English Assignment #1
Vocabulary Flashcards
Purpose: Research suggests that the most critical factor in reading comprehension and word analysis is
vocabulary.
Objective: Given vocabulary words from Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, students will be able to
analyze definitions, parts of speech, and word origins for enhanced reading comprehension. Students are
required to memorize definitions, approximately five (5) words a week.
While many of these words may be new to you, some should sound familiar. Furthermore, as you
advance in your academic career, vocabulary will increasingly separate the excellent essays from the
good. Since most of these words come from Fahrenheit 451, the definitions will be reinforced when you
read the novel in September. Please be aware that there may be more than one definition and part of
speech for each word. Please pick the definition and part of speech that best fits Fahrenheit 451. You
will have to make predictions. This assignment may be a bit arduous; however, you will be thankful for
it in the long run.
Points Possible: Each group of cards (five total) is worth ten points, for a total of 100 points.
