NEWS RELEASE January 25, 2008 Mariemont City Schools Mariemont Schools Present A Living History of Ohio’s Heroes Children’s author Rick Sowash created a living time line with the help of fourth grade students from across the Mariemont City Schools district. The students from Fairfax Elementary, Mariemont Elementary and Terrace Park Elementary each portrayed an Ohio hero spanning from the time of Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman to current day with Dr. Henry Heimlich. From Indian chief Tecumseh to Civil War nurse Mary Ann Bickerdyke to astronaut Neil Armstrong, these Ohioans all demonstrated courage and caring in their day. Sowash’s program is adapted from his book Heroes of Ohio: 23 True Tales of Courage and Character and has the student participants bring to life each hero to the delight of their attentive third and fourth grade audience. Studying Ohio history is an integral part of the district’s fourth grade curriculum, making this particular program a perfect fit. The assembly was part of the district’s visiting author program, an ongoing joint effort of Mariemont City Schools and its parent/teacher groups.
