September 10, 2015 Dear 3, 4, & 5 Grade Parents: Each year our third through fifth grade students are assessed in both math and reading using the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment across the district. The MAP assessment is used to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth from year to year in the areas being assessed. This assessment provides us with an accurate basis for measuring the students’ academic growth. We also utilize the test as a means to prepare students for other state testing and to focus on testing strategies that will help make them comfortable and successful. This year the MAP test will once again align with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). In doing so, this will help us to address those areas in our curriculum that might need increased support in order to ensure our students’ needs are being met. Your child will participate in MAP testing (3) times during the school year. The first assessment window is set for September 14th through October 9th. Our second test window will be January 6th through January 29th and the third window is April 26th through May 20th. These assessments are given to our students so that we can evaluate their academic levels and measure their growth in reading and math throughout the year. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments are unique in that the tests adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. They are designed so that each student receives a test that is geared to his or her achievement level. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. Most importantly, the MAP assessments shows what individual students know and are able to do in the assessed areas, while also projecting a student’s targeted growth from the fall to spring. With the information from MAP testing, we will be able to differentiate instruction for your child and best meet his or her needs. We are truly excited to be able to have data that allows us to focus on every child’s individual growth and achievement. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, by telephone at 822-6224 or email at mdklawiter@pulaskischools.org.
