Mode of Action
Biovert™ mimics a naturally occurring antimicrobial-antioxidant protection
system. When the two-part system is combined, a cascade of linked
reactions takes place to generate antimicrobial products in situ. The
cascade is initiated by the action of the glucose oxidase enzyme in the
presence of its substrate (glucose) and oxygen. This generates H2O2,
which is used by the lactoperoxidase to catalyze the oxidation of I- and SCNanions, forming hypoiodite and hypothiocyanate which have antimicrobial
activity. The result is rapid microbial cell death expression.
Formulation Recommendations
–– Prepare base formula with all ingredients but
Biovert™ Enzyme & Substrate
–– Adjust pH to 4 - 6; Cool <40°C
–– Add Substrate to give 1.0% final concentration
–– Add Enzyme to give 0.05% final concentration
–– Mix thoroughly to ensure complete blending
–– IMPORTANT – add substrate and enzyme separately to formula

Temperature Information
Efficacy - CTFA Challenge Test
Microbiology Challenge Study
–– Processing temperatures should be <40°C
–– Emulsion containing Biovert™ System – stability shown†:
–– 40°C – more than 2 months
–– 37°C – 3 months
–– 35°C – 6 months
–– 25°C – more than 2 years
–– Every formula needs to be challenge tested under the user’s
stability protocols
It is well established that Biovert™ has broad spectrum antimicrobial effects in a wide range of formulation types. Data from recent evaluations
demonstrating performance of Biovert™ in a water in oil emulsion containing silicone is shown below. A CTFA challenge protocol was followed.
All samples were diluted in neutralizer and plated quantitatively for viable organisms after 28 days. After 28 days, all samples were subjected
to a second challenge.
The results show that the formulation containing Biovert™ was able to
withstand repeated microbial challenges [bacteria, yeast and mold]
while the unpreserved controls were susceptible to contamination.
