revolution. How we define freedom, liberty,
patriotism and nation is directly related
to the experiences of the individuals who
participated in the war. This exhibition
encourages visitors to consider how a single
event so reshaped American society that its
impact is still experienced today: what was
gained, what was lost, and what is left for us
to resolve. The last public tour of the exhibit
is held Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. 276-6825005, www.williamkingmuseum.org
• CLOSING JAN. 18: “Cavaliers
of Nowhere: Photography by Tammy
Mercure and Dawn Roe” is on exhibit
at William King Museum of Art, Abingdon,
Va., in the United Company Contemporary
Regional Gallery. This two-person exhibition
connects contemporary photographers
Mercure of Nashville, Tenn., and Roe of
Asheville, N.C. Mercure captures a wayward
vision of Appalachia in up-close portraits
of low-culture, regional provincialism
and burning recklessness. In quieter places,
Roe’s landscapes document overgrown
outdoor spaces. Through these ongoing
photographic projects by Mercure and Roe,
this exhibition examines the distinct social
and physical realities of rural Appalachia.
