Bienvenue À La Classe De Français! Welcome To French Class! Dear 7th Grade Parents: Your son or daughter is starting an exciting semester learning French, the second most frequently taught language in the world after English. By learning French, the official language in 33 countries around the world, your child will be well on his or her way to acquiring a valuable asset for their future. My name is Madame Sloan. I want to introduce myself to you, and let you know what you should look forward to your children learning this year. I also want to invite you to look at your children as teachers. If you have them teach you what they learn from each class, not only will you be helping them hold on to what they have learned, but you will also start learning the language. If you have never studied French, you will begin to learn and if you have studied French before, you will be able to practice what you already know of the language with your child. These are some of the things your child will learn during the year: The French alphabet and sound system Basic greetings and courtesies Numbers and colors How to identify classroom objects How to identify parts of the body How to talk about the weather How to tell time How to express likes and dislikes How to order food Most importantly… How to have fun learning a second language! While learning French we will be learning about the culture, its art, its literature, and its music. French is the language of the future. Madame Sloan / Stout Middle School / 2013-2014 Page 1 Course Guidelines - 7th Grade – Semester Class Students are expected to be in class on time and fully prepared to participate. They are expected to bring their French notebook, and pen or pencil to class each day. It is their responsibility to turn in all assignments on time. Seventh graders will be using the same French book they use in ninth grade. They will actually be starting French I. Since it is a semester class, we will be covering the first three units only. This will give the students a wonderful head start especially if they continue on with their study of French in 8th grade. Indeed, you can earn ONE high school credit at Stout, in 8th grade French class, if you earn 70% or more on the final exam. How exciting! Students will be given an up-to-date status of their grade every Monday. STOUT’S GRADING SCALE: 20% of the grade is based on the Formative Assessments 80% of the grade is based on the Summative Assessments Using an assignment book or a planner will help keep track of deadlines, and will help students become successful. All assignments are to be completed and turned in as directed. With success in mind, students should always take pride in the work that they do. Messy or incomplete written work will not be accepted, and will have to be redone especially if a student did not completely master the intended content or skill. Be ready to learn, and have fun learning, everyday! Conduct Guidelines The following guidelines will be in effect in our classroom. They are based on the Dearborn Public School Core Values: Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, and courtesy. 1. I will treat you with respect so you will know how to treat me and your classmates. 2. Feel free to do anything that does not cause a problem for yourself or anyone else. Our goal is for a peaceful and productive semester. Following the rules, respecting classmates and teachers, and being willing to cooperate are things all students should work on to achieve this goal. Last but not least, I encourage you to visit my website by going on the Stout’s website and clicking on my name under “staff”. You will find valuable information on a variety of things. Most importantly, you will find, under my blog, which I update weekly, all the latest information about what is happening in class. I have read the Course and Homework Guidelines and I agree to abide by them. Student Signature: Madame Sloan / Stout Middle School / 2013-2014 Parent Signature: Page 2
