Application Instructions
DEADLINE: Monday, February 16, 2015 by 12 p.m.

I. PREPARE THE FOLLOWING APPLICATION MATERIALS:
1. Completed application form with student and faculty advisor signatures
2. Coauthored one- to two-page research project proposal
• This should be a clear, concise description of the proposed research project. Explain what is to be done,
where the research will be carried out, what the final product will be, and the role of each participant.
Include background on the topic, your proposed methodology, and the significance of the project.
Indicate how the project relates to any ongoing research program (e.g., a dissertation, distinguished majors
program thesis). You are encouraged to use the following headings:
o Background and Research Question
o Methodology
o Potential Outcomes and Implications (please address any research limitations in this section)
• Single-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 point font.
• Please include references/bibliography on a separate sheet (no more than ½ page in length).
3. For each student, a list of relevant course work and experience and a CV or resume that includes honors,
awards, fellowships, or research grants you have received.
4. For each student, an unofficial transcript.
5. For international research, a printout of your completed International Projects Travel Form. Students
proposing to travel internationally as part of their proposed research must register with the International
Studies Office, complete the International Projects Travel Form, submit the form by email to the International
Studies Office by February 16, 2015, and save a copy of the form to submit with your Double Hoo
application. Please do not leave this to the last minute; it is an important part of your application. To access

II. SAVE YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS AS ONE ADOBE PDF AND UPLOAD TO THE DOUBLE
HOO COLLAB SITE (Adobe Pro software for combining files is available in the Scholars Lab).
a. Name your file in this format: “LastnameFirstname.pdf”
b. Go to the uvacollab site (https://collab.itc.virginia.edu/portal) and log in with your uva computing id and
password. From my workspace on the menu, select membership. Select joinable sites and search for
“Double Hoo Application” using the search field on the top right of the screen. Select “Double
Application” and join the site.
c. From your top menu bar of collab sites select the "Double Hoo Application" site (you may have to refresh
your browser for it to appear). On the Double Hoo Application collab site, select the “application” tab
from the left navigation.
d. Complete and then submit the application.
In addition, please arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the Center for Undergraduate
Excellence, P.O. Box 400874, 305 Harrison Institute OR emailed to Brian Cullaty at brc7q@virginia.edu.
• One letter must be from the professor who will serve as faculty advisor. This letter should indicate that the
advisor approves of and will provide ongoing guidance for the proposed undergraduate-graduate research
project. It should also address the graduate student’s experience and/or potential for mentoring and the
appropriateness of the project as an undergraduate-graduate endeavor.
• One letter for each applicant. This may be from a professor, teaching assistant, or other person who can
address the applicant’s preparation and potential for carrying out the research project.
