Keith Cunningham, NYPD, (Ret), proprietor of “The Bagel Shop” on Center St. in downtown Kingsport, will discuss his experiences as a captain on the NYPD combating terror threats in NYC. Tuesday, 10-Noon- Historical Perspectives A Second Gilded Age? America in 1890 and 2012: Dr. Andrew Slap, ETSU, Department of History • 10/9 – A look at how the ideology of capitalism developed in the Gilded Age and how society now compares to the late nineteenth century. • 10/16 – Urbanization and Class Conflict in the Gilded Age A look at immigration, urbanization and growing class conflict in America at the end of the nineteenth century. • 10/23 – Accommodation, Integration or Separation? A look at African Americans’ place in Gilded Age America and how prominent African American leaders responded. 10/30 – The Brooklyn Bridge - Mr. George Salaita, Adjunct Instructor, ETSU History Department, recently visited this famous landmark and will discuss its history and lore as well as explore a possible real estate investment. 11/6 – Road Trip: Bays Mountain Park for History and Planetarium Show 10:30 History of the mountain and the early homesteaders. Mr. Ken Childress, Director 11:30 Bring your own lunch. 12:30 Planetarium show The lecture and lunch will take place in Bays Mountain Park’s, Nature Center’s Discovery Theater in the lower level. At 12:30 p.m. meet in the planetarium to view a new program. There will be no fees. Tell the gatekeeper at the entrance gate that you are with the ETSU group. Tuesday, 1:30-3:30 10/9 – Cuba Today – D. Bruce Shine, Attorney, who recently visited Cuba, will discuss his impressions of the politics, economy and future of our Caribbean neighbor. 10/16 – Medieval Origins of Modern Democracy– Dr. Donald Leech, University of Virginia at Wise, History Department and a scholar of medieval English history, will help us understand how many of our ideas of a democratic form of government originated during the Middle Ages. 10/23 – The Effect of Aging on Hearing and Communication - Dr. Marc A. Fagelson, Director of Audiology, ETSU Department of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology – Dr. Fagelson says that hearing loss affects more than 50% of all people older than 55 years of age. His talk will review the hearing mechanism, provide explanations for the high prevalence of age-related hearing loss, and identify the consequences for affected individuals and their families. 10/30 – African Safari-The Big Five and Then Some – Mr. Richie Hayward, past president ACLJohnson City, will show and tell us of his recent trip to South Africa, where he went on a photo safari to encounter the Veldt's big five: Lions, Elephants, Leopards, Water Buffalo and Rhinoceroses. He will also feature a video of a cheetah kill. Richie will reveal his secrets of how some of these extraordinary pictures were captured. 11/6 – Road Trip to Bays Mountain, continued (see details above). 11/13 – England, Revisited – Mr. Bob Burpitt, an intrepid traveler will tell of his journeys to England using his excellent photographic skills to highlight his meanderings. Wednesday, 10-Noon 10/10 – Awaken Your Muse with a Poet Extraordinaire - Ms Rita Quillen, Mountain Empire Community College, Department of English and a poet with a national reputation absolutely guarantees that students will have written a poem before her class ends or they can’t go to lunch. (Poetic license?) 10/24 – Road Trip: ETSU/Eastman Valleybrook Campus near Gray TN This is a joint meeting of the Alliance for Continued Learning-Johnson City and KACL. Convene at 10:15 in the reception area of the Valleybrook campus. • • • 10:30 - Dr. Brian Noland, President, will offer his views of the present and the future for financing a college education. Noon-1:30 p.m. – Catered lunch on site (No charge) 1:30-2:30 – Ms Trish Branham, Director, will lead a tour of the ETSU/Valleybrook facilities including research laboratories. Directions from Kingsport– Travel East on Interstate 26 to Exit 10 – Eastern Star Road Turn right at the end of the ramp onto Eastern Star Road. Travel 7/10 mile and turn right on Winchester Drive (You will see a power line tower on your left just before the turn). Stay on Winchester 4/10 mile to a four-way stop. You will see Valleybrook’s gate straight ahead. Stay to your left and you will see main entrance and retreat center. You will be greeted and directed by Meghan Eslinger, Valleybrook Receptionist. 10/31 – Innovation at Eastman – Ms Cathy Dodd, Director, Downstream Engagement & Design, will present a show-and-tell of some of the latest product introductions, such as Tritan™ copolyester and Perennial™ Wood. Wednesday, 1:30-3:30 10/10 – New York Dada: The Alfred Stieglitz Circle – Dr. Christal Hensley, Head, Department of Art, Northeast State Community College, says that during World War I, many European artists came to New York City to seek refuge. They were supported and encouraged by American photographer Alfred Stieglitz. As a result, New York Dada was born. This lecture will explore both the visual and literary arts of New York Dada. Topics discussed include Stieglitz's 291 Gallery and quarterly Camera Work, the Little Magazine 291, and the infamous "R. Mutt Case" (aka "The Buddha of the Bathroom"). 10/17 – Whitelaw Digs Mongolia – Dr. Mick Whitelaw, Gray Fossil Site Geologist and a native of Australia, will discuss his experiences and research while studying the creative process and distribution of petroglyphs on glacial pavement surfaces in far western Mongolia. 10/24 – Road Trip: ETSU/Eastman Valleybrook Campus near Gray TN (See details above.) Thursday, 10-Noon 10/11 – Origins of the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution – Mr. Bob Arrington, Attorney and Kingsport Times-News columnist will provide answers to the question: From where did the ideas of the Founders come? Classical Rome? Ancient Athens? Or was it good old AngloSaxon tradition? 10/18, 10/25, 11/1 – U.S. History: America Struggles Toward Nationhood - Mr. David Haga Adjunct Instructor, ETSU Department of History, will lead the exploration of America’s th development during the early 19 century as a republic, aided by DVD-based lectures of The nd History of the U.S., 2 Edition, by various professors from The Great Courses of The Teaching Company. Some of the topics to be covered are • Fear of Alien Conquest • The Agrarian Republic • The “American System” • U.S. Enters the World 11/8, 11/15 – Medical Myths, Lies and Half -Truths –Drawing on the expertise of Steven Novella, M.D. a neurologist and a fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, Dr. George O’Neill will use DVD-based lectures of The Teaching Company to facilitate skeptical inquiry into • Water and hydration • Vitamin and nutrition • Dieting • Natural is always better • Friendly bacteria Thursday, 1:30-3:30 10/11 – Earthquake and Tsunami Warnings – Dr. Chris Gregg, ETSU Department of Geosciences, will discuss the systems being used and those on the drawing board to establish reliable warnings of pending earthquakes and tsunamis. 10/18, 10/25, 11/1 – Hubble Telescope Images of the Universe – Drawing on the expertise of David Meyer, Astronomy Professor, Northwestern University, Dr. George O’Neill will use DVDbased lectures from The Teaching Company to facilitate the discussion of the • Formation of stars, • Collisions of galaxies • The accelerating expansion of the universe.
