BECOMING AN ACCREDITED MEDIATOR To qualify as a mediator you have to do the 5 day “IFM Basic course in mediation”. If you are not a mental health practitioner (psychologist or social worker) you will have to do the 2 day course “Psychology for lawyers and mediators”. If you are not in a legal profession, you will have to do the 2 day course “Law for psychologists and mediators”. Please be advised: Psychologists or social workers who have not worked with children, are advised to do the course “Psychology for mediators”. Lawyers who have not worked in family law or does not know family law in SA, are advised to attend the course in law. All our courses are accredited by Nabfam. At the Institute of Mediators we assist you to become an accredited mediator and also to obtain your ongoing CPD points. The process for accreditation is as follows: 1. Attend the Institute of Family Mediators 60 hour Basic Mediation course. 2. Attend the Law for Psychologists course. 3. Attend the Psychology for Lawyers course. 4. Complete the Portfolio of Evidence (POE) for each of these courses A POE is a body of work where you would have to meet specific theoretical and practical requirements which will aid you in your eventual work as a practicing accredited mediator. 5. You will then need to write and pass an exam. 6. In addition, you need 8 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. 7. You also are required to conduct 3 supervised mediation sessions.
