Project: North Center Can Crusher
The Can Crusher was initially a DTC project from 2004, revisited this past summer
by the Segal Interns. The mechanics of
the cancrusher remain the same; however,
updates have been made to the motor, buttons, fixtures, and overall aesthetics. Multiple safety hazards were also addressed in
order to protect users from injuring themselves. The Can Crusher will be used at
the North Center in Chicago, IL in order
to teach clients about sequencing and to
crush cans, which helps them raise money
for special events.
Project: The Vitruvian
Three percent of living liver transplant donors are diagnosed with brachial plexus
injury postoperatively. In order to determine
whether the angle of abduction of the arm
plays a major role in damaging this nerve,
the Vitruvian has been created in order to
monitor the angle of abduction. Placed over
the shoulder, the device arm moves a potentiometer as the arm abducts, sending
signals to an external device via Bluetooth.
The team is currently producing their second version, which includes updated positioning, better adhesives for attaching the
device to the body, and data storage.
Project: North Center Adaptive
Microwave Faceplate
Previously addressed by a DTC team, this
project gives North Center clients the ability
to warm up their lunches on their own. Due
to extended use, the past solution broke
and the design was improved this summer
by the Segal Interns. The new solution, a
faceplate that attaches to a standard commercial dial microwave, allows for clients to
turn the dial to several displayed food options. This presents an easy, recognizable
way for clients to make the right choices to
heat their lunches.
