Qualifications
The counselor must possess a Master’s degree in a
mental health related discipline such as
Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, etc. The
graduate level program should include course
work to include mental health assessment,
diagnosis, knowledge of psychological testing,
theories and practice of mental health counseling
and therapy, and practicums in mental health
service provision. Also, a state professional license
to include licensed psychologist, licensed master
or independent social worker, and licensed
professional counselor. An LPC or LMSW license is
required. Two years of school-based counseling
experience is preferred. (An LPC-I or LISW-I may be
considered. An LPC-S is on staff to provide
supervision to LPC-I candidates and an LISW-S is
on staff to provide supervision to LISW-I
candidates.)

Job Description
Job Purpose:
Provide assessment, brief counseling services, and referral to other appropriate levels of treatment for
pupils and families, or resources in the community. Assessment will include mental status examination,
assessment for suicidal/homicidal ideation, stage of emotional, behavioral, educational development,
and assessment of the family system. The counselor must be able to complete a treatment plan and
seek appropriate service connection. The counselor must also keep a progress record on all
student/family contacts. The counselor must be able to relate clinical information to other mental
health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed
professional counselors. The counselor must be able to relate appropriate information to school
administrators, guidance counselors, and teachers in the best interest of the student and family.
