7ILAI Summer Reading It is extremely important to read over the summer because it helps retain and develop your vocabulary and reading level. Part of your summer reading is Roswell High: The Outsider. This sheet is full of activities to do before, while and after reading the novel. All of the activities are completed in the correct order in the white journal that accompanies your book. If you lose the book and/or the journal, you will be charged replacement fees. Reading the book and journal activities are due August 29, 2008. We will take the AR test on August 29, 2008. So, you need to preview this sheet. Then complete the entries that need to be done before reading the novel. Then read Roswell High: The Outsider. Once you are finished reading, complete the pages as required. It is up to you to pay attention, follow directions and complete the journal activities correctly. READING JOURNAL ACTIVITIES: 1. FIRST PAGE: The first page of the journal is unlined — • Tape or glue a photograph of yourself. (The photograph needs to be school appropriate.) Under your picture, you need to develop 2 goals you want to accomplish in THIS CLASS. Then you need to write 2 more goals that you would like to complete that do not have anything to do with this class. Write the goals in complete sentences. 2. SECOND PAGE: This is the first-lined page in the journal— • List five different activities you enjoy doing in complete sentences. Then draw a picture of your favorite activity on the backside of the page where there are no lines. Write a sentence as the caption for the page. 3. THIRD PAGE: On second-lined page of the journal — • Write this prompt on the top of the page: Do you think supernatural beings like aliens really exist? Explain why or why not. You should use the entire page to explain your thoughts and feelings in complete sentences. Draw a picture of what you think an alien would look like on the back of the page. 4. FOURTH PAGE: On the third-lined page of the journal — • Keep track of the pages you read of Roswell High: The Outsider. Label the top of the page with the following headings and columns: pages Date Number of pages read Amount of time spent reading 5. FIFTH PAGE: On the fourth-lined page of the journal — • Title the page with your favorite character. Write a poem that describes and tells why he or she is your favorite character in around 10 –15 lines. On the backside of the lined page, draw the character as you imagine him or her to look like. 6. SIXTH PAGE: On the fifth-lined page of the journal — • Title the page with your least favorite character. Write a poem that describes and tells why he or she is your least favorite character in around 10 –15 lines. 7ILAI Summer Reading 7. SEVENTH-TENTH PAGES: On the sixth – ninth-lined pages of the journal — • Summarize chapters 1& 2, 5&6, 9&10, 13&14. Label each chapter and write a paragraph underneath the heading. You may need to write on the back of each page to finish the summaries. Each summary should be around 2-4 sentences and include all of the important information from the chapter. Some summaries will be longer than others. Chapter 1 Then start writing here. Chapter 2 Then start writing here. 8. ELEVENTH PAGE: On the tenth-lined page of the journal — • Write: My favorite chapter is _______________________ (and name the chapter on the line). Quickly describe what is happening and tell why it is your favorite chapter. 9. TWELFTH PAGE: On the eleventh-lined page of the journal — • Write: Text to Self at the top of the page. Pick some aspect of the book: lying to someone, keeping an important secret, meeting an alien, UFO sighting. Write this aspect down in 1 to 2 complete sentences — reference where you found the information in the text. (On page 38 Liz is wrestling with the idea of telling Max’s secret. In the end, she does tell her best friend Maria.) Then make a connection between what you are reading and yourself. Do you have any personal experiences that you can relate to the aspect of the text you picked? Explain the personal experience or details and explain how they are connected or relate to each other. 10. 11. • • THIRTEENTH PAGE: On the twelfth-lined page of the journal— Write: Text to World/Text at the top of the page. Pick some aspect of the book: lying to someone, keeping an important secret, meeting an alien, UFO sighting — it needs to be different than above. Write this aspect down in 1 to 2 complete sentences — reference where you found the information in the text. Then make a connection between what you are reading from the novel to something you have read/heard/seen on television, radio, movies, other books, newspapers, textbooks, etc. Tell the source you found the information and explain the connection between the novel and your other source. FOURTEENTH PAGE: On the thirteenth-lined page of the journal — Keep a journal log of every book you read over the summer. Write the date you started and finished the book, the author, title of the book and whether you took an AR test or not. Date 12. • Author Title of the book AR Test Y/N INSIDE BACK COVER: Tape or glue an article you have found about the supernatural, UFO sighting or possible alien sighting that you found interesting. It needs to come from a reputable source— n ot the National Enquirer etc, but from a newspaper or magazine/journal. Write a summary about the article. 7ILAI Summer Reading 13. FINAL ACTIVITY: Decorate the cover of your journal however you please, but make sure your cover reflects you as a person. Your name has to be somewhere on the front and stand out so I know it is yours.
