Day 2
1. Turn to page 244 in your Storytown book. Read the genre information and remember that nonfiction gives
information about topics, and that it can have graphic aids, which gives more facts.
2. As we read “The Bee” together we will fill in the graphic organizer with the main idea and details.
3. Read each section and summarize. Example: When I read nonfiction, I look for the main ideas to include when I
summarize. For “Brilliant Bees”, I could write: “There are thousands of honeybees in one hive an each one has a
specific job to do.”
4. Complete the entire story together summarizing each selection.
5. Asking comprehension questions as the students read.
Day 5
1. Turn to page 270 in your Storytown text.
2. Draw a picture of the bee and label all the parts.
3. After the diagram is complete the students will respond to the following questions:
 What do you learn about the bee’s stinger in this diagram?
 What parts of the diagram helped you learn about the winds and abdomen?
 What part of a bee is used to smell things?
 What does the compound eye have?
 What do the long hairs on the legs do?
4. Independent Practice Have children meet with a partner to study the diagram on pages 270-271. Have them jot
down on index cards three new questions and answers based on the diagram.
