Description of Project: The RBA Group was responsible for the construction inspection of
this project, which included all quality control, contract administration, and coordination
between contractors, NYS Thruway Authority, NYSDOT, local municipalities, and Yonkers
Police Department. This high-profile emergency project was made necessary when a tanker
truck explosion destroyed the existing bridge. This unique project posed extraordinary
difficulties by requiring interpretation and enforcement of specifications to ensure quality
construction while expediting the work to enable completion in about half the normal time
and through a winter season.
The work involved structural concrete removal, extensive substructure rehabilitation, and
complete replacement of the superstructure utilizing inverset bridge deck panels. Traffic was
maintained during construction by using two temporary bridges. All work was governed by
the NYS Steel Construction Manual and NYSDOT standard specifications.
