Welcome to studying offshore at Macquarie University. This guide has been prepared to assist you with the key Macquarie University’s estudent, online learning and student email systems, as well as providing some information on Frequently Asked Questions about studying offshore with Macquarie.

Before classes commence

Here are a few really important things that you need to get done before classes commence:

4 Update your contact details on eStudent

Go to: https://student1.mq.edu.au

. To update your details on eStudent you will need your student number to login.

Your initial password is your date of birth (ddmmyyyy).

Then click on the link ‘My Details’ on the left.

4 Pay your fees

If you have not paid your fees by the due date you may attract a late fee fine. Please talk to your local course coordinator for fee payment options.

Who do I speak to about my course/subjects?

For the remainder of your time in your

Who do I speak to if I have a question about fees?

General fee enquiries should be made to the local course coordinator or by contacting

Where do I get my campus or student card?

Your campus or student ID card should be ready for collection from your local course coordinator approximately 3 weeks after you commence your study, provided that you submitted a passport size colour photo when you accepted your Macquarie offer.

Can I transfer my study to

Macquarie’s Sydney campus?

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to continue your study at our Sydney campus. Generally, you can submit a request to transfer to Sydney after completing at least one semester at an offshore campus. To check your eligibility to transfer, contact your local course coordinator or send an email to transnational@mq.edu.au

Please note that while you study in Sydney, you will pay the standard international student fees applicable to that year.

What is the myMQ student portal?

The online portal students.mq.edu.au is the gateway for information for enrolled students.

It contains links to frequently-accessed pages such as student email and calendar, eStudent, online learning and many other student and university resources. Approximately 48 hours after you enrol, you can retrieve your password and login by selecting “First Time Log In” on the student portal homepage. The first time you login you will be requested to change your password.

What is eStudent?

eStudent is the Macquarie computer system that allows you to enrol in units (subjects), register for lectures and tutorials, update your contact details, check your finances and check your exam results at the end of every session. You can access eStudent from the student portal homepage or go directly to https://student1.mq.edu.au

What is iLearn?

iLearn is the software that controls the online component of each unit. It will only list the units you are currently enrolled in and for each unit there will be a unit outline, a discussion board to post messages to your classmates, an email system to directly email your teacher, and any readings that the teacher has posted online for you to read. iLearn can be accessed from the student portal (by clicking on “online units”) or directly via ilearn.mq.edu.au

How can I appeal against my grades if

I think I didn’t get the grades I deserve?

Please refer to the Office of the Dean of Students webpage for information on how to lodge a grade appeal. www.deanofstudents.mq.edu.au/grades.html

What can I do if I get sick or have an emergency that affects my studies?

If you need extra time to do an assignment it is best to contact the lecturer directly (as early as possible) and ask for an extension, giving reasons why you need extra time and providing any documentation to support your case. If you have a serious illness or emergency that affects an exam or your studies, you can apply for special consideration, which may mean that you can sit the exam at a later date. To apply for special consideration you should first contact the local course coordinator.

It is recommended that you email your lecturer and/or tutor to inform them of any problems as early as possible. Their contact details can be found in the unit outlines of each unit. Please note that you must attach documentary evidence to support your claims (eg. medical certificates).

In extremely serious cases you may need to apply to withdraw from your studies and defer for a semester.

In this case you should always contact your local course coordinator and the Macquarie Transnational team at transnational@mq.edu.au

The student homepage students.mq.edu.au provides the gateway to information for current students and has been designed to bring all student resources to one location.

The homepage contains links to:

• student email and calendar

• online learning

• library catalogue and reserve systems

• eStudent

• unit home pages

• many other student and university resources.

Click on the ‘Students’ link on the Macquarie homepage: www.mq.edu.au

Click on

‘First Time Log In Process’ and it will guide you.

How to make use of the student portal:

• Start to use it daily.

• Make it your homepage or add it to your favourites.

• Keep up to date with the latest news and events at the University.

• Regularly access your student email – it is the channel that the university will use for official communication with you.

• Academic staff and the Macquarie International team will also use your student email to send you information.

• You can forward your student email (Gmail) to another account; but keep that forwarding information current. It is your responsibility.

• Link to the various resources based on the individual unit codes.

• Assign a strong password, change it regularly or when you suspect that it has become known by another person. It will sync all your systems passwords that use your student number as the username.

• Find books and other resources in the online catalogue.

Click on ‘Student Email’ to access your student gmail account.

You should check your student email at least once a week.

The university sends important information about your enrolment to your student email account.

Login Instructions

Go to https://student1.mq.edu.au

Enter your Student ID number.

If you have not logged into eStudent before, your password is your Date of Birth in the form:

DDMMYYYY.

If you have forgotten your password, please contact the Student IT

Helpdesk on (02) 9850 4357 and follow the prompts.

If it is your first time logging into eStudent or if your password has just been reset, the system will prompt you to change your password.

Note: Passwords are case sensitive.

This is where you can update your address details or change your preferred mailing address

Changing your password in eStudent

To change your password, click on:

You need to enter your old password, new password and confirm your new password.

Online Learning

All Macquarie University subjects have an online component, which can be accessed via iLearn. iLearn is the name of the computer system that Macquarie uses to give students access to online learning.

The phrases ‘iLearn’ and ‘online learning’ mean the same thing.

You can access iLearn via the Online

Units link on the MQ homepage or at ilearn.mq.edu.au.

Login to iLearn using your MQ OneID.

Your username is your student number and your password is your original MQID password, unless you have already changed your password in myMQ.

Here you can look at the unit guide, the reading list, and descriptions of your assignments, as well as participate in online forums, contact your teacher or listen to iLectures.

The Transnational Course Coordinator at Macquarie

University will work with you to resolve complaints and grievances as soon as possible.

However, where a complaint or grievance cannot be resolved with the assistance of the coordinator, the matter will be referred to the Manager,

Quality Assurance at Macquarie International.

Grade Appeal

Discrimination and harassment

Macquarie University does not tolerate discrimination against or harassment of students, by any other students, or by any employee, whether academic or general staff.

The University has put in place clearly defined grievance procedures to deal with discrimination and harassment. These will enable you to have your complaints dealt with sympathetically, effectively and within reasonable time.

External appeals

If you are not satisfied with the University’s internal response to a grievance, you can appeal to the NSW Ombudsman, who will endeavour to resolve the matter.
