Matt Dallek Associate Academic Director WASHINGTON CENTER 1608 Rhode Island Ave., NW, 3rd FL Washington, DC 20036 April 23, 2012 To: UCDC Academic Advisory Council (AAC) From: Matt Dallek and Chantal Quintero Re: UCDC’s Summer 2012 Academic Program During the 2011 summer school, the Center offered two courses, which had 40 students total. These seminars received overwhelmingl y positive student evaluations, made the Center a modest profit and established a precedent for UCDC’s consolidated summer mode l. After overseeing a competitive bidding process, the Center signed an agreement with UCLA to hosts its summer 2012 curriculum. There are at least two notable changes to this year’s summer school. First, the Center has an expanded curriculum. The Center is offering four courses through UCLA—including a 4- or 8-unit internship course; a 4 -unit upper-division political science campaigns and election seminar; a 4 -unit upper-division political science course on the politics of intelligence, and a 2 -unit publi c policy seminar in which students will acquire “public skills” such as memo writing and delivering oral presentations helpful for their internships, graduate school, and the full -time workforce. The second innovation is that the Center established a UC DC Summer Public Service Fellowship. Any UC student enrolled in at least two quarter (1.3 semester) units of academic (non -internship) summer coursework at UCDC and interning a minimum of 24 hours a week for ten weeks is eligible to appl y. The Center intends to offer 16 fellowships, each carrying a $1,250 award. (The funds come from profits earned from Summer 2011 and from Notre Dame, which pays the Center for students who take the academic -year themed presidency seminar.) The fellowship will defray student s’ costs of attending UCDC and hopefull y encourage more of them to enroll in a course while linking UCDC more closel y to its summer academic program. The Center confronts growth opportunities and challenges in the years ahead. By providing students with excellent courses, advertising seminars across 1 campuses, and increasing the number of fellowships, UCDC’s Summer School has the potential to expand enrollments, provide students with greater choice, and help more students afford the cost of UCDC. While we believe that all of these goals are achievable, the “culture” of summer remains a hurdle. The lone campus requiring students to enroll in an academic seminar is Santa Barbara; indeed, UCDC summer students often intern full -time (or near -full-time) and don’t t ypicall y plan to take academic courses in the summer. Diminishing the administrative complexit y across the campuses is another challenge. UCB and UCSD students, for example, aren’t allowed to enroll in non -Berkeley and nonSan Diego internship courses. In the end, however, we believe that the summer program has a bright future. UCDC’s summer academic program will help students accelerate their graduation dates, sharpen their research, writing and critical thinking skills, enrich their internship experie nces and advance their UC educations —and students will be the best ambassadors for the program. 2 SUMMER 2012 – UC WASHINGTON CENTER COURSE OVERVIEW -- http://www.summer.ucla.edu/ucdc Spies!
