 West Suburban Reading Council’s
Summer Read and Feed Project
Greetings,
As you know from the earlier newsflash, West Suburban Reading council was
selected to participate in the Read and Feed Project in conjunction with the
International Literacy Association (formerly IRA) and the National Title One
Association.
Read and Feed is a summer project that will provide literacy activities for
students in low- income families. Having met the requirements for this project,
Maywood District 89 was selected for this project. It is at this point that we need
your assistance to make this project a success. We are looking for third grade
activities that students can take home and do over the summer. These
activities should be nonfiction/comprehension based.
These third grade literacy activities should:1) be easy to use with minimum
parental help; 2) be ready for duplication; 3) should contain explicit directions
for the student and parent; 4) provide the answers where needed; 5) be
submitted as a PDF file or Word document, if done electronically; 6) copy ready
if submitted by snail mail.
Here are some suggested activities. However, feel free to send other third
grade literacy activities that focus on nonfiction/comprehension.
Games
*Trail Game: Attached are some samples of a template to make a trail
game. The game must fit onto one 81/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Include
complete directions, cards if needed, and suggestions for markers.
Attached is also District 89’s third grade Academic and PARCC
vocabularies for possible use.
There are other blank trail game templates on Google. Google blank trail
games. Remember the trail game must fit on an 81/2 x 11 page. Feel free
to use a template you may already have.
*Concentration Game: Make two sets of flashcards* one set of cards
contains the Academic, PARCC, or other third grade vocabulary and the
other set has the definitions. Provide directions on how to lay out the
cards and play the game. (See below for websites for making flashcards.)
Vocabulary
Here are some suggested vocabulary activities: matching, word search,
scrambled letters, crossword puzzles, four square, and flashcards. Please
provide directions and answers where needed. Feel free to send other
vocabulary activities. The vocabulary words can be the attached
Academic and PARCC vocabularies and/or other third grade words.
If you do not already have a website(s) to make some of the above
activities, here are two helpful websites: Lakeshore’s free website
www.lakeshorelearning.com and www.toolsforeducators.com also a free
site.
Reader’s Theatre
Nonfiction reader’s theatre scripts are preferred. These scripts may be
ones you have found and used or ones that you have created or
adapted from other sources, such as a social studies unit or a language
arts story. When sending the script please include the source and keep in
mind the reading level of these summer school students.
Journal Writing Ideas
During summer school the students will be doing journal writing. What are
some topics you have used? Send them to us!
Once all the activities have arrived, they will be placed in a binder and
given to District 89’s literacy coordinator who will be responsible for the
duplication.
These activities need to be received by May 15, 2015. These can be sent electronically or snail mail to: Barbara Ashton 1770 Hemlock Drive Glendale Heights, Illinois 60139 bashton1515@sbcglobal.net Please provide: * Your Name *School name *School address *Phone *Email address ( not blocked by filters ) *This information is needed in case there are questions about the activity(s).
