C. Giancoli. Overview and Rules The aim of this course is to introduce you to some fundamental problems in physics. We will discuss motion, energy, the concept of energy and momentum, gravitation, optics, etc and their impact on our daily life and the way one sees the Universe. 1. Chapters to be covered: 1-9 and 23 of the text book. Some section may be omitted. Extra text material and/or references might be presented when necessary. 2. Class Grading 1. 2. 3. 4. If, for any well justified reason, you miss the midterm exam, the final exam will account for 60% of your grade. iii. An equation sheet and a list with fundamental constants will be provided for the exams. No other aids will be allowed such as calculators, electronic translators, cell phones, ipods, etc, without permission. 3. Assignments: Assignments have to be handed in at the beginning of the class on the due date indicated on the class website. Late assignments will be tolerated if handed in at the beginning of the next class following the original due date with a cumulative 10% a day penalty to the assignment. 4. Solutions of problems have to be given in full and written clearly, showing all your work and detailing your calculations in an organized way. Ineligible solutions will not be considered. 5. Tutorials: A Tutorial session will be offered until the end of the semester. Date and time tol be announced in class. 7. The Faculty of Science is happy to offer Supplementary Instruction for Physics 109. Supplemental instruction (SI) offers out-of-class study groups to help students succeed in this class. There will be three one-hour weekly sessions and students may choose to go to one, two, or all three sessions. Students who regularly attend SI will save time studying, better master the course content, and likely earn a better grade.
