Under the existing GE Program, the IR major would take a maximum of 48 units outside the major (6 breadth courses, 1 social-cultural diversity course, 3 writing intensive courses) plus 2 composition courses. With maximum double and triple counting of GE courses, the IR major would take 32 units outside the major (6 breadth and 2 composition courses).
Under the new GE Program, the IR major could take 14-17 units outside the major. The lower count assumes that the student will find 6 units of WI coursework within the courses taken for the IR major, and the higher count assumes that 3 units of WI will come from outside the major.
Note: This new GE count assumes that the student will take a foreign language sequence for the major and not test out. If the student tests out, then add 12 more Arts &
Humanities units (Film Studies 1 would count in that category) and the student would have to find an oral skills or third WI course (another 4 units). This would add 16 units to the total 14-17 outside the major to equal 30-33.
