISTORICAL MYSTERY: WHAT HAPPENED AT ROANOKE? Colonization
promotional literature. Early travelers' reports on America. John White's drawings of
Native Americans. Accounts from the Roanoke Colony. Images of Sir Walter Raleigh
and Queen Elizabeth.
What does the selection present about the Roanoke Colony? What alternative theories
of the disappearance of the colony can be proposed? Which do you think is most
likely?

Friday of the first week of school, beginning of the class period
Format:




Standard formal essay style, 5 paragraph minimum, including Thesis Statement
and Concluding Statement.
Should include references to the Reader selection. Quotations are optional; if
you choose to quote, no quote should be longer than two lines.
Preferable form of reference will be a paraphrase.
All references, whether quoted or paraphrased, should be followed by a
parenthetical notation of the page number on which the information was found, in
this style: (13). Do not use the word “Page,” i.e., (Page 13) or the abbreviation
for “Page,” i.e., (P. 13)
