assessment and program review, by September 30, 2015. You may, but are not required to, submit a separate report for each program, including graduate degree
programs, which conducted assessment activities, or you may combine programs in a single report. Please identify your department/program in the file name for
your report.

Overview of Annual Assessment Project(s). On a separate sheet, provide a brief overview of this year’s assessment activities, including:
 an explanation for why your department chose the assessment activities (measurement, analysis, and/or application) that it enacted
 if your department implemented assessment option A, identify which program SLOs were assessed (please identify the SLOs in full), in which classes
and/or contexts, what assessment instruments were used and the methodology employed, the resulting scores, and the relation between this year’s
measure of student work and that of past years: (include as an appendix any and all relevant materials that you wish to include)
 if your department implemented assessment option B, identify what conclusions were drawn from the analysis of measured results, what changes to the
program were planned in response, and the relation between this year’s analyses and past and future assessment activities

Preview of planned assessment activities for next year. Include a brief description and explanation of how next year’s assessment will contribute to a
continuous program of ongoing assessment.

Overview of Annual Assessment Project:
The undergraduate Civil Engineering program had its external accreditation visit by ABET in Fall 2013. Since then, a continuous assessment plan was
established for the next six-year accreditation cycle. The assessment plan consists of three major activities: (1) course assessment, (2) Students Outcomes
assessment, and (3) Program Educational Objectives assessment. This year the courses assessed were CE308/L, CE335/L, CE340. CE315/L CE408/L, CE426/L
and CE438. The Student Outcomes assessed were:
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context
(i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
(j) a knowledge of contemporary issues
(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modem engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
(l) a proficiency in a minimum of four (4) recognized major civil engineering areas
(m) an ability to perform civil engineering design by means of design experiences integrated throughout the professional component of the curriculum
(n) an understanding of professional practice issues such as: procurement of work-, bidding versus quality based selection processes; how the design
professionals and the construction professions interact to construct a project; the importance of professional licensure and continuing education; and/or
other professional practice issues.
The assessment tools used to measure student work include:
 Scores on individual signature problems of homework assignments and/or exams
 Student performance on lab reports and team project presentations
 Student course evaluations
 Faculty self evaluations
The thresholds for each outcome and each course were identified and used as the indicators of student performance with respect to expected results.
At the end of Spring 2015, together with the outcomes assessed in 2013-2014, the outcomes were assessed one complete cycle. Based on the assessment results
the Student Outcomes rubric was modified.
Preview of planned assessment activities for next year:
The assessments of remaining courses will continue. By the end of Fall 2015, the courses will be assessed one complete cycle. The second-cycle assessments of
Student Outcomes and the assessments of Program Educational Objectives begin in Fall 2015.
The Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Management is striving to improve the student learning process, as well as the student understanding of
professional and ethical responsibilities.
