Annual Report 2014
2014 was a very busy and eventful year for
MWMS. We hired a new Case and Outreach
Coordinator, Heidi Doyle, a wonderful addition to our fantastic Case and Training Coordinator for the past 8 years, Jan O’Keefe. Together, they have been coordinating our 30 dedicated and skillful mediators in small claims and
summary process sessions in the Framingham,
Natick, Marlborough and Concord District
Courts, as well as in our divorce and community mediation practice. MWMS was very fortunate to add two new Board members to its
existing remarkable Board of Directors: Judge
Robert Greco (Ret.) and Kristine Van Amsterdam. We are also thrilled about the 9 new mediators, all volunteers from the MetroWest
community, we added to our mediator roster.
MWMS was selected as one of the 4 organizations to provide mediation services for the
MassHousing Tenant Assistance Program.
Also, MWMS agreed to provide its
mediation services in 3 new types of cases
in court: Payment Reviews, Show Cause Hearings (minor criminal matters), and Harassment
Prevention Orders.
In 2014 MWMS staff and volunteers continued
to serve the MetroWest community by attending 440 small claims and summary process
sessions in the Natick, Framingham, Concord
and Marlboro District Courts, and reaching out
to more than 2,500 of MetroWest residents
by introducing the mediation process and opportunity to them.
MWMS mediators completed nearly 300 mediations (including small claims, eviction, community,
employment, family and divorce ). In total, more
than 800 of MetroWest residents and businesses participated in a safe and effective alternative to litigation, with more than 50% reaching an agreement. Furthermore, according to
feedback from judges and magistrates, in cases
where an agreement was not reached, the mediation process helped parties improve their presentation and focus of issues. which made it easier to
adjudicate these cases.
Comments from MWMS clients:
MWMS continued to participate in the Parent
Mediation Program by offering up to 6 hours of
free mediation for parents facing custody, visitation or parenting issues, earning MWMS
$6,300 in grant funds.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the
MWMS was an active participant in the Attorney
General’s Face to Face Consumer Mediation
Program, helping parties reach agreements in
mediation returning $327,411 to consumers.
Foundation For MetroWest
MWMS offered 6 training opportunities in
2014, including two mediation refresher courses
to mediators from the Massachusetts Association
of Realtors, three advanced trainings for MWMS
mediators, and one 35-hour basic mediation training. In early 2015, MWMS will offer advanced
training in summary process mediation and in divorce mediation, as well as a Conflict Resolution
Workshop for members of the Foundation for
MetroWest.
