Biology 12
B8.6 Apply knowledge of proteins to explain the effects on enzyme activity of pH,
temperature, substrate concentration, enzyme concentration, competitive inhibitors,
and heavy metals.
Inquiry into Life, 10th ed.
pp. 108 – 109, 113
Review “Factors Affecting Enzymatic Speed” on pages 108 and 109, and then try
“Testing Yourself” questions 13, 14, 15, 18, 21, and 22.
Inquiry into Life, 7th ed.
pp. 78 – 79
Review “What Affects Enzyme Productivity” on pages 78 and 79.
Student Study Guide: Inquiry into Life, 7th ed.
pp. 37 – 39
Attempt questions 21 to 27, 39 to 42, 45, and 46 on pages 37 to 39. Please feel free to
discuss any of these problems with your instructor, as it is important you have a good
grasp of this topic.
Enzymes Laboratory
Investigations in Biology, 2nd ed.
pp. 90 – 92
This is a lab assignment. Obtain a copy of Investigation 34 on pages 90 to 92. Arrange a
convenient time to complete the lab in the near future. You do not have to do the
questions at the end but you should write a conclusion which fully answers question 1.
That is, explain the reason for the observations in each of the test tubes.
Hand in your completed lab report to your instructor for marking. (If you need guidance
on how to write a formal lab report, please click here.)
Summary
Obtain copies of “Affect of Heavy Metals on Enzyme Activity.” You should be able to
explain the effects of each of the following on enzyme activity:
heavy metals
enzyme concentration
substrate concentration
temperature
pH
competitive inhibitors
