ABINGDON HOUSE SCHOOL
USEFUL INFORMATION
Contact with Other Parents
Once your child has started at Abingdon House School, should you wish to speak to another
parent about how the school has helped, please advise either Mr Roy English or Ms Cordelia
Fraser who will arrange this for you.
Timing of the School Day
The doors open for morning registration at 8:30 am. The first lesson will begin at 8.45 am. A
prompt arrival would be appreciated. The pick-up time for the children will be 3.00pm each day for
Otters class and 3:15pm for all other classes except Friday, which is at 3:00pm for all classes.
Absence
No child should be absent from school without prior permission of the Head Teacher.
Appointments to see the doctor, dentist, or optician, etc. should be arranged for outside school
hours, wherever possible but we realise that this is not always possible.
If your child is ill please telephone 0845 2300426 each morning with an update on your child’s
illness or e-mail to ahs@abingdonhouseschool.co.uk
Drop off/Pick up
Parents must inform the school office regarding drop off/pick up. Should there be any change from
the information held on record you must inform the school office immediately with new contact
name and number. (This also includes play dates/parental absence from the family home etc.)
Medication at school
If a child requires medication during the school day, a consent form or note must be signed by the
parent / guardian of the child. In certain circumstances it may only be appropriate for the parent to
administer such medication. This will be at the discretion of the Head Teacher.
As in any school, there is the occasional case of head lice. We would be grateful if you could
check your child’s hair regularly at home and immediately inform us of an outbreak! We would ask
that you keep your child at home until treatment has been successful in clearing any lice / eggs.
Morning Break.
Please provide your child with a healthy snack for break time. This may be fresh or dried fruit. We
do not allow sweets, chocolate (including chocolate drinks) or nuts.
We provide water for your child’s personal use throughout the school day. We do not allow fizzy
drinks or fruit juices.
Lunch
A healthy, nutritious meal will be provided each day. Children are encouraged to try everything on
their plate but they do not have to eat it. If your child is susceptible to mood swings, a lack of
motivation/concentration, this can often be alleviated by a pattern of regular and healthy eating
and drinking that supports successful learning. Food supplied to the kitchen may have been
prepared in an environment where traces of nuts may be found, so please let us know if your child
has a nut allergy.
Clothes
Trainers may have Velcro fasteners or laces. Boys may wear shorts or long trousers. Girls may
wear woollen tights or trousers in very cold weather. To aid identification, all clothes (including
underwear) and shoes should be clearly marked with the child’s own name.

Games and PE
PE/Games kit will be needed for Games afternoon. PE/Games kit may be worn into and from
school on the day the children have Games. Younger classes have Music & Movement.
Contact with Staff
Home/School Diaries.
These will form an important link between home and school. Staff will write messages as
necessary and sign the diaries on a daily basis. We would be grateful if parents could do likewise
to aid communication.
Curriculum
Abingdon House School offers a full curriculum. Please notify us if you want your child withdrawn
from any of the following subjects:
 Religious Education
 A daily act of collective worship (this is usually reflective thoughts at the end of break)
 Sex and Relationships Education (pupils aged 7+)
Homework
 Reading. Once a child begins to read, a book is sent home with them every afternoon.
Parents are asked to help by listening to their child read for about ten minutes every
evening. It is not necessary to finish the book; your Reading Group Teacher will guide you
with this. The diaries will double as a reading record so that progress may be monitored.
 Other homework might take the form of written work or exercises recommended by the
teacher or therapist working with your child. Please support the homework routine.
 You may wish to e-mail a message to a member of staff on
ahs@abingdonhouseschool.co.uk
 You may also wish to arrange a meeting with a staff member at the end of the school day,
3.15-3.30pm in addition to the regular parent teacher meetings. Please contact the school
secretary to arrange an appointment.
Emergency Contact
In the case of an emergency we will send out information via e-mail or text.
In the event of no means of communication the pupils will remain supervised at school unless
advised to move elsewhere by the emergency services.
