STEP ONE GO RACING IN THE UAE! P5 TRACK DAYS FOR CARS & BIKES By reading this information, you have taken the first step on your motorsport journey! As a rule you need to be a road license holder to drive or ride on tracks here in the UAE. To go racing you need to obtain your UAE Race License, which will be explained in full throughout this booklet. For those wishing to race, but you do not yet hold a road or race license, there is kart racing. Karting is the perfect training ground for those aged 7 and upwards. The Dubai Autodrome offers the opportunity to drive and race across many disciplines of track motorsports with a Karting and Race Tuition Programme to support and prepare future champions. When starting out with a new interest, some good background research is advisable; it’s best to fully understand what you are about to undertake and work out which is the best approach for you. By visiting the paddock on track days and race events, talking through your plans with like minded enthusiasts can be a great source of information. Competitors at both the karting and race circuits will be more than happy to talk about how they got started and the pros and cons of various cars, bikes, karts or championships. You can also ask: What were their first steps? What preparations did they make? How did they decide what car to drive on the track or take racing? How did they get funding? A great first step for road license holders is to book in for an experience with the Race and Drive Centre; this will allow your first track experience to be with a professional instructor. You can ask them all the questions you have and, based on your driving, they can offer their advice as to the best next step for you. You can contact the Race & Drive Centre directly on 04 367 8745 or see the full options available with all the terms and conditions on our comprehensive web site: www.dubaiautodrome.com For the ambitious Karters, an Arrive and Drive session at either the Indoor or Outdoor Karting venues at Dubai Autodrome will be the best introduction into the sport. The Karting team can be reached on 04 367 8744. If you are a Motorcycle rider, then the bike track days would be the first step on track. These are handled by our Track & Competition Executive, Richa, who can be contacted on 04 436 1327 or emailed: richam@dubaiautodrome.com Track Days are a way of enjoying yourself with your car or bike in a safe, controlled environment away from the public highway and with other motor enthusiasts. You are required to hold a full road license or competition license and a track worthy car or bike to participate in Dubai Autodrome Track Days. As a newcomer, you will be required to attend a Novice Track Session held at least once per month on the 2.46km Club Circuit. At the novice session, you will sign on to the event and then you will attend an induction briefing. You will be introduced to the circuit with familiarization laps behind a track coordinator who will demonstrate the correct racing lines for the circuit. You will then participate in your allotted group throughout the Track Day. Once your novice track day has been completed and the coordinators are happy with your driving standards and competency, you will be invited to join the different circuit configurations on offer for the many Track Days all year round. We offer all Track Day participants the chance to enjoy the 3.56km National Circuit, 4.29km International Circuit and the FIA Grade 1 certified, 5.39km Grand Prix circuit. Once you have completed your novice track event, for those driving cars, you will then be able to enjoy the track with a passenger. You can book passengers to join either in advance or on the day during sign on. All passengers must be 16 years or older and be of sufficient height for the seatbelt to work effectively. All participants new to Dubai Autodrome will go through the aforementioned process to make you familiar with the circuit and venue. This applies even if you have completed track events at other circuits. Each time you join a new configuration event at Dubai Autodrome, you will be given familiarization laps by the track coordinators and remain with the relevant group for the event. For specific information relating to the safety equipment required for cars and bikes please call Richa on 04 436 1327. P6 GO RACING IN THE UAE! GO RACING IN THE UAE! P7 CAR TRACK DAYS FAQ Do I need a driving licence? Yes, and you must take your driving licence with you on the day. Anyone attending a Novice Track Day/Evening must: 1. Be in possession of a full current road driving license or current competitions license. Anyone attending an Advanced Track Day must have one of the following: 1. Possession of a full current road driving license and have participated previously on a Novice Track eve/day on the Dubai Autodrome Club Circuit; or 2. Is a current competitions license holder which must be produced; or 3. Has participated on track days at other venues and has with them proof of this via a confirmation letter from another track club or track club membership documents and record cards. Will I need a crash helmet? Yes, open face helmets are fine unless your car doesn’t have a windscreen in which case it must be a closed face helmet. Helmets can be hired at the circuit. I haven’t got any overalls, does that matter? No, the emphasis is on comfort. It will be a long and tiring day and no-one will be expected to turn up looking like Jensen Button! Remember that safety and comfort are paramount and although a race circuit by its very nature will bring an element of competitiveness, there are no prizes to be won so a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt will be fine. Arms and legs must be covered at all times if you are in an open top car. Can I use slick tyres on track? If you are using slick tyres the car must have either a roll cage or roll bars fitted. Does my car need an RTA road worthy document? Yes if you are driving to the venue! No if you are not. The car must be of a safe standard with no leaks and runs well. It must at least have working rear brake lights. No single seaters or open wheels are allowed. Do I need to do anything to my car? Remove or secure all loose articles inside your car, including in the boot. Ensure your indicators and brake lights are in working order. A towing eye must be fitted to the front of the car prior to going on circuit. Ensure you have sufficient fuel to complete your session. Ensure there are no fluid leaks. Check fluid levels and tyre pressures. What about all the flags, do I have to learn them? Don’t panic, as the marshals have ways of making them understood! Everyone is given a thorough safety briefing before your session with full explanations. Will my standard insurance cover me for Track Days? No. If you damage your vehicle, you are on your own, unless you have previously opted for extended coverage on your insurance. The circuit has insurance , but it will only be used for Third Party Public Liability. Can I take extra drivers and passengers? Yes, this is a great idea as they can join in on the fun. Prices for extra drivers and passengers will be advised at sign-on. Do I need instruction? We all need instruction; if we didn’t then we would all be standing on the top step of the podium. Instruction is not compulsory, but it is the best money you will ever spend. You will go faster and safer. If you would like to receive professional instruction please contact the Dubai Autodrome Race & Drive Centre prior to your booked date. DRIVE SAFELY AND ENJOY! P8 GO RACING IN THE UAE! GO RACING IN THE UAE! P9 BIKE TRACK DAYS FAQ What do I need to bring with me? You’ll need the following: • A motocycle in road or track worthy condition. • A one or two piece leather suit (zipped all the way around), suitable riding boots, leather gloves and a motorcycle crash helmet of a recognized manufacturer complying with current ATCUAE/FIM regulations. • To attend the Novice Track Day or Evening on the Dubai Autodrome Club Circuit; or is a current competition license holder, which must be produced; or has participated on track days at other venues and brings with them proof of this via a track club comfirmation letter or track club membership documents. What do I need to wear? A one or two piece leather suit (zipped all the way around), suitable riding boots, leather gloves and a motorcycle crash helmet of a recognized manufacturer complying with current ATCUAE/FIM regulations. Does my bike need an RTA road worthy document? Yes, if you are riding to the venue! No, if you are not. The bike must be of a safe standard with no leaks and running well. It will be scrutineered prior to you going out on track. Do I need to do anything to my bike? Either remove or tape up the side mirrors, as you do not need to see who is behind you. Ensure you have sufficient fuel to complete your session. Check for tyre pressure and fluid leaks. What about all the flags, do I have to learn them? Don’t panic, as the marshals have ways of making them understood! Everyone is given a thorough safety briefing before your session with full explanations. Will my standard insurance cover me for Track Days? It is unlikely that your normal road insurance will cover you for Track Day riding, so please check with your insurance and make arrangements as necessary. The circuit has insurance, but it will only be used for Third Party Public Liability. Am I allowed a pillion? Unfortunately no pillions are permitted at any time whilst on the track. P12 GO RACING IN THE UAE! P13 GO RACING IN THE UAE! PREPARING FOR YOUR FIRST SEASON GETTING YOUR RACE LICENSE Before taking to the circuit, whether it’s to test or race for either cars or bikes, you must now be in possession of your race license. In the UAE, the ATCUAE governs all circuit racing and issues and administers the various licenses that are available (see next page: Getting Your Race License). Do you feel you are ready to enter the world of motor racing? If so you’ll need a National Competition License (NCL) before you race for both Cars and Bikes. When looking at what type of championship to contest, work out what best suits your circumstances and budget. Are you a career driver looking to reach the highest accolades in the sport, or are you looking for the ultimate weekend activity? This essential NCL qualification, provided by the sport’s governing body in this country, the Automobile and Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates (ATCUAE), is recognized throughout the UAE. It includes both academic and practical assessments, ensuring your suitability and helping to maintain safety at the circuit for all other racers and officials. If your ambitions are simply to enjoy yourself, you should consider the following guidelines. Find out the set-up and running costs of the various championships of interest and always look for one that’s within your budget. Those with limited mechanical knowledge should consider ‘arrive and drive’ racing with an established team. Race car set-up can take many years to perfect and not recommended for those without good technical acumen. The Dubai Autodrome Race and Drive Centre is one of the country’s leading centres for advanced driving and race training. Many of our instructors are competitive drivers or riders, ideal coaches to provide the knowledge and skills needed for a successful license application. MOTORCYCLES For cars the license programme follows the model of the MSA in the UK, known as a Super ARDS License Course (www.msauk.org). Once you have booked your test, you will arrive at the circuit and have an instructed session in both the Audi TT 2.0 and the Renault Clio Cup Race Car, followed by both practical and theoretical assessments. The cost is AED1500 per person. All of the prerequisite safety equipment is available locally from a number of companies. Race Car Arrive and Drive Hire is also a popular option. Please refer to the directory at the end of this document for contact details. The MotorCity UAE Sportbike Championship, run by the Dubai Autodrome Motorsport Club (DAMC), has been very well supported since it began in 2007. Grids of over 25 bikes are not uncommon. For more information contact Richa on 04 436 1327 or richam@dubaiautodrome.com. CARS For aspiring car drivers, you have a larger number of championships on offer: • • • • • • • • • Radical Winter Cup Series (www.radicalsportscars.com/uae) NGK Racing Series (Touring Cars, GT, & Clio Cup) (www.dubaiautodrome.com) Formula Gulf 1000 (www.fg1000.net) Dunlop 24 Hours of Dubai (www.24hdubai.com) Clio Cup (www.dubaiautodrome.com) Time Attack (www.motorsportsolutions.ae) UAE Drift (www.driftuae.com) Drag (www.motorsportsolutions.ae) UAE AutoX (www.motorsportsolutions.ae) For bikes you must book for your test, and then participate in theoretical instruction, followed by both practical and theoretical assessments. You will need to bring your motorcycle and full safety gear. The cost is AED1500 per person. For more information and to book your test date, please contact: Dubai Autodrome Race and Drive Centre on 04 367 8745 or 04 367 8700 ext 327 Automobile and Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates (www.atcuae.ae) ATCUAE Headquarters Al Nasser Street Po Box 27487 Abu Dhabi ATCUAE Sharjah King Faisal Road Po Box 1183 Sharjah ATCUAE Dubai Al Wuheida Street, Al Mamzar Po Box 5078 Dubai Tel : +971 2 6212175 Fax : +971 2 6321593 Tel : +971 6 5554955 Fax : +971 6 5554944 Tel : +971 4 2961122 Fax : +971 4 2961133 P14 GO RACING IN THE UAE! GO RACING IN THE UAE! P15 DUBAI KARTDROME KARTING RACE LICENSE & RACING Dubai Autodrome is world renowned for its karting facilities at the Kartdrome and hosts many races each year and is well supported by international teams entries from as far afield as South America and Australia. If you are looking to advance your karting or begin your motorsport career, you have everything you need in one place. For the enthusiast, the Dubai Kartdrome offers Arrive and Drive sessions at either the Indoor 700m tight handling circuit or our Internationally certified 1.2km Outdoor Circuit. Tuition is on offer for children from 7 years old up to 15 years old. Each tuition level is held over weekends and for two consecutive days. The training offers an induction to both circuits and is available for all levels and abilities. Children will be placed in a group with others with similar ability to encourage and develop everyone’s driving skills. One-on-One Tuition for children and adults is also offered. A bespoke program will be conceived with our Chief Karting Instructor to work towards your desired goals. The One-on-One Tuition for all ages is AED600 per hour and can be booked with the Kartdrome directly on rowenaa@dubaiautodrome.com or 04 4361320. KARTING RACE LICENSE If after having a taste of the SWS, we suggest that you advance your karting skills by applying for your karting license. To apply for the license, you must be over 8 years old. The tests required to pass consist of multiple choice exam completed immediately after watching a DVD containing all the theoretical information required. You will then complete a practical assessment on the Outdoor Kartdrome circuit. During the practical element of the test, the instructor will review your driving standards, looking for knowledge on the ideal racing line, controlled braking, consistency in lap times, and pit lane rules—all in line with the National Sporting Authority guidelines and ATC UAE guidelines. Once you pass your assessments, you can send the pass papers to the ATCUAE for your license to be produced. Then you can begin your career in kart racing! Arrive and Race ‘Arrive and Race’ is the next step from ‘Arrive and Drive’ and it’s the same principle where the Kartdrome provides the kart, suit, helmet and gloves, but instead of just driving in a practice session you are entering a race with up to 30 other people! But all tracks around the world have ‘Arrive and Race’ offers or nights. Now couple this with a concept that gives you a worldwide ranking and then chance to compete at the world leisure karting championships! Our kart supplier Sodi came up with the concept in 2009 and any kart circuit that buys Sodi karts becomes a partner track allowing its own customers to compete in the Sodi World Series. Sodi World Series The Kartdrome offers to its customers the chance to taste competitive karting with ease and affordability. With its fleet of four different fleets of Sodi Karts it holds SWS races from kids 7 years of age and upwards, enabling kids to easy stepping stones into motorsports and also easing the blow on the parent’s pockets. The Kartdrome will host approximately 30 SWS races a year in the Sprint category and at least 4 Endurance events. This series is no way just for kids though! In the adult karts we see all forms of adult racers all the way from the enthusiast to the retired professional race drivers whom still get kicks in a karting! • SWS Junior LR4 Cup: 7–14 years • SWS RX7: 15+ years • The Dubai Kartdrome Endurance Championship: 16+ years To get the latest information and race calendar for arrive and race karting, please contact Rowena on rowenaa@dubaiautodrome.com or 04 4361320. KART RACING IN THE UAE Once you have successfully applied for and received your National Race License, you are then permitted to enter kart races in the UAE. If you are planning to race with your own purchased kart, then there are many classes designed for various age groups, so selecting the correct series is vital: • Bambino racing: 5-8 years • Micro Max: 8-10 years • Mini Max: 10-12 years • Junior Max: 12-16 years • Senior Max & DD2: 15+ & 16+ years • Masters Championship within Senior Max and DD2: 31+ years There are many companies and workshops operating in the karting industry in the UAE, and there are three major karting suppliers/teams offering sales and race support in Dubai for Mini Max, Junior/Senior Max and DD2: Sodi Karts, Energy Karts, Birel Kart, and Formula K karts. To get the latest information and race calendar club karting, please contact on karting@ dubaiautodrome.com P16 GO RACING IN THE UAE! GO RACING IN THE UAE! P18 GO RACING IN THE UAE! GO RACING IN THE UAE! P19 GETTING YOUR CAR TO THE UAE CAR PREPARATION & REPAIRS FREIGHT SERVICES There are several teams that can provide a full support service for teams and owners and these are listed in the directory. Alternatively, teams may wish to utilise their own staff to prepare and service cars. Several of the companies listed in the directory are willing to provide workshop space for such teams. Also listed in the directory are companies that can perform specialist services for race teams. There are a multitude of companies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi that carry stocks of race consumables, tools and equipment. A representative list of these are listed in the directory. Radical UAE do carry a stock of parts for Radicals and these are offered to teams on a first-come first-served basis. Specialist parts are normally flown in from Europe, and by using internationally recognised courier firms, delivery is usually within 3 days of dispatch. The UAE is served by excellent sea and air connections. There are sea freight container services direct to the UAE from all major European ports with transit time from NW Europe being about 21 days. Singapore to the UAE takes approximately 10 days. Freight charges for a 40ft container with cars and spares, (ex: Felixtowe UK to Dubai) are approximately € 1700 each way. Air freight which is overnight from most major airports costs approximately € 3,000 for a Radical and € 7,000 for a Ferrari 458 or similar, plus spares. Return flights can be somewhat higher, so please check with your forwarder. Companies that can provide freight services to the UAE (which with the authors are familiar) are listed in the directory. Please note that these are budget figures which can vary. CUSTOMS & CLEARANCE Customs formalities in Dubai are relatively straightforward and can be handled by local agents (listed in the directory). A typical customs clearance is approximately € 200. There is a 5% temporary import duty applied to all imports. This is payable on entry and provided that the car is re-exported within 6 months, this sum is refundable. In order to reduce problems, it is advisable to use the same agent for import and export, as they will retain copies of all documentation. STORAGE SOLUTIONS There are multiple storage options available for race cars in the UAE. The simplest and most affordable is to store the cars and any equipment at the Dubai Autodrome circuit. The Autodrome offers 40 foot container units for rental within a secure area adjacent to the Race Paddock, which has 24 hour security patrols. The cost of the storage available at Dubai Autodrome starts from € 200 per month. Alternatively, there are several teams and workshops which also provide storage for race cars and which are listed in the directory. GETTING YOUR TEAM TO THE UAE AIR & VISAS The UAE has two major airports at Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These have excellent passenger connections with most major cities. Experience has shown that fares do vary widely and that sometimes routing by a Middle East carrier through their home airport can deliver lower cost fares. Prices do vary according to demand and early booking generally secures the best bargains. Typical cost from NW Europe to the UAE is € 400 although fares as low as € 300 can be obtained. For most Europeans, visas can be obtained on arrival. HOTELS & GETTING AROUND TRANSPORTING CARS BETWEEN CIRCUITS Dubai offers its visitors the widest range of hotels available anywhere in the world and prices do vary considerably. If coming purely to race, the budget hotels (still 3 star) offer twin bedded rooms from about € 80 per night, inclusive of taxes and service charges. For drivers and teams wishing to take the opportunity of combining a race weekend with business or a family holiday, there are a very wide range of options available ranging from the luxury end of the market to the resort hotel. Prices do vary considerably but a good quality family room in a resort hotel will cost from € 150 per night. The distance between Yas Marina and Dubai Autodrome is only 75 km. Whilst some teams do utilise race transporters, many utilise flatbed recovery transporters. These are relatively low cost (one way € 50) and the drivers are experienced in handling high value cars. For teams not utilising the services of a local race team or workshop, transport can be arranged through the local series coordinator. At Yas Marina Circuit there are 8 hotels situated at the track. Prices are similar to those of Dubai. AUH Motorsports have a discounted rate structure with Rotana hotels group and are able to offer their special rates to teams and drivers booking through them. Booking through AUH also entitles the person to a 15% discount on all food and beverage at the hotel. Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi are well served by taxis that are very reasonable in price when compared to other major cities. Dubai also has an excellent bus and metro service that can get people around the major city attractions quickly and efficiently. P20 GO RACING IN THE UAE! GO RACING IN THE UAE! P21 BECOME A RACE MARSHAL RACE MARSHAL FAQ’S To organise any Motorsport event requires a small army of volunteers, usually many more than the number of competitors. Without Marshals, motorsports cannot happen. Marshals carry out a wide range of duties, all of which contribute to the overall efficiency and success of the event.
