Parkland Soccer is proving itself a popular alternative to club soccer. We are happy to report an increase in participants over 2011, our inaugural year. This season the group has grown to eight U6 teams, six U8 teams and four 8+ teams. Approximately 140 exuberant kids fill the Parkland soccer fields Monday and Wednesday nights as parents and grandparents cheer them on. It is truly a community endeavor with organizers, players, coaches and families all from Parkland and surrounding neighbourhoods, and local soup lady, Caroline Hart, supplying the “catering” of hot meals and other delights. (Everyone is welcome to come to the Hall on soccer nights to check out Caroline’s menu items for sale). Parkland Community Association provides administration, storage and building access, and financial support to purchase equipment and pay for other soccer related expenses. Since March, the soccer coordinators have been working diligently, organizing the kids into teams, finding/ begging for coaches and assigning other volunteers. This is a big job and they deserve a big thank you. Coordinators are: Kara Lloyd (U6), Susan Peeters (U8) and Cindy Ross (8+). Almost 150 neighbourhood kids playing community soccer on local fields, parents and others volunteering, having neighbors talking and laughing together. All of this makes for a strong neighbourhood. Thank you for the financial and organizational support from Parkland Community Association, Kara Lloyd, Susan Peters and Cindy Ross. It's great to have Community Soccer back. T h e O ff i c i a l PARKLAND C o m m u n i t y N e w s l e t t e r I JUNE 2 0 1 2 5 will never have a reason to be as fearful of dogs as this woman was. If your child feels threatened by a stray dog they must not run. Dogs have a strong chase reflex whether they are friendly or not. A friendly dog may chase a running child and inadvertently knock them down, but a dog with its predatory instincts on alert may be incited to bite. BE A TREE! Your child should stand motionless wrapping their arms close to themselves. Do not make eye contact. Look away or even close your eyes. A dog may come and sniff them but would likely find this person uninteresting and wander away. Then the child should quietly walk to a responsible adult. BE A TREE CHILDREN AND STRANGE DOGS As a veterinarian and dog trainer, I have an extensive background in animal behavior, and I have taught my children to behave appropriately around dogs… I thought. Recently I scrambled to intervene as one of my sons walked up to an unknown dog, asked for and received permission to greet the dog from its owner, where upon, he grabbed the dog and hugged it around the neck. This dog was giving out all kinds of signals that this made him uncomfortable, and fortunately he chose not to bite. I previously recounted the story about a very big sweet dog strolling into the Tsuu T’ina bottle depot carrying a plastic jug hoping someone would throw it for him. The woman two stations over from me started screaming hysterically, swinging her arms, jumping up and down, and kicking out at the dog. This silly dog dropped his jug at her feet, sat down with his head cocked to one side, and looked over this mad woman, until we shooed him out of the depot. Now I have my own personal phobias so I try to be sympathetic of others, but her shrill over-the-top screaming hurt my ears and made me want to bite her. If this dog had a fearful or aggressive bone in his body this woman was doing everything to potentially set him off. By teaching children how to behave when they encounter a stray dog, hopefully they 6 If the child is on the ground they need to BE A LOG! They can be a rolled up stone for that matter, but the same rules apply, arms wrapped around the body and motionless. No eye contact. A child’s high-pitched screams are often irritating or exciting to dogs. It goes against a child’s need to cry for help, but trees and logs are silent. Do not assume you or your child can read a dog’s intentions. Dogs about to bite may have their heads up, and wag their tails. Tail wagging has little to do with judging aggression. The dog my son was hugging radiated discomfort by panting, straining to get away, and pinning his ears back. Liam was oblivious to the dog’s body language in his excitement to greet the dog. Forgetting the rules is part of why they’re children and most children love animals. Review the rules frequently and remind children their dog is not the same as every other dog. If your child does wish to pet a leashed dog, first teach them to ask permission of the owner, and then wait for permission to be granted. Finally, let the owner get control of the pet in a sit-stay or on a short leash prior to putting out your hand palm upward and below the dog’s face. Scratch the dog’s neck, do not place your face in the dog’s face, or ask the owner how their pet likes to be touched. Teaching your children about dogs may save your child from a nasty bite or worse. Any animal bite should be reported to the authorities. By being smart with dogs and children we also create an atmosphere where our beloved dogs are welcome and accepted in the community. Jennifer L. Building Tennis Communities is a program that was developed by Tennis Canada in 2001 in response to a study indicating that most tennis was played on city or public courts in the summer. The study also showed participation in tennis was declining due to the club based delivery system. Building Tennis Communities strives to promote tennis in neighbourhoods across Canada. All 10 Provincial Tennis Associations (including Tennis Alberta) are also involved with the Building Tennis Communities Strategy. The mandate is to increase and sustain tennis participation so that tennis can help build healthy and active communities. Park 96 was recently selected as one of the neighbourhoods in Calgary to implement Tennis Canada’s program. Park 96 is now a BTC!! Our goal is to increase participation in tennis programs for all ages. What is Progressive Tennis? Progressive tennis introduces tennis in a fun and interactive way ensuring immediate success for young players. Using modified balls, racquets, nets and courts which are better suited to their size, young players are equipped to enjoy rallies and learn the fundamentals of the sport. Children learn skills quickly allowing for an easy transition to full court. Please consider signing up for the Spring Tennis program at Park96. For more information please call the office (403-271-7516) or check out the park website (www.park96.com). PARK 96 UPCOMING EVENTS AND PROGRAMS Park 96 is taking steps towards going green and one of the first steps is to eliminate the amount of paper that is used for advertising of Park 96 events and programs. We are working with the local schools by having them post flyers on their website about the upcoming events. The other delivery method would be to send out emails to all residents of Parkland as opposed to delivering flyers to all homes. If you would like to receive updates from Park 96, please send an email with your name, address and email preference to park96@telus.net – then stay tuned for updates! ST PHILIP FINE ARTS SCHOOL We are nearing the completion of our Fence Art Project and on behalf of the Fence Art Committee we want to thank all of our amazing volunteers for the many hours they have donated to this project. The project began with the theme of Art in our World. There was then a callout to students to submit their design ideas. The selection process was very difficult. Once the designs were chosen they were reproduced on transparencies to be traced onto the wood. They were then sent out to be primed and cut out. Once the shapes were cut out a team of grade 5 and 6 students began the creative process of choosing colors and painting. Once the painting was completed they were sent out to be varnished. Now the beautiful art creations are being mounted on the chain link fence surrounding our school for all to enjoy and celebrate the fine arts at St. Philip. Father Wilbert blessed all of us and our efforts at a dedication ceremony on Friday, April 27th. We celebrated in prayer, music and song. This project has been a massive undertaking but so very worth the effort. As a school we would like to thank the following people: The Herasymiuk family for priming, cutting and varnishing ALL of the pieces of art The Bojakli family for materials The Chiocchio family for a cash donation Mrs. Molina, Mrs. Cartin, Mrs. Tremblay and Mr. Langille for their leadership Mr. Hill and Mr. Stevenson for installing the art work ~continued next page~ 403-271-6300 T h e O ff i c i a l PARKLAND C o m m u n i t y N e w s l e t t e r I JUNE 2 0 1 2 17 SCHOOL NEWS A huge thank you goes out to the talented Fence Art Committee and all of their hard work making this project become a reality. June will see the second incarnation of one of Calgary’s newest festivals: Cyclepalooza. Local grassroots initiatives, non-profit organizations, bicycle stores and related businesses in Calgary collaborate on this initiative to bring “ten days of bike fun” to Calgary. The festival will be held from June 23 to July 2, 2012. Cyclepalooza is a ten-day volunteer-directed, communitybased, do-it-yourself bicycle festival modelled after Portland’s Pedalpalooza and Vancouver’s Velopalooza. It promotes the arts, culture, community, and fun in Calgary. It is fuelled by the desire to bring more publicity and interest to cycling and its positive impacts on communities, and to bring people together through cycling. Cyclepalooza’s aim is to celebrate the unique feeling and kinship that comes from cycling in your community. Anyone, whether it’s a business, an organization, a church, a rock band, a group of friends or an enterprising individual can be part of Cyclepalooza. All it takes is an idea for an event that has to do with or happens on bicycles. It can be as simple as a ride to the park with a picnic, or as elaborate as a bicycle prom or a bicycle-themed art exhibition. The online calendar at cyclepalooza.ca is open to anyone to advertise their events. With dozens of events organized by the community, those ten days in June will turn Calgary into a burst of cycling activity. ~continued on page 22~ Dr. Jim Carney Dr. John Thompson Dr. Zahir Damji Accepting New Patients Evening Appointments Available Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Children Welcome Implant Restorations Teeth Whitening Velscope Cancer Screening Cerec AC- Crowns Done in One Visit! 403-271-2033 Suite 220 755 Lake Bonavista Drive SE lakebonavistadental.org T h e O ff i c i a l PARKLAND C o m m u n i t y N e w s l e t t e r I JUNE 2 0 1 2 19 HOME GARDENING WITH BARBARA by Barbara Shorrock No Work Garden Have you ever bought a book because the title was so catchy you couldn’t resist? My latest indulgence is No Work Garden by Bob Flowerdew. How can you pass up a title like that? Although he is a Brit writing for English gardeners, there is plenty of good stuff in here that will work for us in our Canadian prairie/Chinook region. He covers such topics as “Ways to Save Work”, “Effortless Weed Control”, “No More Digging”, “Saving Effort in Flower Gardens”, and “Grow More Vegetable for Less Work”. There are many techniques that can be incorporated into our local gardens; maybe some of them will work for you. First of all, while it is true that the more you put in, the more you should get out, you must also ask: Is it worth it? If you have a good strong back (or access to someone else’s) then go ahead and dig your flower and vegetable beds. According to Bob’s research, the increase in crops in any year from digging is much less than the increase from adding more water. Rotate your crops (carrots here one year, peas and beans the next), cover with mulch, compost regularly, and the health of the soil will look after itself without annual turning over. When planting seeds, you don’t need a fine tilth over the whole bed; a spot the size of a coin every foot or so will do. If you raise your beds and walk on the paths between, they will not become compacted by your feet. Raising the beds means less bending for us, and it’s also good for the plants. The beds warm quicker in the spring and the plants’ roots are less likely to become waterlogged in wet times. Conversely, drying out can ACADEMY DENTURE CLINIC STOP: • Avoiding foods you enjoy • Using adhesives • Being self-conscious of your smile • Looking older than your age Southcentre Mall Suite 126A, 100 Anderson Rd SE (403) 269-8308 20 become a problem, which is best prevented with seep hose irrigation rather than overhead sprinkling. If you must water your beds with a sprinkler, do so in the early morning, so the sun can do its work before evening. One of my favorite chapters was on Paths and Edges. While grass looks best between flower beds, it does take work to look after, and is time consuming if it is narrow and has lots of edges. Furthermore, it encourages slugs. Stepping stones or slab paths are almost maintenance free. They are quickly and simply laid on a bed of sand and can be moved if your plans change. Wooden edging rots too soon. Plastic and metal edgings rarely look good or last well. Worst of all are upturned bricks or tiles, which are a haven for pests and weeds and don’t allow a mower to cut over them safely. A row of bricks or cobblestones laid tightly along the edge of the grass/flowerbed border at ground level allows the wheel of the lawn mower to run along neatly with never a need for the edger again (Sorry, that last statement is not quite true. The grass will creep over the bricks eventually, but a trim every couple of years isn’t arduous.) It takes a bit of labour to install, but is a great example of “Short term pain for long term gain”. There is an abundance of practical advice in this little book. Perhaps it would make a good addition to your personal library. By the time you read this in June, our spring gardening frenzy will be well under way. Six months in the garden – my favorite way to spend the summer. It’s hard not to when the weather gets warm. It is motivating to see people out walking, jogging and bike riding. If you haven’t done a lot of physical activity over the winter, start slowly. Warm your body up to the idea of exercise. Try a light work-out then see how your body feels the next day. Learn to listen to your body and it will tell you if you are working at a good level of exertion. Self-monitoring how hard your body is working can help you adjust the intensity of the activity by speeding up or slowing down your movements. You need to challenge your body, at least a bit, to get results. You have to find the right pace for you, a pace that challenges but remains fun. Be realistic…we are all different. Don’t try to keep up with someone else. Be proud of what you can do and the fact that you are committed to improving your health. In the spring, a lot of people are motivated to get active, because they want to look good in their summer clothes: tank tops, shorts and bathing suits. Yes, exercise will improve your self esteem and will make you look and feel great. Remember though, that the vast majority of the population does not have a perfect body. Exercise for fun and fitness, not only to burn calories. Wear what you want today and feel good about yourself. Don’t forget about the “fun” part enough either. If you want to lead a healthy active lifestyle for the rest of your days, you will have a tough time sticking with it if you don’t find an activity that you enjoy and that works with your schedule. If you are new to exercise, try a group activity with people who share the same interests: Pilates, Yoga, Core, Bootcamps, Aquacize…. Also, schedule activity to benefit your body, mind, and spirit into your weekly routine, then it just becomes a good habit. Concerned about your investment fees? WRITE ON PREPPING YOUR BBQ FOR SUMMER Lon Hofer A favorite thing to do at any time of year, especially summer, is eat. Nothing is better in the summer than a plate of barbecued hamburgers, steaks, or chicken skewers, complimented with a good salad and baked potato. However the accurate cooking and taste of these foods can be affected by a built up grill, dirty coals / rocks, or clogged burners. Cleaning your barbecue is easy, but it can also be made easier by following a couple of preventative actions during the summer: • Seasoning your grill – Remove your grill, wash it with soapy water, rinse it, dry it (not drip dry), and apply vegetable or olive oil. Put it back in the barbecue, turn on high for 10 minutes and back to medium heat for 20-30 minutes. Your grill will last longer and your food will stick less. You can apply oil prior to cooking each time, with the barbecue off (especially if using aerosol spray). • Cleaning your grill AFTER you cook – The best time for you to use your wire brush is after you have cooked, while the grill is still hot, so your food debris removes effortlessly and without taking any of the grill with it. • Cleaning the inside of barbecue: • Clean the grill as per above, and remove any ashes from the rocks and keep them in a coffee tin. Use them in your garden if you need to keep slugs away. You can wipe the barbecue’s cover but don’t use chemicals, and it’s not going to affect the barbecue’s performance so do this as you wish. • Cleaning the outside of barbecue: • Simply use hot, mildly soapy water, with a rag, and be sure to rinse it well and dry it. Place in the sun to complete the drying. If your burner is operating unevenly, search online for ‘how to unclog a grill burner’. I think all of us deserve some extra summer considering how hard we work during the deep freeze of winter. Calgarians have been enjoying the Stampede for 100 years now, so even if summer doesn’t arrive when it should, you’ll soon have an extra reason to get out and celebrate anyway. It will be an enormous milestone for a truly world class event. I urge everyone to join in this year’s festivities. Calgary is a big city now –big cities have big celebrations and they also have lots of pavement. The effort to clean up and maintain Calgary’s thousands of kilometers of streets and alleys is now well underway. With all of that work to be done, city staff must focus their efforts in critical areas. I have heard questions from many of you over the spring, asking if your paved back alley will be swept. The answer is that once those critical areas are done (by July, weather permitting), City staff will get down to sweeping other areas. BUT, if you would like to have your paved alley swept, you must call in a request to 3-1-1. If you have an unpaved alley, http://ow.ly/avV7F is a useful link. Similarly, the City will be re-painting the lines on our streets this summer. For most of Ward 14, this is scheduled to have been finished by the end of May (with the exception of Silverado, which is scheduled for August), so if you feel that there have been any major omissions, I urge you to contact 3-1-1. The same thing goes for potholes, and you can also check out this link - http://ow.ly/aunxm. Finally, the first of hopefully many solar powered crosswalk signals in Ward 14 is up and running at Sun Valley Boulevard and Sun Harbour Road SE. I put forth an application to council proposing the pilot project for these solar powered lights on June 20th, 2011. There are several different versions around the city, and the Roads Department is looking for feedback on the project. You can learn more and make comments at http://ow.ly/avOYg, or call 3-1-1 to make comments as well. Speaking of 3-1-1, here’s a treat for anyone who loves a good bar graph… This graph gives a breakdown of the number of service requests made to 3-1-1 in Ward 14 communities for the month of March. Out of all 14 wards for that month, Ward 14 had the third fewest number of requests with 1,868. There are a couple of events on the horizon that I want to share. On June 25th a lucky class from Ward 14 will be introduced in a Regular Meeting of Council because of the political acumen, and literary prowess of one of its students. In May, I asked Ward 14 schools to pose an essay question to their Grade Six students. I (and my team of judges) will be choosing the best from the best of each class. The question was How does Municipal Government affect Me? Stay tuned, because the winner will be posted on www.peterdemong.ca, and please consider saving some time on the morning of September 22 to join me at my annual pancake breakfast. The goal of the breakfast is to increase membership registrations for Ward 14’s community associations. ALDERTALK is on June 16th at the Willow Ridge Community Centre (680 Acadia Dr. SE) from noon to 2pm, so come out and have your say. Otherwise, you can always contact me at (403) 268-1653 or by email at eaward14@calgary.ca. My team has also been working hard on a brand new Facebook fan page for me that you should take a look at (and hit the “like” button if you want to follow).
