Multi-physics of Active Systems and Structures (MASS)
NSF REU Summer Program
The program is accepting applications for summer 2013. Download APPLICATION INFORMATION
here.
Program Overview
The REU program goal is to provide undergraduate students in mechanical engineering and related fields an opportunity to
participate in ongoing active research programs, including the development of micro air vehicles, multi-modal robots, active
flow control, aeroacoustics, sensors and actuators, smart materials, energy harvesting and storage, etc.. The multidisciplinary
nature of these projects will engage students in cross-cutting technologies by inspiring the integration and synthesis of ideas
and facilitating a better understanding of engineering design at the system level.
The proposed program will recruit undergraduate students in engineering for an educational enhancement program that will
involve them directly in advanced research activities within the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (CoE), Tallahassee,
Florida. The unified theme of MASS will mesh well with our signature research endeavors such as the recently established
Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP) and the newly established Aero-propulsion,
Mechatronics and Energy (AME) Research Center, which will provide an excellent setting for this program. The
strategic alignment of this REU site with our burgeoning research programs and a state of the art facility will provide an
abundance of intellectual/human resources as well as the research and administrative infrastructure needed to carry out the
mission of effectively integrating education and research. The overarching goal of the project is to motivate more US students
to pursue advanced engineering degrees or enter research-oriented careers. We will establish a strong and lasting
relationship with neighboring educational communities to ensure an effective pipeline to recruit more qualified US students,
especially under-represented minorities, into graduate programs.
Application
The program is designed for students who have completed their sophomore or junior year in engineering (any specialty) or
related fields. Women, underrepresented minorities, and students from colleges and universities without significant research
opportunities are encouraged to apply. Applicants are expected to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must be citizens or
permanent residents of the US. We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2013. Applications are due February
15, 2013. Prospective students should download and complete the REU-MASS Application. Applicants must also provide a
resume, a personal statement (500 max), two letters of recommendation and a copy of their official transcripts. External
candidates will receive additonal housing accommodation, meal plan allowance and travel subsidy and the overall package by
including 10 week stipends will exceed $7,000.
All application materials should be mailed to:
