What is ETSU 1020?
ETSU 1020 is designed to help you build a foundation for success in college and in your life after
graduation. By gaining knowledge and skills essential for your success, you will be ready to meet
challenges you will face in your college career. The foundation for success you build here will also
prepare you to persist in achieving your hopes and goals for the future.
In this course you will
 Gain knowledge, attitudes and skills essential for your academic success in college
 Use resources that can help you succeed academically and personally at ETSU
 Connect with your fellow ETSU 1020 classmates and your course instructor
 Meet and build a working relationship with your academic advisor
 Learn how to clarify your career goals and identify academic majors that support those goals
 Learn more about diverse people and ideas
 Understand how you can be an active citizen of the ETSU community
Class materials and readings
 You will use the ETSU planner or another academic planner of your choosing.
 In ETSU’s D2L system (https://elearn.etsu.edu/) you will find an electronic copy of this syllabus,
course readings, assignments and quizzes, and digital drop boxes for submitting assignments.
Use your ETSU username and password (the same ones you use for GoldLink) to enter D2L.
 Assigned readings will be uploaded to D2L or handed out in class. Read all materials before
coming to class so you are prepared to share insights and ask questions about them.
Attendance and Participation
Regular class attendance is essential for academic success, and we will take attendance daily. A large
part of your grade in our course will be based on activities and quizzes done in class. If you must miss
class, please email your instructors as soon as you know you will be absent. It is your responsibility to
make up graded work. If you have to miss class for an approved university activity or another excused
reason (e.g., illness), you will be given make-up assignments for work you missed. You may be asked to
provide documentation of the reason for your absence, and it is your responsibility to arrange for make-up
work.
ETSU honor code and pledge
ETSU students “pledge to act with honesty, integrity, and civility in all matters.” Students found to be in
violation of policies on plagiarism, cheating or fabrication will be held accountable for their actions. Any
knowledge of academic misconduct should be reported.
