Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 1, 2012
Food for thought . . .
The readings for July 8, 2012
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I: Ezekiel 2:2-5
Reading II: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Gospel: Mark 6:1-6
These readings give us courage even though
they speak of failure and rejection because people resist God’s
word. Jesus’ own family, friends and townspeople turn him off.
Jesus returns home. A crowd comes to the synagogue to hear
him speak. Jesus appears ordinary, like one of them. But his
words are amazing. His own kinspeople and townspeople do not
have the faith of his followers. They do not see God’s Spirit at
work. Jesus, like Ezekiel and Paul, is distressed by the response
of those he has sent to save. But their rejection does not stop his
mission. Jesus cures the sick and moves on to teach others.
Question of the Week:
What keeps you going when you don’t feel support from others?
Welcome to St. Victoria
If you are visiting St. Victoria, welcome! If you would like
information on becoming a registered parishioner at
St. Victoria, please feel free to contact Julie Schmieg in the
parish office. She will be happy to line up an appointment
for you at one of our upcoming “Bien Venidos” registration
dates for new parishioners. (Bien Venidos means good
welcome.) You may reach Julie at jschmieg@stvictoria.org
or 443-2661 x201. (Please Note: If you are a guest at
St. Victoria and would like to make a contribution, you will
find “Welcome Envelopes” in the kiosk in the Franciscan
Commons. Thank you.)

Baptism Information
The next Jordan Night (Baptism Class) at St. Victoria is
Thursday, September 20, 6 p.m., in Clare’s Well. If you are
expecting a child (birth or adoption) in the next few months,
and have not attended a class within the last five years, please
register for a class. We do ask parents to fulfill this
requirement prior to a Baptism.
•
We need to see a copy of your child’s birth certificate prior to
the Baptism.
•
When planning your child’s Baptism, please be aware that you
may have only one man and one woman as sponsors and one
must be a Confirmed Catholic. (Or, you may have just one
sponsor.)
•
The next Baptisms are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday,
July 7 and 8. Baptisms are celebrated during all Masses and
after the 5 p.m. Saturday and 10:45 a.m. Sunday Liturgies.
•
Contact Mary Harvey in the parish office at
mharvey@stvictoria.org or 443-2661 x206 to schedule a

Sunset Fest Corner
Saturday, August 25
The dates is set. Saturday, August 25, is our annual
late-summer get-together. We’ll gather in Lion’s Park
(across from the church) for a 5 p.m. outdoor Mass
followed by a yummy picnic supper, fun and games. Joe
Hamilton is the overall chair again this year and, as always,
he’s full of good ideas! If you would like to offer your
assistance or ideas, Joe can be reached at 393-4813 or
joe_a_hamilton@hotmail.com. He is looking for someone to
co-chair this year and be ready to take over next year!
The Lucky 13 Raffle Committee started early this year.
The annual Lucky 13 Raffle is part of our Sunset Fest fun
and a great opportunity to win some super prizes, starting
with $5,000! Actually, everyone is a winner because every
$20 raffle ticket includes hundreds of dollars in coupons for
local businesses. Pick up your package of tickets (five per
household) to sell or buy after all weekend Masses or in the
parish office weekdays. Individual tickets also are available.
(Volunteers are needed to help sell raffle tickets after
Masses. If you can spare 15 minutes to help after any of
the upcoming weekend Masses, contact Deacon Ray at
443-2661 x203 or rortman@stvictoria.org.)
Get your raffle tickets after all weekend Masses
or in the parish office.
Lemonade Sundays
A glass of cold lemonade after Mass is always welcome —
but we need volunteers to help with this ministry. It takes
only a few minutes to set up and take down for this great
opportunity to offer fellowship to fellow parishioners.
Volunteers are needed for 8:45 a.m. Masses on July 8, 22, 29
and August 5, 12, 19 and 26. For the 10:45 a.m. Mass,
volunteers are needed on July 8 and 15 and August 12,19
and 26. Contact Jennifer Blanks at jlblanks@msn.com if you
can help at 8:45 a.m. and Kevin Kolle at 448-1680 or
kevinkolle@yahoo.com for a 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Thank you.
Communion at Home
If you, or someone you know, is unable to come to Mass on
a weekday or weekend (surgery, accident, illness, etc.),
parishioners who are a part of the St. Victoria Pastoral Care
Team will be happy to bring Communion to your home. It can
be a one-time only occasion or on-going for as long as you like.
To arrange for Communion at home, please call Marlene Bohn
at 443-3327 or Pat Leonard at 934-7565.

Faith Formation Update
As we come to the end of this fiscal year, and the real start
of summer with the 4th of July just around the corner, I am
pleased to announce to you that we have completed the
process for the new hires for St. Victoria’s Faith Formation
Department. As I mentioned in an earlier communication to
you, Emily Klinker is our new DRE (Director of Religious
Education), or as we like to call it at St. Victoria, our
Director of Faith Formation. Emily was previously Director
of Religious Education for Guardian Angels in Chaska.
Emily will oversee our Religious Education and Youth
programs including Grades K-8, Confirmation and Youth
Ministry. Emily will begin working with us in July.
Nick Tofteland, our Youth Minister, will coordinate Faith
Formation for Grades 6-10 (including Confirmation) and
Youth Ministry, under Emily's direction.
Our new Assistant Director of Faith Formation is Sara
Svenby who currently holds a leadership position in Faith
Formation at St Hubert’s in Chanhassen. Sara will
coordinate our K-5 Faith Formation effort under Emily's
direction beginning in September.
I am excited that they will share their faith, their experience,
their enthusiasm and their talent with us at St. Victoria. As
you have the opportunity to meet them, thank you for giving
them a warm welcome to St. Victoria. I know that your
rallying around them and supporting them will mean so
much.
I would like to express my appreciation to the team of
parishioners who met all of the candidates selected for
interviews for these positions. They were personally
enormously helpful to me throughout this process. We are
blessed by their dedication.
I am also grateful to our Faith Formation volunteers for
the dedication and loyal support they bring to our Faith
Formation program. They are all true leaders. They have
taken their time to share their faith with the young people of
our parish. What a gift that is! I am so grateful to them for
that and I look forward to this fall when we can all join
together to continue the strong legacy for youth that has
begun here at St. Victoria.
Fr. Bob

Helping Our Venezuelan Friends
Here’s an easy way to help our friends in Venezuela. The
Esperanza Project collects used cell phones, ink jets, DVDs,
laptops, MP3 players, video game consoles, digital cameras,
GPS devices, digital picture frames and portable DVD
players. Proceeds from the sale of these items are used to aid
the Los Arenales Barrio, part of the Parish of Jesucristo
Resuscitado in Venezuela. There’s a gray plastic tub —
appropriately marked — under the coat rack in the
Franciscan Commons where you can leave your used
electronics. You’ll also find a box marked “Eyes on
Venezuela” on top of the rack where you can leave old
eyeglasses. They will be sent to the medical clinic that is
also part of Jesucristo Resuscitado. Call the parish office if
you have questions.
Telephone Calls
As announced previously, every staff member has a new
extension number. While it is a priority with the St. Victoria
parish staff to be available when you call or stop in, it’s not
always possible. If you do call occasionally and the phone
goes to voice mail, please feel free to leave a message and be
assured whoever you are calling will return your call as soon
as possible. Our new extensions are listed on the front of the
bulletin. So — keep those calls coming and stop in whenever
you are in the neighborhood — we love company!

Youth Corner
Change to Senior High Summer Programming — In lieu
of the mission trip originally scheduled for July 9 to 16 to
Denver, our Senior High students will instead be traveling to
St. Peter for Youth Forum’s Senior High Summer Festival
July 9 to 14. If your teens attended Middle School Camp
previously, they do not want to miss Senior High Camp. The
games are crazier, the messy fight is messier, the speakers
delve deeper into the Word, the band is louder and the food
is incredible! For more information about Senior High
Summer Festival, please contact me or go to the Youth
Ministry site of the parish website.
Where’s Waldo? At Valleyfair! — On Tuesday, July 24,
everyone’s favorite hide and seek book comes to life at
Valleyfair. Middle School Students (students entering grades
6 through 8) will spend the afternoon searching out a group
of real-life Waldos and Wilmas and will earn points for
pictures they take with our red and white striped friends.
Catch a Waldo or Wilma on a ride? Bonus points. Prizes will
be awarded to the team with the most points. Senior High
Students are needed to dress up as Waldo and Wilma! Check
the parish website for information.
Peer Ministry Retreat — If you want to deepen your
involvement in St. Victoria’s Youth Ministries and have
already received the sacrament of Confirmation, then Peer
Ministry is right for you. This retreat will solidify the vision
and purpose for our Peer Ministry and we’ll begin planning
for skits, promotion team, retreat teams and mentors. Mark
your calendars for August 3 and 4!
Movies in the Park — Check the parish website for
information about our movie night planned for Tuesday,
July 31, in Lion’s Park. The movie will start at dusk. Bring
the whole family!

Becoming Who God Intends Us to Be
Enjoy an inspiring evening of food, music and reflection on
Friday, July 20, at St. Edward’s Church in Bloomington. A
reception is planned from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with a program

who will share the impact of Ministry of Mothers Sharing
and her faith on her personal life and journey toward finding
meaning amidst the tragedy that thrust her — a young
woman raising three young daughters — into the national
spotlight when her husband, Tom Burnett, helped bring
down Flight 93 on September 11. Deena is author of
Fighting Back, the book that inspired the movie Portrait of
Courage: The Untold Story of Flight 93. She will be joined
by Robert Robinson who was named “Minnesota’s Master

Minneapolis Star Tribune. Tickets are $25. Register online

Catechetical Institute
Come discover the plan that will transform your work,
your marriage, your family, your community . . . your
life! Now is a great time to prepare for the “Year of Faith”
by continuing in your faith formation. This fall, the
Archbishop Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute will
begin another two-year course at The Saint Paul Seminary.
Under the direction of Jeff Cavins and taught by some of the
best instructors in the Twin Cities, the program follows the
four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and will
make sense of all things Catholic, deepen your faith, and lay
out the roadmap to heaven. The classes are divided into four
eleven-week modules and meet on Monday evenings, 7 to
9 p.m., with two Saturday morning formative sessions per
module. Applications are now being accepted for the class
beginning September 2012. For more information and an
application, visit www.saintpaulseminary.org or
call 651-962-6890. This will be the start of the fifth class. To
date, 335 lay people from around the archdiocese have
graduated from the institute and are serving the local Church
in both professional and volunteer capacities.
Wear your name tag after Mass next weekend (July 7 and 8)
