English Assignment #1 Vocabulary Flashcards Purpose: Research suggests that the most critical factor in reading comprehension and word analysis is vocabulary. Objective: Given vocabulary words from Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, students will be able to analyze definitions, parts of speech, and word origins for enhanced reading comprehension. Students are required to memorize definitions, approximately five (5) words a week. While many of these words may be new to you, some should sound familiar. Furthermore, as you advance in your academic career, vocabulary will increasingly separate the excellent essays from the good. Since most of these words come from Fahrenheit 451, the definitions will be reinforced when you read the novel in September. Please be aware that there may be more than one definition and part of speech for each word. Please pick the definition and part of speech that best fits Fahrenheit 451. You will have to make predictions. This assignment may be a bit arduous; however, you will be thankful for it in the long run. Points Possible: Each group of cards (five total) is worth ten points, for a total of 100 points. Directions / Requirements • Obtain 50 index cards • Make flashcards for five words per week. Bring to class on the first day of school.
