2012 PepsiCo Facts You Should Know
In an effort to build stronger relationships with our partners, PepsiCo invites you to get
to know our organization. We hope you enjoy reading some interesting facts about
PepsiCo's past, present and future. Who knows, you may find these facts very helpful
at the 2012 Trade Show in San Antonio, TX.
1. In October 2010 the Global Nutrition Group was formed and the
Global Beverages Group was formed in June 2011. Indra Nooyi stated
"In the past year we have made very important progress in creating
global organization structures that enable us to leverage our vast
resources more effectively and drive the breakthrough innovation we
need to fuel profitable growth" In September 2011, she announced
that PepsiCo is forming two more steps in the organization structure:
the Power of One-Americas Council, which brings together our top
food and beverage leaders to dramatically expand Power of One (Po1)
snack and beverage initiatives across North, South and Central America and the Global
Snack Group (GSG).
2. Frito-Lay's "Take Back the Streets" initiative aimed at challenging competitors and
growing share, Frito-Lay's Sales teams are building incredible in-store displays around
the country to ensure Frito-Lay snacks are top of mind for shoppers.
3. 2011 marked 50 years since the Frito Co., founded by C.E. Doolin, and the H.W. Lay
& Co., founded by Herman Lay merged to form Frito-Lay, Inc. with the goal of creating a
national reach for their popular snacks.
4. The Queens Zone (Queens, New York) recently partnered with
fashion designer, Marlon Gobel, to help kick off the Marlon Gobel
Spring/Summer 2012 collection as part of New York Fashion
week. Gobel used "Cheetos Orange", "Lay's Yellow" and "Doritos
Red" as the color inspiration for his "Super Mart" collection and
show.
5. PepsiCo Foodservice team announced in November 2011 that it will retain exclusive
beverage pouring rights at Jersey Mike's Subs. This partnership included 500 locations
across 30 states.
6. The Pepsi Refresh Project has made marketing history as it
was written into a case study by the Harvard Business
Review. This project has changed thousands of lives and
hundreds of communities across America. The case study is a
testament to the hard work of those PepsiCo associates who contributed.
7. John Compton, CEO, will lead the Power of One and Global Snack
Group initiatives. He will retain responsibility for the company's $22
billion snack and food business in the Americas and our "Power of
One" sales team in North America.
8. The Doritos brand challenged fans to "Crash the Super Bowl" and compete for $1
million dollars and the opportunity to work with The Lonely Island, which is the Emmy
award-winning trio of Adam Sandberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. They are
responsible for writing, directing and starring in
Grammy award-nominated videos including "Lazy
Sunday" and "I'm On A Boat," as well as digital
shorts from "Saturday Night Live" with musician
Justin Timberlake. 9. In 1961, H.W. Lay and the Frito Co. joined to form FritoLay. The company's name, trademark and wide range of
snacks became well known throughout the country and
began to make and market its snacks internationally. In
1965, came another milestone in company history, when
Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola merged to form PepsiCo.
10. Food for Good is a PepsiCo initiative that began in Dallas in 2009 with the goal of
making healthy food accessible to low-income families. Food for Good recently
completed the third summer of its mobile meals program,
providing more than 500,000 meals to underserved children
in Dallas and Chicago.
11. Frito-Lay celebrated the success of its most
ambitious environmental sustainability project to date
by announcing that the Casa Grande, AZ facility has
achieved its "near net zero" vision - run primarily on
renewable energy sources and recycled water while
producing nearly zero waste. Al Halvorsen, Frito-Lay's
senior director of environmental sustainability, stated
"our Casa Grande facility is now one of the "greenest"
and most efficient manufacturing facilities in America." 12. On November 10, 2011, TV network CNBC aired an original documentary called
"Pepsi's Challenges," during which correspondent Lester Holt introduced viewers to
PepsiCo's culture of innovation, proud history and strategy for sustainable long-term
growth. He interviewed PepsiCo Chairman and
CEO, Indra Nooyi, about PepsiCo's strategy for
growth. 13. Indra Nooyi and John Compton discussed the unique opportunity that Power of
One (PO1) represents for PepsiCo. In simple terms: the "occasions" at which
consumers enjoy snacks and beverages are both common and interlinked. Snack and
beverage occasions, typically, are planned together. The products often are purchased
together. And of course, they are consumed together. PO1 is a way of operating that
has not yet begun to yield its unique benefits.
14. In May 2011, Tim Cost, EVP, Global Corporate Affairs, stated in a letter to PepsiCo
associates his top 10 reasons why he admires PepsiCo.
His number one reason was Strength, stating, "We as a
company generate more than $300 million in retail sales.
Every. Single. Day".
15. Frito-Lay's unique and innovative advertising has been a key part
of the company's success. Today, millions recall some of the most
popular symbols such as Frito the Kid, Oscar the Potato, the Cheetos
Mouse and Baby Horton. 16. In the summer of 2011, Pepsi restarted the "Cola Wars" with its "Santa" and "Polar
Bear" ads enjoying a Pepsi while on vacation.
17. For the second consecutive year, Umran Beba, President PepsiCo Asia Pacific, earned a spot on Fortune magazine's list of the
50 Most Powerful Women in Business 2011: The Global 50. This
prestigious list includes top female corporate executives and
entrepreneurs in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa.
18. Frito-Lay's Phoenix Metro Warehouse accepted delivery of the company's first four
compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered tractors, which will service the Phoenix Total
Direct Delivery market -- large-format, full case delivery to large grocery and club stores.
19. The formation of the Global Snacks Group will advance
PepsiCo’s multi-year strategy to establish global platforms for
marketing, branding and innovations. PepsiCo is focused on
four clear objectives:
1. Strategy: developing a winning portfolio strategy for our
global snacks business.
2. Brands: developing coordinated global brand portfolio
approaches.
3. Innovation: creating and developing breakthrough snacks
innovation around the world
4. Leverage: facilitating best practice-sharing form one successful country to other
parts of the world.
20. In 2011, Frito-Lay celebrated the 50th anniversary of the merging of Frito Co. and
Lay & Co.
21. Arch West, a Frito-Lay executive who invented the crunchy,
triangular tortilla chips known as “Doritos” passed away on
September 20, 2011 at the age of 97. The idea of the Dorito came to
him while on a family vacation in southern California.
22. The city of Plano, Texas recognized Frito-Lay and PepsiCo with
its highest award, the 2011 Environmental Commitment Award. The
company’s 2010 efforts included a Campus Printer Sustainability Project at Frito-Lay
Headquarters to reduce campus –wide printer devices by 90%.
23. Casa Grande, Frito-Lay’s new environmentally
progressive plant in Arizona, is working on significant
reductions: 50% greenhouse gas reductions, 75% of
recycled water and 80% reduction in natural gas. 24. Frito-Lay's "Take Back the Streets" initiative aimed at challenging competitors and
growing share, challenged Frito-Lay's Sales teams to build incredible in-store displays
around the country to ensure Frito-Lay
snacks are at the top-of-mind for shoppers.
25. In March 2011, Pepsi Mexico launched a groundbreaking campaign,
"Pecsi", that for weeks became the most recognized and liked commercial
according to research from a consulting and market research agency.
Lower prices and ads featuring famed soccer player Cuauhtemoc Blanco
communicated the campaign's premise: "It doesn't matter what you call it,
saving is what matters."
26. Frito –Lay executive chef, Stephen Kalil, introduced his latest Fritos Pie
Remix, 50th Anniversary Fritos Pie, to celebrate the historic merger of Frito
Co. and H.W. Lay & Co. to form Frito-Lay, Inc. in 1961.
27. Frito-Lay's new Eco conscience plant, Casa Grande, in
Arizona has achieved its "near net zero" vision to run

28. During the "Pepsi's Challenges" documentary narrated
by correspondent Lester Holt, Indra Nooyi traveled to India to
show how through water conservation and community
replenishment initiatives, Pepsi India has achieved positive
water balance in the country.
29. In October, the 2011 Circle of Champions was celebrated in New York. This award
was created by Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo Chairman and CEO, to annually recognize and
celebrate an elite group of front line Supply Chain associates from around the world.
This year, 220 winners from 42 countries were recognized, including 36 from FLNA.
30. PepsiCo Research and Development team opened a new
PepsiCo Fruit and Vegetable R & D Application Center in
Lebedyan, Russia. The facility is located at PepsiCo's
Lebedyansky juice plant, one of the biggest juice production
sites globally.
31. In its "Bites" blog highlighting interesting food trends and personalities MSNBC's
TODAY.com website showcased an Orlando baker, John Rivers, who combines savory
and sweet flavors into desserts such as Mountain Dew and Dorito cupcakes.
